For over 50 years, singer-songwriter and musician IAIN MATTHEWS has carved his own niche, fusing his own mix of well-crafted songs drawing on folk-rock, Americana, soft rock and other influences.

ORPHANS AND OUTCASTS reviews three volumes of his long-deleted rarities series, adding a newly-curated fourth CD of previously unissued rarities from more recent times, bringing the project right up-to-date.

The box set covers Iain’s entire career, from mid-60s rarities with Pyramid and recordings from around the time of his breakthrough with Matthews Southern Comfort to a handful of rarities by folk-rock favourites Plainsong and a plethora of solo material.

Compiled and annotated by Iain himself, ORPHANS AND OUTCASTS is a very personal trawl through the back pages of a remarkable musical biography.

Discs 1-3 have now been remastered; and everything on Disc 4 is previously unissued.

ORPHANS AND OUTCASTS also boasts a multitude of impressive musicians who have worked with Iain down the years, including Richard Thompson, Andy Roberts, Viv Stanshall, Mark ‘Griff’ Griffiths, Pat Donaldson, Gerry Conway, Ian Whiteman, Jerry Donahue, Timmi Donald, David Surkamp, Mark Hallman and many others.

Introductory essay by renowned rock biographer and historian Clinton Heylin.

I have all of the Orphans releases and highly recommend this new set to anyone who enjoys his material. The fourth disc makes this tempting.

The original box is 5 discs (I own it). The original box is also quite good.

It will be hard to justify paying the price of 4 cd's for the one I don't have. This is actually the 2nd time I.M
has done this with the same material. He self released 4 of the 5 as individual cd's (which I bought), &
than released the box with a 5th (which I also bought). Thank goodness in those days anyway for ebay
& fans who didn't know about the 5 cd box.

Do you have a link for this box? I can't find it anywhere, I know it is OOP but am interested in seeing the details.

I believe it was self released. I know the original 4 separate cd's were self released.

Edit: I read further down the discogs page. They claim their were only 50 of these released! If true, it would explain why it's hard to find........

I have that Notebook Series 5 CD box, it is not the same as the Orphans and Outcasts series. They are "two different animals", compare your set's track list with post one.

My memory sucks. I just took a look at my collection (rather than depending on Excel). I still have 1 & 3. Not sure why I sold 2. Barry, do you know if 2 was released as part of something else? I can't say I'm catalog on Iain (too much import only stuff), but I try to stay close. Been a fan since I was a teen.
