ah, gene clark.......
i have strange feelings about gene clark.
critically a darling, byrds fans love his work in the band, and he definitely has a legion of his own fans, who swear by his solo material with blind devotion.
i have about 8 CD's by him, and have gathered them over the years buying one here and one there. aside from 'no other' which i personally believe is his best effort, i have a really hard time listening to his stuff, finding it to be borderline monotonous and somewhat boring. of the four original byrds with solo stuff, i rank him fourth behind crosby, hillman and mcguinn (and mcguinn solo ain;t nothing to write home about either).
is it just me?
how do others feel about gene clark solo?
thanks!

I agree with you on Clark, but go even further- I don't really care for any solo material by the (ex-)Byrds, other than McGuinn's Back From Rio, which was a fairly transparent attempt to make a Byrds-like album, and featured very strong support and song-writing help from Petty and the Heartbreakers, Dave Stewart, Elvis Costello...it really wasn't McGuinn that made the album what it was. Monotonous is a good word for most of their solo work. I'm a heretic, though, because I love the Byrds up to Notorious Byrds Brothers, but just off at Sweetheart of the Rodeo. I know it's a classic, but I just plain don't like it. There are songs in their catalog after it that I like, but they can't match up to the first five albums for me. To that point, I think they were the greatest American rock band at the time.

interesting that you don;t care for crosby or hillman solo. crosby did'n't make a bad solo album (including all 4 CPR albums) and hillman, when he rocks instead of doing bluegrass is also very good. mcguinn solo i can take or leave, but clark, is by far, the lesser of the 4 for me. and the enigmatic 'two sides to every story', that was OOP for years cried for and raved about, and then finally came out at ridiculously high price, was the biggest borefest of them all.
p.s. please give crosby's "if i could only remember my name" a listen, please.

I personally put Gene Clark and McGuinn as a tie for first. Then Crosby and finally Hillman. If Gene would have lived I believe he would have surpassed them all.

His solo stuff is better than any of the other Byrds solo material IMO and I feel he was the best Byrds vocalist so let's just say we agree to disagree.

i just can't figure out what it is about clark that doesn't register with me, i want him too, i really do, else i wouldn't keep buying his stuff.

How about this for an idea. Try to divorce yourself of the Byrds connection and accept him just as a solo artist that is unrelated. I know you love singer-songwriters so this separation if accomplished may help. I know you really like him or you wouldn't have bought much of his solo material.

My favorite post-Byrds work by Clark is the album he made with Carla Olson. Their live one is also very good. As for solo Byrds, my favorite is McGuinn's "Cardiff Rose". I like Hillman well enough, but I don't go out of my way to listen to him.

I don’t have anything on CD by Gene Clark but I have discovered ‘White Light’ and was blown away how good it is.
