From Antimusic.com:
The speculation around the mysterious new Metallica project has now ended with the surprising news that the metal veterans have just completed recording a new album with rock legend Lou Reed. Here is what the band had to say:
A few months ago, our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record." While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.
Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months.
In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.
A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together.

This is one of the only ways I would have a Metallica album in my collection.....I can't stand them, but love Lou.
This should be a good combination.

This should be a good combination. I guess Lou can stand Metallica, eh?

While not much of a Metallica fan (the only one I own is the black album & haven't played it in years) I'll admit to a bit of interest/curiosity on this one.

This should be a good combination. Ironically I feel the same way but in reverse. I don't dislike Lou Reed but I've never wanted to buy his albums. Course that might still be the case, since I haven't bought any Metallica albums in years too. I have every album from Kill Em All to Load, but after that record I stopped.

My love of Lou is more the Velvet Underground, which is in my top 10 favorite bands/artists. Solo, I mostly only have his bigger albums as Transformer, Berlin and New York (and Metal Machine Music) which I also all love.
I guess I do have 1 Metallica track in my collection form the Ray Davies See My Friends tribute/duet album.

That too....sometimes I just list studio records. Have that, the companion Lou Reed Live and live recording of Berlin from a few years ago.

One only had to look at the joy they experienced playing together at the 25th anniversary bash to know something more would come of it. As long as it isn't a vanity project like "S&M" I'm in.

I own 3 Metallica albums and around 30 Lou/Velvets albums, so you know where I stand. I'm very curious to hear this, as it's basically a Lou album backed by Metallica and it could be very good. I'd love to know how Lou and Lars got along in the studio as they're both huge control freaks. My main problem is Lars, his drumming is too busy and he doesn't have the light touch Lou can require. He also doesn't have a clue as to how to get a good drum/bass sound. Hopefully, Lou had a big say in production, can't believe he went into this and gave up control. But he can always mix out what he doesn't like after everyone else has gone home.

Metallica collab is ‘perfection’ says Reed Lou insists album with thrash giants is “marriage made in heaven” – they say it’s made them a better band
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Happy marriage: Reed and Metallica Lou Reed insists his collaboration with Metallica is “a marriage made in heaven” – and the thrash giants claim the experience has made them a better band.
Fans were astonished yesterday when the “secret project” guitarist Kirk Hammett had alluded to turned out to be a ten-track album made with art-rock icon Reed, 69.
But amid accusations of the work being a “rich man’s folly” and time wasted when they could have recorded a follow-up to 2008′s Death Magnetic, drummer Lars Ulrich insists it’s a valuable project.
He tells Rolling Stone: “I don’t think we’ve ever felt this free. There’s nothing that’s totally outside the boundary for us. The strength of us with Lou makes us feel like we can’t land in a wrong place.”
Reed met Metallica at the 25th anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concet in New York in 2009, when they backed him for two tracks. He says: “I knew from the first day we played together: ‘Oh, man, this is perfection right in front of me. It’s a marriage made in heaven.
“They’re bringing Metallica with all that power. And because they’re pretty sophisticated, wherever I go they’re still with me.”
But guitarist Hammett denies the band have been cast in the role of Reed’s backing band: “It doesn’t feel like that. It feels like we’re a different band in a situation we’ve never been before – and it’s making us a better band.”
Two track names have been revealed: Pumping Blood and Mistress Dread. Frontman James Hetfield reports: “Lars and I listened to Lou’s demos and it was like, ‘Wow, this is very different.’ It was scary at first because the music was so open. Then I thought, ‘This could go anywhere.’
“I told Lou I want to be there when people hear it. I want to see their faces.”

It's a collaboration, so none of that matters.

Really, none of it matters. It will rise or fall based on the music, and I'm really hoping it's as good as all the participants are saying it is. But I've been around long enough to know that there's hype (gotta sell the product) and reality. On paper, it sounds like an interesting collaboration, so I'm hoping for the best.

Well, if Reed's gonna do this, then I wanted Elder II: War Of The Gods that was promised to me personally by Gene $immons 30 years ago! Reed should finish his KISS side projects first!

I am such a huge fan of Lou and the VU that this makes me want to listen to Metallica to understand what he hears. I don't think I've ever been aware of hearing a moment of Metallica but this is tremendously exciting.

I like the fact that he's teamed with a band that doesn't seem to be a perfect fit. It would have been easy to hook up with someone who was Velvets influenced, or is higher up on the hipness/Pitchfork approved hierarchy of bands, or maybe dig Kevin Shields out of hibernation. But you kind of know what those collabs would sound like. This is different, and a risk for both Metallica and Reed.
