Just when you thought you'd already bought the post 1970 Stones catalog...

http://www.albumvote.co.uk/news/article ... adline=368

Rolling Stones Back Catalogue to get a Makeover

Universal Records are to give no fewer than 19 Rolling Stones albums a makeover and re-release in the coming months. Not even one month has passed since The Rolling Stones switched from EMI to Universal but their new label are wasting no time in releasing deluxe versions of:

'Black and Blue', 'Bridges to Babylon', 'Dirty Work', 'Emotional Rescue', 'Exile on Main Street', 'Flashpoint', 'Goat’s Head Soup', 'It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll', 'Jump Back – The Best of The Rolling Stones (1971-1993)', 'Live Licks', 'Love You Live', 'Made in the Shade', 'Steel Wheels', 'Sticky Fingers', 'Still Life', 'Stripped', 'Tattoo You', 'Undercover', 'Voodoo Lounge'.

I know at least one ICEr who'll be re-buying part of his already considerable Stones collection!

No clues, but he inspired the catchphrase "Jimbo lunch." 8-)

Hell, I'm in for Sticky Fingers if the bonus stuff is worthwhile, at least! :D

Yeah, but Chris, let's see what definition that Universal constitutes as Deluxe Editions. Are they going to be 2-CD Deluxe Editions or what? We're going to have to wait and see how this pans out. If some of the individual albums get the "true" Deluxe Edition treatment, then I'm going to get really excited. Hopefully, Universal is going to clarify this statement very soon (as in Get on it, guys. Right now!). If they are just straight reissues, then it's all going to be for nothing.

We shall see. I was listening to my old Columbia CD of Sticky Fingers recently and felt it was a little lacking sonically. I asked Jimbo if the Virgin remaster was better and he said yes, but he also mentioned these deluxe versions. I figure I'll wait to see what these "deluxe editions" have to offer.

My exact words when I read this thread heading:

"Oh no."

Jimbo's thoughts upon reading this thread title:

"I get to buy them again? Yes!"

I don't suppose these will get the same DSD remaster and 2-channel SACD/CD hybrid treatment as with the ABKCO releases of the earlier material, will they?

I doubt it. Universal (at least in the US) seems to have abandoned SACD. And I don't think they do DSD for their releases, as well.

Too bad. I really like the DSD remasters that I do have. Get Yer Ya Ya's Out is my favorite of the bunch.

Universal did SACD for a batch of Elton Johns, which I believe are still in print. Sticky Fingers in SACD would be awesome. I've never heard a really good sounding edition of SF; even the Mo-FI LP wasn't very good. Course, it's possible it wasn't well recorded.

The Abcko Stones SACD's are the best sounding SACD's I've heard.

One other thought: Sticky Fingers is (as most folks know) the splitting off point from Abcko/London Stones to what's now owned by Universal. I personally see Sticky Fingers as part of their early output (maybe because it was on Hot Rocks??) & the last of their truly great records (I like many of the records they did afterwards, but SF is for me the end of an era). To me, Exile On Main Street really feels like the split from the Hot Rocks era material to the next phase rather then SF.

A couple of things are nagging me about this announcement:

1. There is no other corroborating story on the web that I can find right now. I had to sound anglophobic, but the stuff you read on some of these UK websites tends to be um...well, remember how Led Zeppelin was supposed to play the Bonnaroo festival a couple of months back?

2. "Deluxe Edition" has become one of the most overused phrases in modern music marketing (the other is "previously unreleased")

3. I can understand a "deluxe edition" of "Sticky Fingers", "Some Girls", and even "Steel Wheels", "Flashpoint" and "Voodoo Lounge". But "Made In The Shade" and "Jump Back"?

As Steve said, hopefully there will be some official clarification of this announcement.

For what it's worth (and I'm no audiophile) I loved the 1994 remasters, for no better reason than I cut my teeth back in the 1980's on some pretty wretched-sounding Stones LP's and ABKCO cassettes (and crummy audio equipment, I must admit). To finally hear what Charlie and Bill were actually doing in the studio all those years was pretty amazing. And I've just recently been getting into the 2002 ABKCO remasters--"Their Satanic Majesties Request" sounds especially awesome, as does "12x5" and "Beggar's Banquet".

I'd try the Sticky Fingers deluxe edition to see if it sounds any better than what I already own. Doubt I'll rebuy the rest of the collection.

I bet we get a mono/stereo deal with maybe a couple (non) rarities. I have no faith these will be anything but a gouge.

I will buy every one of these no matter what, because I have only a few of the last Virgin remasters, and wasn't all that impressed-I didn't think they were any better than the original CDs.
I have been holding off for years and years in hopes of this announcement-but I'll still wait to be excited until we see just what this all means, especially the "deluxe" part. But, since I don't havew most of the albums remastered anyway, I'm on board! Some new liner notes might be nice too!

Curious that Some Girls wouldn't be in this group.
If it's really happening.
And, like many of you. I have my doubts.

It's also curious that Jimbo hasn't said a word in this thread!

How can we get mono editions of '70s albums? Mono was passé by then.

Surely, you're joking. The only 1970's Rolling Stones selections for which there are mono mixes are "Brown Sugar" & "Bitch".

If they are SACD, then yes, I'd buy em all. If their just loudly remastered atrocities, I'll pass unless the "deluxe" is truely deluxe....whatever deluxe means these days.

But it makes sense for the company to re-issue them all....thats how they make money.

Oh, btw....I was with Jimbo at the Human League concert last night and he said he will not be tempted by this obvious money ploy by Universal. He shall be strong. :p

Is that what I said? Funny, I don't remember saying that!

More likely :yay2: :yahoo: :happyjoy: :bounce: :thewave:

Although this all seems prematurely optimistic, considering the catalog just changed hands. I'm sure it'll take many months to put together proposed packages, and get everything cleared, designed, and pressed. Assuming we get physical product, and not just downloads.

Well, we'll have to wait and see what happens. I would like to have a better sounding Sticky Fingers myself.
