The Specials was ranked among the top ten "Albums of the Year" for 1979 by NME. In June 2000 Q placed The Specials at number 38 in its list of the 100 greatest British albums ever. Pitchfork Media featured The Specials at number 42 in their list of the "Top 100 Albums of the 1970s". Rolling Stone listed the album at number 68 in their list "100 Best Albums of the Eighties", as the album was not released in the US until 1980.

More Specials was released in October 1980. The album hit the Top Five in the UK, where singles "Rat Race", "Stereotype" and "Do Nothing" hit the Top Ten. "Rat Race" hit No. 89 on Billboard Music Chart's (US) Club Play Singles chart, while the album hit No. 98 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart.

In the Studio is the third album from The Specials, released in 1984, long after the breakup of the original Specials. It charted in the UK Top 35 and featured the two popular singles, "(Free) Nelson Mandela" and "Racist Friend".
