I took a Shakespeare course in ninth grade and Macbeth was on the menu. Our teacher thought it a good idea to field trip to see this movie playing at a retro house. The nudity and unbelievable gore in this traumatized everyone on the bus, including the teacher who had no idea. A truly brilliant movie, and far and away my favorite treatment of any of the Bard's works (the Patrick Stewart version is great too).
Brilliant opening sets the entire mood:
And lo and behold, a year later Robert Graves' I Claudius was being read, and the same teacher thought Caligula (out at the time) would be ideal as the movie was somewhat based on this book. Didn't happen, and she was wise enough to preview this time. Tho we did see the BBC I Claudius (with John Hurt) which is fantastic.

I bought this LP back in the 70's as a new import because I saw that there was a VCS 3 in the credits (I'd buy nearly any album with synthesizers back then, especially VCS 3, which was a cool suitcase synth used by Pink Floyd and Gong, among others; I got to play one in an electronic music class in the 70's); Turned out to be a pretty good album, though I sold the LP a few years ago. Thought the film was good at the time, but don't remember much about it now except that intro.
