Description
When David Bowie announced at the Hammersmith Odeon on 3rd July 1973 that he (or, as it subsequently turned out, alter-ego Ziggy Stardust) was breaking up the band, manager Tony Defries glimpsed a golden opportunity rather than the end of an era. With the MainMan agency’s main man coming off the road for at least a while, there was, Defries reasoned, space in the rock star firmament for a new Bowie, particularly one who would also be under MainMan’s management…

Thus it was that Bowie’s faithful right-hand man, Mick Ronson, was thrust into the spotlight. Possibly the most reluctant solo performer ever, Ronno was given three weeks to write and record a debut solo album. With Bowie’s help (he contributed three songs to the set), “Slaughter On 10th Avenue” was quickly pieced together after the conclusion of the “Pin Ups” sessions. Despite its rushed nature it was a strong effort, and the LP reached the UK album charts Top Ten.

Buoyed by this success, Ronson then recorded a second album, “Play Don’t Worry” – although before it could appear, he’d accepted Ian Hunter’s invitation to join Mott The Hoople. As a result, Mick’s sophomore solo set was largely overlooked, and his lukewarm attempts to promote it were further scuppered by his and Ian Hunter’s decision to leave Mott and relocate to America.

Sadly “Slaughter On 10th Avenue” and “Play Don’t Worry” would be the only solo albums released during Mick’s lifetime: after his departure from MainMan in mid-1976, he largely preferred to work in a group context rather than as a solo performer.

Nevertheless, he did continue to record sporadically as a solo act. A 4-CD set, Only After Dark chronicles his peripatetic solo work during the rest of the seventies after his split with Bowie, with those two official albums joined by B-sides, alternative versions, outtakes and a plethora of unissued-at-the-time studio recordings (including a handful with Guam, the backing band for Bob Dylan’s legendary 1975 Rolling Thunder tour) and various highlights from his live shows. Featuring some rare photos and a lengthy new essay on his Seventies career, Only After Dark is the most comprehensive anthology to date of a major talent.

I think there's a lot I don't have here. Never had good luck with Cherry Red Sound quality.

I'm in the same boat. Very interested in the material, but Cherry Red is not a favorite label.

I'm surprised at you guys. Cherry Red and their imprints (including the incredible Grapefruit and Esoteric) are among my favourite reissue labels and I have a boatload of their releases in my collection.

Agreed. The recent Tony Banks (Esoteric) box set viewtopic.php?f=17&t=109770 is fantastic.

I wholeheartedly second that statement. Esoteric is the new "Rhino" and the Grapefruit label has offered some of the best comps out there.

I don't have a lot of their stuff, but I have not been impressed with what I have. The sound seems to be derived from 2nd generation tapes to me- they lack something to my ears. Having said that, over the weekend I was eyeing their Manticore reissues- in particular, their Pete Sinfield and PFM titles. So I'm not totally disqualifying them. Just not overly impressed with what I have so far.

I love Esoteric for their re-mastered sound quality. Grapefruit does use some demo's, alts in as such for their comps and it does create a very entertaining thoughtful package(s).

The only sub-label of Cherry Red that is very inconsistent to me is their "Lemon" affiliate. They at times live up to their name.

in no way is this post meant to demean or put down mick ronson, loved him in the spiders from mars and 'heaven and hull' is sublime.

but i can't figure something out and maybe you all here can help me.

mick ronson gets a box set, as does gentle giant, king crimson, nektar, camel and on and on with 'fringe" (as i call them) bands that were never ever considered mainstream in any way and have box sets, not 1 or 2 CD comps of best of's or greatest hits, 4, 5, 6 Cd box sets!

yet there are still, to this day (and linda and i have talked about this) quite a few 60's and 70's bands with legit hit singles and hit albums that do not have a decent compilation ( 1 or 2 CD's ) of their work. i say this because i know that nektar, mick ronson and the others can't possibly sell a whole hell of a lot copies of these expensive sets. sure the people here at imwan will buy them, but we are very very far from the norm. i'd bet the nest egg that if you stopped 10 people on the street and asked them who mick ronson or gentle giant is not one of them would know.

so my question is.........................why does this happen?

where are 10 - 15 song compilations for the hombres, the woolies, the balloon farm and so many others........i would think they could sell a lot more of those at $10 - $12 than a $50 - $75 box set.

thanks for reading and looking forward to your ideas

Possibly because Ronson was really big in England & that's where Cherry Red is located. Probably inexpensive licensing.

Sound wise, what immediately comes to mind is awful sound on 2 different Bow Wow Wow set, a 2 cd set & a box. I know these were reasonably well recorded; I used to have much of the material on Japanese vinyl. I don't remember having the issues with the Esoteric imprint that I've had with Cherry Red even if they do have the same owners.

I'm really tired, so I may be off a track or 2 (as they changed some of the running order), but it appears if you have these 4 cd's, there's aprox 4 new tracks here:

1. Slaughter On 10th Avenue 11 track version 1997 Snapper 636551550321
2. Play Don't Worry 18 track version Snapper 1997 636551550420
3. Just Like This 12 track disc 1; + disc 2 with no track listing (this may reduce the 4; discogs has the track listing for cd #2, but I am too tired to go through it all again) Burning Airlines 1999 5018766990379
4. Showtime 12 track live set + 2nd disc with interview & 5 more live tracks Burning Airlines 503889400337

I haven't compared the original cd's (I have all titles on factory pressed cd) for sound yet, but it looks like this is for hard core fans, who probably like me have the 4 mentioned titles. If you're a new Ronson fan who wants to be a completest, it sounds like you're the target audience here.
