Description
Who Came First is the debut album by Pete Townshend, released in 1972. It includes demos from the abandoned concept album Lifehouse, part of which became Who's Next. The original release had a gatefold cover and included a poster with additional photos of Meher Baba from the Louis van Gasteren film Beyond Words.

The cover photo of Townshend standing on eggs is a reference to the eternal question: 'Who came first? The chicken or the egg.' It peaked at number 30 on the UK album chart and at number 69 on the US Billboard 200.

We celebrate the 45th Anniversary with a 2CD expanded version of the album, housed in 8 panel Digi DVD packaging, the original poster from the 1972 release and 24 page booklet which contains rare images of Meher Baba and Pete in his recording studio. Also included are new sleeve notes provided by Pete himself.

Remastering has been carried out by long term Pete Townshend and The Who collaborator Jon Astley, using original master tapes. CD1 consists of the original album as it was released, CD2 includes unreleased tracks, alternative versions of songs such as Parvardigar, Day Of Silence and live performances.

Another great Who related release. There was an expanded version of this many years ago though it wasn't two discs. I've got that and I'll get this.

I hope the live performances are solo live in India 1972. I didn't get his Meher Baba dvd when he was selling it on Eel Pie so I missed out.

This is great and I hope more Deluxes follow.

Not sure why anyone would be unhappy with this?

Bannings: They were all unfortunate misunderstandings
Hmm. Naive of me I know but I was expecting to see the usual bonus tracks on the first CD. And yeah, this was a golden but missed opportunity to dig out 'Classified'. Oh, and they've left off Lantern Cabin.

Still, it's good to have this, even if the words '2017 Edit' fill me with trepidation. I'd also rather they'd have put the original full 6 minute version of Evolution on there, and maybe Ronnie's live version from India if it was ever recorded, than the memorial version. Still I suppose those might turn up on that forthcoming box set of Ronnie's own.

This has been pushed back a week, to April 20th, so that it comes out on the same day as The Who's Live At The Fillmore East 1968:

I love this set, although the packaging is sort of odd--two CD's in a DVD sized case. (The plastic trays even have a DVD logo.)

Still this is some of my all-time favorite music, and this is probably the widest CD release yet that the 9:50 instrumental version of "Baba O'Riley" has ever received. The miniature version of the original poster is a welcome addition as well.

My only real complaint is with the booklet--it's printed in this tiny pseudo-script font that I'm finding impossible to read. If I ever want to read it, I'm going to have to find the time to scan the booklet and enlarge it.

In the meantime, all I can say is: Keep 'em coming, Pete.

I keep telling myself that I need to try and put together a Townshend discography that attempts to pull together all of the various odds and ends that I've accumulated over the years. Right now the best source is that Whitefang site, but I find it flawed in that it contains more audio reviews than actual release info. (I've also heard that Daltrey has a fair amount of rare solo stuff not mentioned on that site.)

The biggest piece of Townshend-related music I have still never gotten around to hearing is Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert. I really need to poop or get off the pot on that one.

The front of the package is shown in the first post. Here's what the back looks like:

Matt Kent has been working on a comprehensive Who solo guide for some time now (http://thewhofourfaces.com/)

As for Classified, Lantern Cabin, et al, perhaps they'll show up on expanded Scoops?
