The standard CD comes in a jewel case with 12 page full colour booklet containing Teller Juergen portrait photos. The deluxe CD comes in a mintpack containing 2 bonus tracks and a 16 page full colour booklet containing Juergen Teller portrait photos.
So the consumer pays the extra six bucks for two extra songs and as a part of that gets stuck with a crappy, cheap cardboard package. If being environmentally friendly is the purpose for packaging the deluxe CD in cardboard, then why is the standard edition being packed in a jewel case? How does this make any sense at all?

This is the album Davey Johnstone told me about back in March when I interviewed him for my book.
Frickin' amazing guy by the way.
He explained to me they had to go back into the studio after tour dates to record bonus tracks specifically for retailers.
He wasn't thrilled by it but also explained there's no way the album comes out with the retailers' backing.
It was very interesting to learn that.
He told me they recorded 4-5 tunes.
I forgot you interviewed him (and I've been quite remiss about checking on the book - gotta do that soon!). (ETA: And I just saw the thread in the Books forum. There aren't enough facepalms to cover this...)
I'm not thrilled with the retailer-exclusive stuff, but I wish artists would be upfront about this stuff - just say they need the backing to release the albums.

Book will be out around April, Alan. Trust me, I'll post about it when the time comes.
It was weird hearing him say that they were hitting the studio to record retailer tracks, but I'd guess it's not too different than when labels would demand b-sides be recorded.

now the question remains that of the 4 or 5 extra tracks which ones show up with which retailers......i hate this shit, i really do.
You and me both. At first it didn't bother me when there were usually two choices, standard version and "deluxe" available everywhere or at select retailers with specific bonus tracks. But now it seems there are different bonus tracks depending on what you buy, where you buy, when you buy. I had to buy the Target version of the last Florence + The Machine to get the maximum amount of bonus tracks. Cost at least $6 more IIRC and came in a cardboard sleeve that arrived with damaged corners. What seemed like a good idea (bonus tracks) now looks like a scam. Whew......rant over.
I think I'll buy the standard version of the new Elton John, at least that way I avoid the crappy cardboard packing, and be done with it. If it's like his last few albums it will only get played once anyway LOL.

here is what i know...so far.
at eltonjohn.com,
standard CD - 13.99 deluxe w/2 bonus songs - 19.99 super deluxe w/4 bonus songs (including the 2 above) - 84.99
so, disregarding the frills (books, photos and various non-music items) you get 2 extra songs for $6.00 and 4 extra songs for $71.00....you read it correctly....$71.
at amazon:
standard is $13.98 and the deluxe w/the same 2 bonus songs is $19.47....50¢ cheaper than above....no price yet for the super deluxe at amazon, that i could find

Doncha' just love the record indsutry and how it markets it products.
Imagine of food companies did something like this. Super deluxe tomatoes- fresh, unspolied and good to eat. Deluxe tomatoes- some mold which can be cut off and maybe some bugs inside. Standard tomatos- have been standing around for a few months, lots of mold and bugs, but can still be eaten by those with a strong constitution.

Checking other retailer sites--
At Best Buy: $12.99 for standard CD; $14.99 for deluxe (no track list)
At Target: $13.99 for standard CD; $16.99 for "exclusive Target version with 2 extra songs" (no track list, but for many such releases in the past, the Target version includes the bonus tracks from the generally available deluxe editions PLUS extra songs that are exclusive to the Target version)
At Barnes & Noble: $12.62 for standard CD; $17.09 for "special edition" (no track list)
