I've neither read the books nor seen the movie, but from what I've read this is a very different album from what some might have expected. Except for the Glen Hansard and Kid Cudi tracks it's a laid-back folksy affair. There's a definite Appalachian/country feel to it. I think it's a terrific collection. I especially like the ...Chocolate Drops and Taylor Swift cuts. A pleasant surprise.

Are these songs heard in the movie?
I think only the Taylor Swift cut is actually in the movie.
I saw the movie this past weekend. The Taylor Swift song, "Safe and Sound," featuring the Civil Wars, plays during some of the closing credits. It's Appalachian feel mentioned earlier comes out of the book. The story is set in the future, and the main character, played by Jennifer Lawrence in the film, is from the Appalachian and coal mining region in what used to be the U.S. Preceding this track over the closing credits is, I think, the Decemberists track, "Abraham's Daughter."
