Description
Songs For Judy is the debut release on Shakey Pictures Records, Young's own imprint distributed by Reprise Records. Songs For Judy is thoroughly engaging collection of live acoustic performances culled from Neil's November 1976 solo tour and features twenty-two songs recorded at various cities along the tour. This song cycle of live recordings is particularly powerful and unique. Young had spent much of the year traveling around the world on tour with Crazy Horse. When touring on his own, he recharged and focused on songs that would not surface in recorded form for several years. Of the albums many treasures, "No One Seems To Know" would not see the light of day until now and it remains unreleased in any other iteration.

The raw versions of the tracks found on Songs For Judy reflect an artist completely unvarnished and unafraid to allow the songs to breath and to find their own shape when performed in a solo setting. Songs written in that era would come into focus and then seemingly disappear only to re-enter Young's orbit somewhere down the road. "White Line" and "Give Me Strength" are such examples of finding the light in 1990 and 2017 respectively. It's also fascinating to hear Young revisit early gems such as Springfield's "Mr. Soul" ('67), "Here We Are In The Years" ('68), and "The Losing End" ('69) from some of his earliest solo recordings which remain as timeless as ever.

From Uncut:

A new post on Neil Young’s website, Neil Young Archives, suggests that his next release will be Songs For Judy – a double LP of tracks recorded live on his 1976 solo tour.

The post by Young’s long-time producer John Hanlon alludes to the mastering of a double LP called Songs For Judy, which is described as “a collection of 23 songs that had been recorded during Neil’s solo tour in November of 1976. Most of these songs came originally from Joel Bernstein’s audio cassette recordings in the hall as Neil performed with just an acoustic guitar, piano or banjo. Occasionally a 12-string guitar or Stringman synthesizer would make an appearance.”

No release date is given but Hanlon’s blog post suggests that the mastering process is complete and the record is ready to be pressed.

As with any live Neil, I'm in for this as well despite the fact that I have sound concerns here. Recorded on cassette does not inspire confidence here, unless I'm misunderstanding what we'll be getting here.

Keep this one fact in mind , the divorce and Pono cost Neil a lot of money . He has a real good incentive to keep releasing the archives as quickly as possible . It would be great to hear the Joel Bernstein tape frpm the master tapes ! from the master

Maybe the Rolling Stones should invest in Pono 2.0.

i question whether it's really about money for one reason and one reason only:

all neil young has to do is pick up the phone and call crosby, stills & nash and set up a "final 'world tour' (say 50 - 75 dates over the course of a year) and he can make all the money he will ever need for the rest of what life he has left.

and i am pretty sure that david, stephen and graham will put all their little quarrels behind them and go along for the ride.

I agree. If that was the case, I think we'd start seeing things indicating a fire sale. The Archives releases have been oddly inconsistent. We got Hitchhiker last year and Roxy earlier this year and a promise from Neil that, as soon as his current tour with Promise of the Real is over, he's going to get right to work on finishing Archives Vol. 2. Where have we heard that before? I'm sure his divorce cost him some serious change and Pono was an abject failure but something tells me he's doing alright financially. Neil just seems to release stuff when the mood strikes him and it doesn't bore him too quickly.

I want to see a track list. A 1976 solo cassette with Banjo may or may not be of interest.

Amazon now shows the CD as one disc with all 23 tracks, so I've removed "double" from our thread's title. It will be a 2LP double album in its vinyl configuration, though:

CD

Vinyl
Dec 14, 2018

I wonder if any of these recordings are the same as those that appeared on the Neil Young radio show released earlier this year, "Acoustic Tour 1976: The Classic Unplugged Broadcast"

viewtopic.php?f=43&t=104604

The tracklists are somewhat similar, though not presented in the same order

(hennemusic) Neil Young will release an archival acoustic live album, "Songs For Judy", on November 30. "Songs For Judy" will be initially be available via CD and digital, with a vinyl edition to follow on December 14.

The project features a collection of performances from various stops on Young's November 1976 tour, presenting a mix of classic tracks alongside new material and the debut release of the rarity "No One Seems To Know" (see track list below).

"The shows were reckless and beautiful," says curator Cameron Crowe, who was on the road with the Canadian rocker at the time. "The evenings began with an hour-long acoustic solo set from Neil. The acoustic portion of the evening morphed nightly, often fueled by a smoke or two just behind the curtain. After a break, Neil and Crazy Horse would return for a barn-burner of an electric set designed to level the place. They succeeded nightly."

Tour photographer Joel Bernstein recorded the shows on cassette tape with the original intention of creating his own archives of the trek. "I immediately realized that making these tapes was in fact a great idea," Bernstein explains. "I was soon raiding malls for whatever blank C-90 cassettes I could find along the way. The U.S. leg of this tour was brief, but the performances were at their best intense and thrilling. As the tour continued, the cache of cassette-tape grew, all of them filled with gems."

Crowe and Bernstein were tasked with sorting through the material to create a final track list for the "Songs For Judy" package. "For days we listened and compiled," recalls Crowe. "It was deliriously painstaking work. Wake up, eat breakfast, dive back into the recordings. Decide which of the 12 versions of 'Old Laughing Lady' was most essential. Repeat."
