Jimmy Webb – Still Within The Sound Of My Voice (eOne Music)
ElmoreMagazine.com | July 30th, 2013 by Elmore Staff

Jimmy Webb writes hits, and the many stars who owe their gold records to him—or would like to—showed up in the studio to pay their respects and lend their talents to Webb’s collection of longing-filled blockbusters. There are 14 songs and 14 duets on this second CD of classics from the master, and every one is a gem.

Old friends Carly Simon, Joe Cocker, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Art Garfunkel and Kris Kristofferson make appearances, and Webb also enlists Keith Urban and Lyle Lovett to help him rework these hits to keep them as fresh and lovely as they were the day they were written. Who but Brian Wilson could have done justice to the trippy, L.A.-inspired “MacArthur Park”? Only Wilson could make lyrics like “someone left the cake out in the rain” sound reasonable. Oh no! It’s a tragedy; we may never have that recipe again!

The title tune, beautifully harmonized by Webb and British pop star Rumer, comes with a personal story. I truly love this song and once sent it to a boyfriend who spent half his life on the road. He didn’t get it. Who could stay with a man like that? Not me.

Oh, I see-it's the writer's attempt at a hipper than thou kind of humour. "L.A. inspired"? I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean as the park is a real place and thus was the inspiration for the song. Webb has stated on numerous occasions that there is nothing metaphorical about the cake- cakes were often left in the park after gatherings. If the lyrics are so lame, how can anyone make them sound "reasonable".

That aside, I'm really looking forward to the new recording and the album as a whole.

Lyle Lovett duet streaming at Wall Street Journal blog:

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2013/06/ ... -premiere/

"Jimmy Webb has penned hits for the likes of Glen Campbell, Donna Summer and the 5th Dimension, among plenty of others. He revisits 14 of his classic tracks with help from a slew of special guests, many of whom have recorded his songs, on “Still Within the Sound of My Voice,” a new album due in September.

David Crosby, Brian Wilson, Carly Simon, Keith Urban, Art Garfunkel, Joe Cocker, Kris Kristofferson and Lyle Lovett are among Webb’s collaborators on “Still Within the Sound of My Voice,” the follow-up to Webb’s 2010 release “Just Across the River.” Speakeasy today exclusively premieres Webb’s duet with Lovett on “Sleeping in the Daytime,” which first appeared on Webb’s 1970 album “Words and Music.” The songwriter told Speakeasy, “I would venture to say it was one of the first environmental protest songs ever written.”

Webb said that he and Lovett took their time in the studio, swapping tales of west Texas (where Webb grew up) and blending their voices until each was pleased with the result.

“What eventually emerged was something that I am extraordinarily proud of,” Webb said. “I admire Lyle; you can’t know him without wanting him to like you, without wanting to be in his good graces. He has carved a singular career on the edge of pure country, which is a very difficult place to perch.”

Recording in Nashville, “Still Within the Sound of My Voice” is due Sept. 10 on eOne Music. See the full track listing below. Webb performs Saturday at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles to mark the 45th anniversary of his song by the same name.

1. Sleeping in the Daytime ft. Lyle Lovett
2. Easy for You to Say ft. Carly Simon
3. Elvis and Me ft. The Jordanaires

5. Still Within the Sound of My Voice ft. Rumer

10. Rider from Nowhere ft. America
11. Honey Come Back ft. Kris Kristofferson
12. Adios ft. Amy Grant
13. MacArthur Park ft. Brian Wilson
14. Shattered ft. Art Garfunkel"

I'd like the Crosby & Nash just cause I collect DC. That's about it here for me.
