This is a fairly lame comp "Lea", really?), but it looks like there are three new songs?
Definitely some questionable choices and plenty of omissions, but it should be worth it for the three new tracks. One of them, "Spanish Sea," is based on an old unfinished recording that features Jeff & Mike Porcaro. Here's a little more info about that:
Quote:
While going through the Sony vaults, the band uncovered several unfinished tracks that featured both Jeff and Mike Porcaro, one of which is now "Spanish Sea." "This track is originally from the Isolation sessions," Steve Lukather commented. "It's one that didn't make it and we had to re-write it including creating a new chorus. Thanks to modern tech we were able to play once again with not only our 20 something selves but with our dear brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro reminding us just how deep their groove was. Bittersweet... Many stories, laughs and a few tears on this one. It's classic Toto with an excellent solo and I kept my old 1985 melody solo Dave wanted me to do... Old meets new but since legendary pal Al Schmitt cut the tracks and Bob Clearmountain mixed...it sounds like it was done 2 weeks ago not 30 + years ago!"

i have a love/hate relationship with TOTO, and an endless parade of compilations is part and parcel of all that. with new tracks, i'll certainly be purchasing it. i would LOVE a tastefully remastered, chronological, and comprehensive anthology on 3 discs. "...and don't f**k it up!"

The only thing I hate about Toto is that more people don't take them seriously as a kick-ass band because of a handful of softer rock songs (that just happen to be awesome). I agree that there should be a thorough, well-chosen compilation on the market. Hasn't Sony done at least a 2-disc collection?

There was a 3 CD one that came out last year or the year before that almost got things right.
As for Toto, years ago I posted they were, in actuality, a Hard Rock band (which Luke himself has said) with Jazz and R&B leanings and occasional Prog Rock moments.
I was flamed by some nutjob who insulted me and trashed me to no end.
That fool was banned though I don't remember who it was.
Having seen Toto live 7 times, owning every album and loads of DVDs...yeah, they rock and they know Hard Rock.

I did my best to spread the word about their awesomeness in a 5-part blog series about their discography in 2015, but I think I was merely preaching to the choir. At least it gave me an excuse to revisit & really dig in to their catalog, which is the main reason for my blog anyway.

Yeah, and I stated in another thread that their heaviest song was the title track from the 2006 disc Falling in Between. Absolutely heavy with the usual Toto twist. And with Bobby Kimball on vocals no less.
That song blew me away with the weird drum, bass, and guitar beat. I'm no musician, but even I know that the song would be hard for the average band to play.

That song is a beast and it is very much like Dream Theater.

From Gibson.com:
2018 is shaping up to be a banner year for Toto. A new compilation album – featuring three unreleased songs and one new track – will be released in February, and a 40th anniversary world tour is set to kick off that same month.
“We’re still here, man, and I’m proud of that,” co-founder Steve Lukather recently told Billboard. “We’ve taken every punch known to man … running up a vertical glass mountain with butter on our feet for 40 years, hanging on for dear life. We were never cool; in fact, we were the antithesis of that. We were studio musicians [who] studied our instruments. Since when is being good at what you do a deficit?”
Also in the works is a limited edition boxed set featuring remastered editions of all of Toto’s albums. Previously unreleased material will be included with the set as well.
“The next couple of years could be the hugest in the history of the band,” observes Lukather. “People are looking at us differently now. We're getting some respect for what we've done over the years.”

And I see they wisely included Afraid of Love which I think is one of their best rockers and most under-rated tunes. Loved the one-two punch of Afraid of Love and Lovers in the Night to start off side 2 of Toto IV.

Agreed. I love that song and was thrilled that they played it on the most recent tour!

Toto posted "Spanish Sea" on YouTube today. This is a "new" song based on a basic track they recorded during the Isolation sessions, with the rhythm section of Mike & Jeff Porcaro. I like it a lot.
