Woodstock box set unearths rarities
By GARY GRAFF
Billboard.com
DETROIT — Thirty-eight previously unreleased recordings — from
groups such as The Who, the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater
Revival and Jefferson Airplane — will dot “Woodstock — 40 Years On:
Back to Yasgur’s Farm” box set, which will be released on Aug. 18.
Among the highlights of the six-CD, 77-song collection are a
19-minute rendition of the Dead’s “Dark Star”; “Amazing Journey”
and “Pinball Wizard” by The Who; “Feelin’ Alright” by Joe Cocker;
CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising”; Blood, Sweat & Tears’ “You’ve Made Me So
Very Happy”; and tracks from Sweetwater, Bert Sommer, Tim Hardin,
Ravi Shankar, Joan Baez, Melanie, Country Joe and The Fish, Sha Na Na,
the Butterfield Blues Band, Johnny Winter and others.
The set, which lists for $79.98, also restores full-length
performances of Canned Heat’s “Woodstock Boogie” (to a whopping 30
minutes) and The Who’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” It also includes
the never-released Woodstock performances of Arlo Guthrie’s “Coming
Into Los Angeles” and Mountain’s “Theme For an Imaginary Western,”
which were replaced by “better-sounding” recordings from other
concerts for the original “Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music”
soundtrack.
The track lineup is accurate to the actual running order of the
legendary 1969 festival and also includes stage announcements, Wavy
Gravy’s announcement of “breakfast in bed” for the crowd estimated
at 500,000, Max Yasgur’s famous speech to the crowd and audio of Abbie
Hoffman’s encounter with Who guitarist Pete Townshend.
“This will be the most comprehensive collection of Woodstock music
yet,” says Rhino Vice-President of A&R Cheryl Pawelski. “The goal
was to make it as real as possible ... as authentic an experience as
possible. It feels like dirt. It feels like a field. We wanted to take
you there. We worked very hard to make it a true document of that
time.”
Co-producers Andy Zax and Mason Williams compiled “40 Years On”
from the original multitrack tapes recorded during the festival. Their
research also allowed them to put the songs and artists in the correct
performance order, and the accompanying booklet will include the
accurate sequence complete with full set lists.
One performance is conspicuously absent; Pawelski says Ten Years
After would not clear the use of its performance for the box, meaning
the group’s epic version of “Goin’ Home” will not be included. The
Band and Keef Hartley were the only other acts that opted out of the
set.
“40 Years On” follows the re-releases of “Woodstock: Music From
the Original Soundtrack and More” and “Woodstock 2.” A new
Woodstock.com also launched the first week of June and a new DVD
edition of “Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music — The Director’s
Cut” comes out Tuesday, June 9. And on June 30, added to the
onslaught will be “Woodstock Experience” editions of seminal albums
by five of the festival’s acts: Jefferson Airplane’s “Volunteers,”
Janis Joplin’s “I Got Dem ’Ol Kozmic Blues Again Mama!,” Santana’s
self-titled debut album, Sly & the Family Stone’s “Stand!” and
Johnny Winter’s self-titled effort — each with a second CD featuring
the acts’ complete Woodstock performances.

OK, so this new set includes some, but not all, of the material from the original two albums. How does it stack up against the previous box set?

Of course, I'll buy it regardless...

Why would you opt out of a historic document? And in the case of TYA, Goin' Home is in the freaking movie, on the original soundtrack, and on the previous 4 CD Box set. And The Band also had three songs on the previous box set.

Missing songs from the previous 4 CD "Woodstock: Three Days of Peace & Music:"

Tim Harden - If I Were a Carpenter
Arlo Guthrie - Walkin' Down the Line
Canned Heat - Leaving This Town
C.C.R. - Commotion, Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)
Janis Joplin - Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)
Jefferson Airplane - Uncle Sam Blues, White Rabbit
Ten Years After - I'm Going Home (NOTE: Artist refused release of song)
The Band - Long Black Veil, Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever, The Weight (NOTE: Artist refused release of songs)
CSN - Find the Cost of Freedom
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)/Stepping Stone

Sounds like once again, I have to buy a Woodstock box AND keep the original editions, too. GRR. Other then the 2 disc remasters from last week, I have bought every freaking edition of woodstock ever released, on LP, cd, VHS & DVD. $80 is a bit pricey also; I bought the last box from BMG club probably for 30 ish.

The following previously released tracks appear to be missing. I'm surprised how many there are. There appears to be a total of 26 tracks previously released on Woodstock comps that will not be on this box. Of course in addition we're also missing tracks from the Hendrix & Santana complete Woodstock releases, & the odd track from different artists best of & rarities comps. It sure would be nice to have everything in 1 set. I ROUGHLY count 37 tracks new to this box. I sure hope the cd's at least run 80 minutes each; if I remember right the previous box was around 60 minutes per disc.

The Box (fyi cheap on Amazon from 3rd party sellers at the moment): 15 tracks:

If I Were a Carpenter - Tim Hardin
Coming into Los Angeles - Arlo Guthrie (original version)
Walkin' Down the Line - Arlo Guthrie
Leaving This Town - Canned Heat
Commotion - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do) - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Try (Just a Little Bit Harder) - Janis Joplin
Uncle Sam Blues - Jefferson Airplane
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
I'm Going Home - Ten Years After
Long Black Veil - The Band
Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever The Band
The Weight - The Band
Find the Cost of Freedom - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Voodoo Child (Slight Return)/Stepping Stone - Jimi Hendrix

Woodstock 1 (original) 2 tracks:

Coming into Los Angeles - Arlo Guthrie (original version)
I'm Going Home - Ten Years After

Woodstock 2: 5 tracks:

Jam Back At The House - Jimi Hendrix
Izabella - Jimi Hendrix
Get My Heart Back Together [Live Woodstock Version] - Jimi Hendrix
Eskimo Blue Day - Jefferson Airplane
Theme for an Imaginary Western - Mountain (original version)

Woodstock Diary 10 tracks:

The Weight - The Band
Blackbird - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Try (Just a Little Bit Harder) - Janis Joplin
I Can't Make It Anymore - Richie Havens
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
If I Were a Carpenter - Tim Hardin
Southbound Train - Mountain
Love City - Sly & the Family Stone
I Shall Be Released - Joe Cocker
Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix

The Best of Woodstock
1 track:
I'm Going Home -Ten Years After

I'll buy the new boxed set. There's some overlap, sure, but it's not like the Monterey Pop Festival reissues which have tended to include only one or two new songs. I would just hope that they're not trying to pass off songs like "Pinball Wizard" or John Sebastian's "How Have You Been" as "previously unreleased" because they've never appeared on any Woodstock package.

I'm holding off on any DVD purchase, however. While I recognize that the "Woodstock" motion picture is a classic documentary, I'm not much for sitting down in front of the TV to watch concerts or music videos.

And here's the text of Rhino's press release:

WOODSTOCK—40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM

Rhino Marks The Festival’s 40th Anniversary With A 6-CD Boxed Set
Featuring The Most Comprehensive Collection Ever Available Of
Artists That Performed At The Festival

Features 38 Previously Unreleased Tracks;
Available August 18

Remastered Versions Of The Woodstock Documentary’s Out-of-Print
Original Soundtrack And Follow-up Released June 2

LOS ANGELES — Much has been written about the significance of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair as a cultural event. Ironically, what has been least examined up to now is the very thing that brought nearly half a million together in 1969: the music itself. As the historic festival marks its 40-year anniversary, Rhino presents WOODSTOCK—40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR’S FARM, a 77-song, six-CD collection that features the most comprehensive collection ever available of artists that performed at the original festival, sequenced in chronological order of performance, featuring 38 previously unreleased recordings, including the Grateful Dead, The Who, Tim Hardin, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish, and others. WOODSTOCK—40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR’S FARM will be available August 18 at all retail outlets, including http://www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $79.98.

To assemble the most comprehensive document of the myth-steeped weekend, the boxed set’s co-producer Andy Zax pored over every inch of multitrack tape in search of the strongest parts of each of the 33 sets. “The way we approached all of the material was as if it was a cinéma verité documentary—the raw record of the event,” Zax says. In addition to the music, the set offers considerable amount of ancillary material sprinkled throughout the discs—stage announcements, lysergic babble, the sounds of rain, a cameo appearance by Abbie Hoffman, and the graciousness of Max Yasgur’s address to the crowd, heard for the first time in its entirety.

Another significant byproduct of WOODSTOCK—40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM is that, by virtue of its size and rigorously chronological sequence, it gets closer to a sense of the performances as they occurred in real time than any previous compilation. For the first time, the complete and accurate set lists will be available in the boxed set’s booklet. Some Woodstock aficionados will be taken aback by the actual order of the performances; it differs from both various written accounts and from Michael Wadleigh’s film Woodstock, which takes certain liberties with chronology in order to maintain its narrative flow.

In addition to the boxed set, Rhino will also reissue the long out-of-print MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK and WOODSTOCK TWO on June 2, simultaneously with Warner Home Video’s reissue of the documentary film Woodstock. Originally released in 1970 as a triple-LP, MUSIC FROM THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK AND MORE: WOODSTOCK topped Billboard’s Pop album chart for four weeks, and was a Top 20 R&B album as well.

Following the chart-topping, multiplatinum success of the original soundtrack, 1971’s WOODSTOCK TWO served up even more peace and music. Originally released as a double-LP, it expands the listening experience with 16 additional performances. Each set was remastered from the original analog soundboard tapes from the historic 1969 concert, and the release features rare photos and new liner notes. Both double-CD sets will be available June 2 for a suggested list price of $24.98 each.

Again, how is this "never before released" when it was released thirty years ago as part of "The Kids Are Alright" film and soundtrack album?

I based my previous post on John H's post.

Based on McGeorge's post, there are aprox 16 songs i don't have that I'd want. Hmm...... $80 for 16 songs???? The remastering best be darned good!

Sad thing is 2 cd's more & we'd have EVERYTHING EVER released as a VARIOUS ARTISTS "Woodstock" cd + the 37 or so new songs.

Well, unfortunately it will never happen since the artists won't sign off on it. At least there will be the Johnny Winter, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, and Sly and the Family Stone sets coming out on the "Woodstock Experience" releases. Too bad we can't get the entire set from The Who released on both CD and Video like we did with Hendrix.

This is getting very confusing...

What do I need to buy - CD wise - to get everything that has ever been officially released from Woodstock?

Ones I'm aware of:
Both Woodstock Box Sets
Woodstock 2
Woodstock Diary
Jimi Hendrix At Woodstock
The 5 new Woodstock + studio album sets:
Jefferson Airplane
Santana
Johnny Winter
Janis Joplin
Sly & The Family Stone

That's everything I'm aware of. All 4 of the WS titles i mention above would be needed to be complete.

Here's my Woodstock purchasing history (or as much of it as i remember).
Prices paid are guesses.

Movie in Theater $3
Woodstock - 3 LP Set $15
Woodstock 2 - 2 LP Set $10
Woodstock 2 - Japan 2 LP Set $30
Woodstock VHS $10
Woodstock - 2 DVD Set - BMG Club $15
Woodstock 2 - 2 DVD Set $20
Woodstock Diary probably BMG Club $6
Woodstock Best probably BMG Club $6
Woodstock DVD $15
Woodstock Box BMG Club probably around $30
Aprox total $160

Without BMG Club it would be doubled. And they expect us to pay $122-$140 to buy it all again?????? :sigh: :sigh:

Amazon's preorder is not for the Rhino 6-CD box, but rather for Sony Music's packaging of their 5 "Woodstock Experience" 2-CD sets together as a 10-CD box with additional poster. These 2-CD sets(Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Johnny Winter, Sly & The Family Stone & Janis Joplin) combine the artist's complete Woodstock performance with their then-latest studio album. The five 2-CD sets can be bought for less when purchased separately.

My bad, you are right. Best Buy's could also be either. Weird that it's not up yet. I will edit my posts above to reflect McGeorge's 79.99
list price.
