I am quite excited by this and I knew they reunited last fall, but sadly I think (I'm not 100% sure) this is only a download for now (AGH!).

But Westerberg has said an album is possible. Aside from Paul and Tommy (still in Guns N Roses), I don't know who else is in the band. I also believe this is all-covers. I might cave and make this my first ever download purchase-but I refuse to commit to that just yet because it is a covers only EP after all.

There will be a vinyl edition in April.

Four of the songs are by Westerberg and Stinson, with a replacement guitarist and drummer filling out the group. The fifth song is a Chris Mars one-man-band solo production. Mars doesn't play drums much anymore and didn't feel comfortable trying to drum with other musicians outside his home studio, so he declined to record with the guys.

The reason it is a covers EP is because of the spontaneous way it evolved. The original plan was for them to just do a single with a Slim Dunlap song on each side, one by Westerberg/Stinson and the other by Mars. But Westerberg and Stinson were having so much fun at the session that after they recorded the Slim song, they just kept going and did a few covers they already knew.

I just took a listen to the samples at amazon. Nothing transcendent, but decent performances that sound spontaneous and evoke the old Mats spirit. Even if it sucked though I'd still be buying it. Every fan should purchase this in at least one form given the worthy cause it's for.

The album cover, the eyes, looks to be a Chris Mars painting. That's his style (as seen on his post Replacements albums). Looking forward to this. Loved that band.

Hope I get some Amazon credits because I'm not paying for a download.

Not sure if this should be in a separate thread, but New West released a 2-CD compilation on 11-11-13 of the vinyl singles (plus some unreleased songs) for a really good price:

Songs For Slim: Rockin' Here Tonight - A Benefit Compilation For Slim Dunlap (2CD)

Image

Amazon USA: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FA1DEUM/?tag=imwan-20

Includes interpretations of Dunlap songs by the likes of The Replacements, Soul Asylum, Steve Earle, Tommy Keene, Lucinda Williams, Joe Henry, Frank Black, Peter Holsapple, Jeff Tweedy, John Doe, Jakob Dylan, and many other talented folks. Highly recommended, and for a good cause.

NOTE: The 2-CD compilation only includes the first two songs from the original "Songs for Slim" ep: "Busted Up" by the re-formed Replacements, and "Radio Hook Word Hit" by Chris Mars, both tunes originally by Slim Dunlap. The other three songs on the original ep were covers of non-Dunlap songs performed by The Replacements, and are only available on the original vinyl single, or download, AFAIK.
