Description
On September 7, 1968, John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant first took the stage together in Gladsaxe, Denmark. Then billed as ‘The New Yardbirds,’ the band would assemble in the studio for the first time later that month to start recording their debut album as Led Zeppelin, and rock ‘n’ roll would never be the same again. Before the band’s 50th Anniversary celebration officially begins in September, Led Zeppelin will continue their reissue campaign with a new edition of their celebrated live album How The West Was Won, originally released in 2003, featuring newly remastered audio, which was done under the supervision of Jimmy Page. Details of additional Led Zeppelin 50th Anniversary releases and events will be announced later this year.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON will be released on March 23 in multiple formats from Atlantic/Swan Song, including the first ever vinyl and Blu-ray Audio editions (with the Blu-ray containing hi-res 5.1 surround sound).

* CD – Remastered audio on three CDs
* Vinyl – Remastered audio on four 180-gram vinyl LPs.
* Blu-Ray Audio – 96kHz/24 bit 5.1 (DTS-HD Master Audio Surround) and stereo mixes (PCM Stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio Stereo).
* Super Deluxe Boxed Set
– Remastered audio on three CDs and four 180-gram vinyl LPs.
– DVD of album in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo, plus photo gallery.
– High-def download card of all stereo audio content at 96kHz/24 bit.
– A book filled with rare and previously unpublished photos of the band at each of the concert locations, plus memorabilia and ephemera.
– High-quality print of the original album cover, the first 30,000 of which will be individually numbered.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON highlights the best performances from Led Zeppelin’s legendary concerts at the Los Angeles Forum and Long Beach Arena on June 25 and 27, 1972. Melded together and sequenced to replicate a single concert from beginning to end, the three-CD and four-LP collections capture the band at the height of its formidable powers. Standouts include a 25-plus minute version of ‘Dazed And Confused’ and a 21-minute medley based around ‘Whole Lotta Love.’ The performances also capture the band introducing songs from its then-unreleased album Houses Of The Holy, which would be released nine months later.”

No pre-order links yet, but at least Smiff won't have to worry about me stealing this one.

I'll get my own on this one.

;)

Quote:
Jimmy Page recently said he's heading back into Led Zeppelin's vaults for the band's 50th anniversary next year, and he noted there will be some previously unheard music to help celebrate.

In a new 50-minute video for the Academy of Achievement, Page was asked about Zeppelin's golden anniversary next year, and he said, “There’ll be Led Zeppelin product coming out, for sure, that people haven’t heard, because I’m working on that. Next year will be the 50th year, so there’s all manner of surprises coming out.”

You can watch the video above.

Page remastered the band's catalog for a series of expanded reissues that wrapped up in 2015. All nine Led Zeppelin studio albums, including 1982's leftovers set Coda, came with bonus discs that collected outtakes and other previously unreleased music from the era. An expanded edition of The Complete BBC Sessions followed in 2016.

At the time the remastered reissues came out, Page said that pretty much all of the band's studio outtakes were collected on the bonus discs, but there's definitely some still available (like the epic long version of "All My Love").

In October, Led Zeppelin News reported that engineer John Davis, who worked with Page on the remasters, posted a Facebook update that said: "Today I am mostly mastering Led Zeppelin." The post was deleted, but as Led Zeppelin News notes, the Page interview was filmed on Oct. 19, shortly before Davis' post, so when the guitarist says "I'm working on that," it could refer to unearthed music he's remastering with Davis.

Right now, it's unclear whether these previously unheard Led Zeppelin tracks will be more studio leftovers, like the majority of the bonus cuts found on the 2014-15 remasters, or live songs, since there's likely plenty of unreleased concert recordings in the band's vaults.

I don't have high hopes for this. I was happy with the deluxe version of the first album and a handful of tracks on the others, but alternate mixes are just not that interesting to me (with the exception of The Beatles). Live shows would be great and sufficiently different studio tracks would be as well.

Yep, there's a lot of stuff that bootleggers have released in so-so quality out there from the studio and we're not talking mixes or rough demos.

There's also more in video such as Bath 1970 and the UK gig from 1973 that was at a college or some small venue I forget.

the cube?

that is the one i have, along with 'songs remain the same' and 'bbc recordings' is just about all i need,

it's not like led zeppelin played lots of different covers in concerts.

No, but they were re-inventive live of their own stuff and did cover of many blues tracks. Having the blessing to see them live during their peak time I can attest. The boots document this as well. I am hoping for great finds here.

Sadly Jimi Page stated many years back that he was robbed (at his home) of many of his archive concert tapes. Let's hope some can be returned for these reissues if live recordings are to be.

I would just add the set called How The West Was Won and you would have basically a great Led Zep collection. I was shocked how good How The West is when I first heard it.

You see, that's what I am saying. If Jimmy can get some of those awesome recordings that we all know about and re-master with today's technology it's the best we can experience in the Here and the Now. And I say, sign me up!

Renny,

Zep did tons of covers, often doing medleys of old Rock n' Roll and Blues tunes that could stretch into 20-30 minutes long.

I have a book detailing every show they ever played and they did an insane amount of cover songs.

Most of these were their shows from 1968-73, but they still did some later on as well.

I am an enormous Zep fan and there really are very few live releases largely because the bootleggers did such a good job (Page always bought Zep boots in Japan when he was there).

I welcome anything Page comes up with.

Maybe this time Jimmy will include the mashup of "Moby Dick/Bonzo's Montreaux" that didn't end up on any of the deluxe editions.

John got his wish -- the first fruits of this series will be multiple remastered configurations of How The West Was Won. Pre-order links are now in the first post. Initial details from Rhino are very light, expect updates soon.
