After 37 years they've finally recorded an album of all new material. The band consists of David Thomas, the rhythm section of Craig Bell and Steve Mehlman, and the guitar duo of Cheetah Chrome and Richard Lloyd, same band that recorded Rocket Redux. Not heavy on guitar pyro, but Lloyd/Chrome bite and snarl with riffs spiraling off into terse solos (mostly Lloyd). David Thomas has lost whatever voice he had, but the shreds of it are very good at conveying that menacing whimsy that he's so good at. This is an excellent album, very dark and threatening, but it just rocks like anything (special kudos to Bell/Mehlman), and has a couple of moments of true pop grace. Never saw this one coming but happy it did. Big cheers for the AARP set.
