Stephen Burns & The Scruffs Return to Work with Adam Hill and Lucas Peterson

Image
In the picture, L to R: Jody Stephens, Stephen Burns, Bobby Kildea, Mark Rodgers, and engineer Adam Hill.

Stephen Burns of The Scruffs traveled to Ardent this winter to produce a new record with engineer Adam Hill and assistant Lucas Peterson.

Burns and The Scruffs have a long history with Ardent, having recorded their first two records here in the late 1970′s with John Fry engineering, and have been back twice within the last four years to mix two new ones (2007′s Pop Manifesto and 2010′s Conquest). Adam Hill was the assistant engineer on both those mixes and must have made a good impression as this time around, Burns put him in the engineer’s seat. This project also marks the first time Burns and The Scruffs would be tracking AND mixing at Ardent in more than 30 years.

Burns, the band’s primary creative force, wrote the songs and handled guitar/keys/vocals. Bobby Kildea of Belle & Sebastian provided bass/guitar/percussion and vocals. Mark Rodgers (who’s been a member for 10 years) joined in once again on drums and percussion. Guests included Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Memphis players Jake and Toby Vest (The Third Man, The Bulletproof Vests), John Whittemore (Neighborhood Texture Jam, The 1-4-5′s), and Al Gamble (The City Champs).

They also enlisted the help of some vintage Ardent gear, including the Spectra Sonics rack (channel strips pulled directly from the console that was used at Ardent’s National Street location and re-seated in a custom rack by technical director Chris Jackson), the Fairchild 660 and 670 (vintage tube compression), and Chris Bell’s mid-60′s Gibson ES-330.

All tracks were cut to ProTools, but keeper tracks were bounced to analogue before mixing. Naturally.

Well, I can tell you some additional facts...

The record will be called "Kill, Kill." Peter Buck appears on one track, "She's A Killer." Release date still to be confirmed at today, hopefully soon, but final product and artwork is complete, and the CD will be released in a gatefold sleeve, 1 CD in Stereo, 1 CD in Mono.

It was mastered at Abbey Road studios in London by Stephen and I in February this year, with Alex Wharton engineering (a very nice bloke, a fantastic engineer too). I really like it - think it is a really strong record from top to bottom and the production and mastering quality is excellent.

Adam and Lucas did a fine job on engineering and mixing the recording with Stephen at Ardent and the Ardent experience was, as ever, excellent during tracking in November 2010. My copies of final product are en route to Scotland, either via USPS or the Royal Mail as I write so fingers crossed I'll have them in the next week.

Bit of an update on this and some LIVE dates.

Scheduled release date is on or around 1st March. A limited number of copies are available right now, through http://www.lovemusicglasgow.com, ask for Sandy McLean.

The Scruffs will be appearing at South By South West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. Time, date and venue to be confirmed but the music portion of this festival runs March 13th - 18th.

Looking at other dates probably 9th or 10th in Memphis and again 24th/25th in Memphis; the later date will probably be a launch party if you will, all welcome. There is the possibility of dates in Little Rock and Nashville; time will tell.

I'd forgotten about that video...

We're confirmed , for SXSW, as playing at the Ten Oak Lounge, Austin TX, on Saturday March 17th. On stage 7.30 - 8pm I think, but anyone interested can contact the venue to confirm nearer the time. Also, at the Hi Tone, in Memphis, Sunday 25th March, time tbc.

That is good news, Mark. Can't wait to hear the new record.

Will The Scruffs be playing live in Scotland or Europe at any point? That would be fantastic!

Who knows ? I'm working on it... The last Scruffs Europe gig was 9 years ago in London, so it's well overdue. I'll speak with Stephen direct on this when I land in Memphis in a couple of weeks.
