Five years after they reunited at the O2 Arena in London, millions of Led Zeppelin‘s fans who didn’t get to see the historic show may soon be able to enjoy the set (legally) for the first time, as a double DVD, double CD package will reportedly be out by Christmas.
‘That Metal Show’ co-hosts Eddie Trunk and Jim Florentine have both recently publicly alluded to something big coming from the Zeppelin camp this holiday season, and now we may know what it is. A report on Belgian site rtbf.be (via FindingZoso) claims ‘Led Zeppelin: Live at London’s O2 Arena’ will be released in November. Tickets for the one-night only show were more valuable than gold, with millions hoping to land one of just 18,000 seats inside the arena. There’s been rumors of a commercial release for years, with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones admitting in 2008 that they weren’t in a hurry to put something out. ”It was a special occasion you know and we really wanted that just to be it really,” Jones said (quote via Led-Zeppelin.org). A release seemed all but certain early in 2011. Page, Robert Plant, Jones and John Bonham’s son Jason opened the Dec. 10 show with ‘Good Times, Bad Times’ and spent two hours playing hits. ‘Black Dog,’ ‘Dazed and Confused’ and ‘Stairway to Heaven’ were highlights with the band not shying away from the longer, more difficult tunes. They closed the show with ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Rock and Roll’ as an encore. Fan and critical reviews were overwhelmingly positive. The show was arranged to raise money for the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund. Ertegun was the founder of Atlantic Records. “We did it, Ahmet,” Plant said after singing ‘Stairway to Heaven” (quote via the BBC).

Oh boy! This is news I've been waiting for ever since this event happened back on December 10, 2007. I've stayed away from the boots, but I've seen clips and the reunion gig was so surprisingly great I could not believe it was never released! But I did read Jimmy had been working on it for several years, so hopefully this is true. Page played unbelievable and Plant sounded as good as he could which was very good and Jones and Jason Bonham-well, what a rhythm section!

Whole Lotta Love Rock and Roll I have a hard time seeing where this would necessitate 2 DVDs

Well, it's about time...yet I'm still surprised they agreed to release this (especially Jimmy). I have an okay-quality audio boot of the show and they sounded excellent, but I can't wait to hear how good it sounds with improved sonic clarity. Plus, I've never seen any footage, so I'm very excited about the DVDs.

I saw the Jason Bonham LZ tribute show last year and was very disappointed, not just in the band (and the sound at the venue), but also at Jason's drumming. At times he seemed to be going through the motions, and his playing seemed a bit slow & plodding. This was especially surprising considering how good his playing was at the LZ reunion show (based on the boot I heard), but maybe everything since then has been a bit of a letdown for him. After playing with Jimmy, Robert & John Paul in front of you, it must be difficult to summon the same energy & enthusiasm for the same songs with other musicians, no matter how good they may be. Looking forward to hearing how good he actually was at this show without the booming bootleg sound quality.

Damn. I bought a boot of this a couple of months ago. Oh well. It didn't cost all that much and I'm sure the legit release will sound better, especially since I see that my discs have cracks in them.
Here are the timings on my boot. This would fit on one DVD.
Intro - 1:55 Good Times, Bad Times - 3:11 Ramble On - 5:43 Black Dog - 6:06 In My Time of Dying - 12:09 For Your Life - 6:55 Trampled Under Foot - 7:00 Nobody's Fault But Mine - 7:12 No Quarter - 9:27 Since I've Been Loving You - 8:02 Dazed and Confused - 12:46 Stairway to Heaven - 8:49 The Song Remains The Same - 6:59 Misty Mountain Hop - 5:50 Kashmir - 12:37
Whole Lotta Love - 10:36 Rock and Roll - 5:29

It's obvious a 2nd DVD would have bonus material-most likely interviews and a doc. The show itself was around 130 minutes. I'll still believe this baby when I have it in my clutches.

About time! I'm guessing the second DVD might be a documentary or something... Invisible Pedestrian wrote: I'll still believe this baby when I have it in my clutches. No kidding--I still can't believe that the show itself actually happened.

The boot is pretty high quality, but I will be purchasing it also (at least the cd. I really don't need any more LZ DVD's)

They have now posted the word FIVE on their Facebook page in that runes-type style, so I have no idea what that means. Of course, there is now a ton of speculation which is the idea. Could be an album of outtakes, a tour, this live release-a tribute to Sesame Street, I don't know! I hope whatever it is does not mean this live album isn't happening, which is why I said I'd believe it when I see it as far as having it went!

While a release like this would be good, I'd rather see a vintage show from the vaults released.
