Eric Clapton Records JJ Cale Tribute Album With Tom Petty, Willie Nelson & More

Legendary guitarist JJ Cale is best known for pioneering the Tulsa Sound and writing two songs ("After Midnight" and "Cocaine") that Eric Clapton turned into huge hits. A year after Cale's death, his longtime admirer is paying tribute in a star-studded covers album.

"Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale" drops July 29 and will feature reinterpretations of 16 Cale tracks, performed by Clapton and cohorts like Tom Petty, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Mark Knopfler and more. It drops via Clapton's Bushbranch Records/Surfdog Records.

Last July, Cale died of a heart attack in San Diego at the age of 74. In 2006, Clapton collaborated with Cale for the first time in his career on the 2006 original album "Road to Escondido." Clapton called it "the realization of what may have been my last ambition, to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember.”

A complete tracklisting is available below, with each song's vocalist(s) in parenthesis.

I have been listening to this for the last few days, after borrowing it from the local public library (incidentally, our county library system recently got its funding restored after passage of a levy, a measure I voted for and supported vigorously).

The songs are great, the musicianship is excellent, and it is a fun listen -- in small doses. The disc suffers from a sameness over the long haul, too many songs follow a repetitive vibe that wears thin eventually. Having said that, there are some nice performances, enough to inspire me to buy a copy for myself.
