Neil Young recently launched his tour in Albuquerque, but rather than filling his set with the songs from the ‘Americana’ album that he released back in June, the singer and his band Crazy Horse went heavy with even newer, previously material. Well, we may get to hear the studio versions soon.
Rolling Stone reports that guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro revealed that the singer’s upcoming album, his second with his sporadic but longtime backing band Crazy Horse this year, is titled ‘Psychedelic Pill.’ The song shares its moniker with one of the songs on the album.
Sampedro says, “That song began in the studio when Neil sat down at the piano and began playing chords. Ralph [Molina] was on drums and he started this beat on the snare and wouldn’t stop for nearly an hour. We stood up and played it and realized it was a great song. We just haven’t performed it that great yet, but we’re getting more comfortable every night.”
Sampedro reveals another track that has the band excited from the new album is ‘Walk Like a Giant.’ “We played it one time and the next thing we know we’re doing overdubs. Then he played it for us. The playback blew our minds. We had no idea we’d done something that big. I imagine it’s about Earth being destroyed by this giant, and we’re screening the planet for survivors and s—. I have all these images going through my head. It’s really crazy.”
Fans can look for ‘Psychedelic Pill’ to arrive in October. We will of course share any new information as it comes in. Young and Crazy Horse will continue on their tour through December.

The tour...and these new songs started 8/3 with a few west coast / mountain dates that ended 8/10. Save for 2 shows in September, the big part of the tour doesn't start again until 10/3.
Perhaps the long break was scheduled in part to go into the recording studio?

It has GOT to be better than Americrapna. I played that again about 2 nights ago, & my opinion of it lowered significantly. But than I don't like Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger & Pearl Jam bores me these days..........

"americana" is a novelty record at best. i doubt i will ever put it on to listen to all the way through again.
"oh, susannah" is the only thing i may ever even put on a comp.

If the setlists are correct, the only song he's been playing from Americana is "Jesus' Chariot".....and not even every night..........he must think alot of the record
I already have 4 copies of Americana.....the one I bought, and then I got a free copy with every ticket bought for his upcoming shows.
NEW CRAZY HORSE ALBUM IN OCTOBER August 24, 2012 Psychedelic Pill will be released in October. It was recorded right after Americana at Audio Casa Blanca. A double-CD and triple-vinyl will be released because of the lengths of many of the songs, some of which were previewed in Crazy Horse's live performances earlier this month. In the spirit of Americana's release, full length videos for each of the songs will be available and previewed. A recommended high resolution 24/192 full fidelity version of the album Psychedelic Pill will be released on Blu-ray and will include all the videos. The low resolution iTunes downloads will also be accompanied by videos. Thanks for listening.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Reveal Album Release Date, Tracklist
Neil Young and Crazy Horse have given Psychedelic Pill, their second album of 2012, an official release date of October 30th.
With a handful of tracks passing the 15-minute barrier, and opener "Driftin' Back" clocking in at a whopping 27 minutes and 36 seconds, the followup to their folk covers record Americana will be available in double-CD and triple-LP formats. Check out the full tracklist below.
"It's us jamming and having lots of fun," Crazy Horse guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro told Rolling Stone earlier this summer. "I think that [former Crazy Horse producer] David Briggs would be proud of it . . . Once he was gone, I felt like we lost our compass a bit. We had the sound and we had the big machine, and we could play anything and play pretty good, but we weren't putting any great records together. I mean, Broken Arrow was OK. It wasn't like Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or Rust Never Sleeps or Ragged Glory."
Produced by Neil Young with John Hanlon and Mark Humphreys, Psychedelic Pill is the first album of original material by the full line-up of Neil Young and Crazy Horse since Broken Arrow in 1996 – though the band (minus Poncho) did back Young on his 2003 rock opera Greendale.
The band resumes their 2012 tour on October 3rd in Windsor, Ontario. It wraps up December 4th in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Track list:
Disc One: 1) Driftin' Back (27:36) 2) Psychedelic Pill (3:26) 3) Ramada Inn (16:49) 4) Born in Ontario (3:49)
Disc Two: 1) Twisted Road (3:28) 2) She's Always Dancing (8:33) 3) For the Love of Man (4:13) 4) Walk Like a Giant (16:27) Bonus Track: 5) Psychedelic Pill (Alternate Mix)

Bump: Amazon is now showing a new cover image (updated in the first post) which is different from the provisional artwork that accompanied the Rolling Stone article above.

They're also only showing cd & a drastically overpriced vinyl set. NY pretty much always does dvd or blu as an option these days so I suspect there will be more to come.

The price is alot better ($12.99), but it's now listed as a single disc......hopefully a typo.
I've put this link in the first post now. The 2-CD version has completely vanished, and the single CD apparently will contain the entire album.
ICErs who pre-ordered the 2-CD set from the original listing should check their Amazon accounts. It might be necessary to pre-order the 1-CD edition, if Amazon hasn't automatically switched previous orders to the new version.
