New Noel Gallagher album 'has the spirit of 'Definitely Maybe''

Noel Gallagher is recording a new album which has the spirit of Oasis' debut album, according to Gallagher's long-term associate Mark Coyle.

Coyle, who co-produced Oasis' debut album 'Definitely Maybe', told NME he heard demos for Gallagher's new album earlier this month (February) following recording sessions Gallagher made in New York.

"Noel's new album is fucking great," said Coyle."It reminds me in some respects of the spirit of 'Definitely Maybe', because it’s so obviously exciting. That boy is from a different planet, and even the fans won't believe how utterly amazing it is."

Coyle, a friend of Gallagher’s since they were both in Inspiral Carpets' road crew in the early '90s, said Gallagher had written between 50 to 60 songs for the new album. "He’s not exactly struggling for an 11th song to complete the album," said Coyle. "It's pouring out of him and he’s currently whittling it all down into an album. The new record will be seismic. It's so explosive that, on the day it comes out, Virgin Trains won’t be able to cope with all the people trying to flee the chaos."

Noel Gallagher announces new album 'Chasing Yesterday' and UK tour dates

Noel Gallagher has announced details of new album 'Chasing Yesterday'. Hear new single 'In The Heat Of The Moment' above now.

The album will be released on March 2, 2015 under the name of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. The details were announced during a Facebook Q&A in London earlier today (October 13).

In addition to the album, details of a UK arena tour were also announced with dates in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Nottingham and Belfast. Scroll down for full details.

Johnny Marr performs on the closing track, which will be the second single from the album. "He's a very enthusiastic artist and I tried to get him to play on 'What A Life', Gallagher said. "He's a truly great guitarist and he has something that nobody else has. He's amazing, a top man."

Confirming details of 'Chasing Yesterday', Gallagher said: "I've never been involved in two successful albums in a row. After '…Morning Glory?', we [Oasis] blew the one after that."

The lead single from 'Chasing Yesterday' will be 'In The Heat Of The Moment'. Speaking about the song, Noel said: "The first single was the last track to be recorded. It's called 'In The Heat Of The Moment'. Is it great? Of course it is. What does it mean, it doesn't mean anything."

The album was self-produced after Gallagher's regular producer, Dave Sardy, was unavailable to work on the record. "I enjoyed the freedom of it but not the responsibility," Noel said. "I'm used to asking people, 'What are we doing today?' and then people were asking me that question. I finished it the day after the World Cup final. I finished it early, I've been sitting on it a while, it's been burning a hole in my pocket."

The Q&A was then handed over to fans in the audience with Gallagher immediately asked about the chances of him performing songs from 'Chasing Yesterday' "when" Oasis perform. Noel's answer was a simple: "What reunion?"

'Chasing Yesterday' tracklist

'Riverman'
'In The Heat Of The Moment'
'The Girl With X-Ray Eyes'
'Lock All The Doors'
'The Dying Of The Light'
'The Right Stuff'
'While The Song Remains The Same'
'The Mexican'
'You Know We Can't Go Back'
'Ballad Of The Mighty I'

Noel Gallagher will play:

Belfast, Odyssey Arena (March 3)
Dublin, 3 Arena (4)
Nottingham, Capital FM Arena (6)
Glasgow, The SSE Hydro (7)
Manchester, Arena, (9)
London, O2 Arena (10)

Johnny Marr says Noel Gallagher's new album is 'very melodic' and 'pretty rocking'

Johnny Marr has spoken about recording a track for Noel Gallagher's new album 'Chasing Yesterday', saying that the record is both "very melodic" and "pretty rocking" too.

Marr appears on the album's closing song 'Ballad Of The Mighty I', which will be the second single. Speaking in this week's NME, Marr details his time spent in the studio with Noel.

"He contacted me and said he had a song that he'd be happy for me to play on," Marr says. "I accpeted, gladly, and it was was really good to spend a day playing guitar in a little studio near Chelsea Bridge. When that was done I listened to about eight songs on the album."

Asked how the album sounds, Marr continues: "It's really good. What I heard of it was very melodic, some of it pretty rocking too, and fans are going to really like it. He doesn't do things he doesn't think are great. And his singing is really good on the album."

The Smiths guitarist turned solo singer also suggests that 'Chasing Yesterday' could prove more of a challenge than Gallagher's 2011 debut solo effort. "In some ways it might be more of a challenge than the first, because he's building on a successful solo career, essentially on his own. But he's smart and everyone knows he knows what he's doing."

Noel Gallagher unveils video for Johnny Marr collaboration 'Ballad Of The Mighty I'

Noel Gallagher has unveiled the video for his new single, 'Ballad Of The Mighty I'.

The track, taken from Gallagher's forthcoming second solo album 'Chasing Yesterday', features Johnny Marr on guitar. The single will be released on February 23, one week before the album hits the shelves.

Gallagher said Marr arrived to record the track without even listening to a demo. "He just arrived with two guitars and a bag of effects pedals. And I have to say, he’s unbelievable. He’s way up there, on another level to the rest of us. The result is a burst of energy that helped make '…Mighty I' one of the best songs I’ve ever written."

Gallagher returned the favour by appearing on stage at Marr's show at O2 Academy Brixton on November 23, where they performed a cover of Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life' and 'How Soon Is Now' by Marr's former band The Smiths. Gallagher later said he was suffering from a hangover during the performance.

"I don’t think I've ever been so fucking hungover onstage in all my life," he said. "I was getting a back rub from his wife about two minutes before going onstage. If somebody had come up to me and said 'You don't have to do this' I would have been, like, 'Fucking, yes'. It was my wife's birthday the night before and we'd smashed the arse out of it. I forgot I was playing with him. I promised him because he played on my record. He said 'Get up and do 'How Soon Is Now'' and then he drops another song on me on the day. But I did it because I'm a fucking trooper."

"I'd never played 'Lust For Life' before. You forget that you know all the words to it. 'How Soon Is Now' drags on a bit though, doesn't it?"

At a live Q&A for XFM on November 3, Gallagher recalled how Marr was possibly the first Oasis fan. Gallagher said: "During the acid house craze in the late '80s I'd bump into this guy in The Haçienda: didn't know his name or who he was. And we weren't friends, we were just on nodding terms. One day, I bought the The The album 'Dusk', which Marr played on. And I bump into this guy I recognise from the Hacienda. He asked me what I bought and he said, 'Oh, our kid plays on that.' I said, 'Who's your kid?' And he said, 'Johnny Marr'. I was like, 'Wow'. I told him I was in a band and he said, 'Give us a cassette and I'll give it to our kid.' Within an hour, Johnny had called me. And I was a nobody – nobody was into our band, bar the five people in it and a few hangers-on. That was it. But he was on the phone saying, 'Ah, I think this is great.' So in many ways he was the first ever fan. Two days later I go for a drink with him. He asked where I get my guitars from. 'Guitars? Guitars? I'll tell you where I got my one guitar from."

Noel Gallagher compares new album to 'T Rex, The Rolling Stones and Queens Of The Stone Age'

Click for full size

Noel Gallagher has said a song on his new album is a mix of "T Rex, The Rolling Stones and Queens Of The Stone Age" while stating the another is one of his favourite things he has ever written.

Gallagher's High Flying Birds release new album 'Chasing Yesterday' on March 2. It features the single 'In The Heat Of The Moment' as well as Johnny Marr collaboration 'Ballad Of The Mighty I'.

Speaking to NME in the cover feature of this week's issue, Gallagher describes the saxophone player used on album opener 'The Riverman' as being "summoned from a smoky room in 1963," adding that the song is, "fucking amazing. It's my favourite track on the album, and one of my favourites I've ever done."

Meanwhile, 'The Right Stuff', also taken from the record has numerous influences. Put to him by NME that the song's riff is reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age, Gallagher replies: "I thought The Rolling Stones, and Johnny Marr when he heard it said, 'That's fucking T Rex'. But if it's a cross between T Rex, The Rolling Stones and Queens Of The Stone Age, fucking hell, I'll take that any day."

Noel Gallagher: 'new album is full of songs that make you punch the air while crying'

Noel Gallagher has said that his new album 'Chasing Yesterday' is full of "songs that make you kind of punch in the air while crying a little bit".

The description of the record, which is released on March 2, features in a list of 10 things to know about 'Chasing Yesterday' which features in this week's issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally.

Speaking about the album, Gallagher said that triumphant yet emotional songs are what he feels "most comfortable writing". He added: "It's the Irish in me, that's what we do. We're never happy. We rage joy. Even 'Some Might Say', for instance, is a very melancholic Irish kind of anthem."

Gallagher also said that he had to recruit Johnny Marr to appear on 'Ballad of The Mighty I' because he doesn't have "the funk" like Marr does. "I tried to get him on the last record because there's a bit in 'AKA...What A Life!' that I thought needed a bit of funk, and he's got the funk, but he couldn't do it, so I had to do it. And I was embarrassed doing it because I haven't got the funk."

"The Dying Of The Light" might be the next single. It's a fantastic track, maybe the best on the album. Heartbreakingly, wistfully beautiful in the classic Noel Gallagher tradition. There's a full band version on the album, but here's an acoustic performance on Irish television that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with anything Noel did in Oasis:
