KEVIN AYERS RETURNS FROM WILDERNESS WITH NEW LP

Kevin Ayers is back from the wilderness after fifteen years with a brand new album. The genius songwriter/guitarist has teamed up with many of the musicians he has inspired over the years to make ‘The Unfairground’.

Ayers co-founded Soft Machine with Robert Wyatt, David Allen and Mike Rattlegate in 1966 and later flourished in his solo career working with the likes of Syd Barrett, Mike Oldfield and John Cale.

'The Unfairground' was recorded with the help of several artists, including Hugh Hopper, Teenage Fanclub, The Ladybug Transistor, Candie Payne, Bridget St. John, Neutral Milk Hotel, Phil Manzanera, Architecture in Helsinki, Robbie McIntosh, Francis Reader (Trash Can Sinatras) and Euros Childs (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci).

Kevin Ayers has been all around the globe, recording the album between 2006 and 2007. The bands have recorded in Arizona, Brooklyn, New York, London and Glasgow and will be ready to release the album in the UK by September 10, 2007 through Lomax Recordings.

From Scotland's Sunday Mail:

Rock legend thanks his new Fanclub

ROCK legend Kevin Ayers has said a big thank you to one of our best loved bands - Teenage Fanclub.

The psychedelic music pioneer reckons the Scots helped relaunch his ailing career.

Kevin travelled to Yip Jump Studios in Glasgow to record tracks for The Unfairground - his first album in 15 years.

He worked with Dave McGowan and Norman Blake of the Fanclub and their mates The Trashcan Sinatras - both big fans of his music.

Kevin said: "The reason I didn't release a record for 15 years was simple - lack of inspiration.

"I didn't know if I'd make another album."

In 1966, Kevin founded Soft Machine with Robert Wyatt. He then worked with Pink Floyd legend Syd Barrett, ex-Velvet Underground star John Cale and Mike Oldfield.

His innovative sound was a major influence on David Bowie and Roxy Music.

But the singer had no idea the Fanclub were big fans too. He'd never even heard their music.

He said: "I live in a little village in France and don't listen to pop music. I had no idea they were so influential.

"It was a nice surprise to discover they liked my music. I listened to a their songs and was impressed. I was amazed to hear they wanted to work with me."

Now, Kevin would love to perform with the Fanclub in Glasgow.

He said: "Working with them made me really raise my game.

"They were a pleasure to perform with."

Thank you for the info..... I'm a big KA/Canterbury fan. Robert Wyatt's new one is coming out, too.
