Seal to cover Marvin Gaye, Al Green on new album

Seal is set to cover a host of classic song songs on his forthcoming album, ‘Soul 2’.

The follow up to 2008’s ‘Soul’, will include the singer’s own versions of ‘What’s Goin’ On’ by Marvin Gaye - pictured below - and ‘Let’s Stay Together’ by Al Green - pictured above. He will also take on ‘Wishing On A Star’ by Rose Royce and ‘Love T.K.O.’ by Teddy Pendergrass, who died last year. The album is out November 21 in the UK (January 31 in the US).

Produced by Trevor Horn and David Foster, the album was recorded in London and Los Angeles. Of the album, Seal says: "The songs on ‘Soul 2’ are a natural evolution in the arc of soul music from the songs on the first ‘Soul’ album and they are all-time classics."

The ‘Soul 2’ tracklisting is:

‘Wishing On A Star’ (Rose Royce)
‘Love T.K.O.’ (Teddy Pendergrass)
‘Ooh Baby Baby’ (The Miracles)
‘Let’s Stay Together’ (Al Green)
‘What’s Goin’ On’ (Marvin Gaye)
‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’ (Rose Royce)
‘Backstabbers’ (The O’Jays)
‘I’ll Be Around’ (The Spinners)
‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait’ (The Delfonics)
‘Lean On Me’ (Bill Withers)
‘Oh Girl’ (The Chi-Lites)

Seal could sing the phone book and I'd probably buy it. I'm actually looking forward to this.

Wow, do I ever miss the days when Seal was based in London and made interesting dance/rock/Euro-soul music with Trevor Horn. These covers albums are killing me.

His cover of "Let's Stay Together" is actually pretty damn good.

I agree-I loved the first 3 albums and since then it's been hit and mostly miss. But the first Soul was very classy and I'll get this one as well, but not with a whole lot of excitement. Sadly, Seal is going the Rod Stewart/Sting/Phil Collins route when I feel he has so much more to offer.

I'd RATHER he sing the phone book than most of the selections here that have been sung to death...

I think "Wishing On A Star" and "I’ll Be Around" are really good choices here; neither has been done to death and both seem ripe for rediscovery/reinterpretation.

Paul Weller had a big hit in the UK with "Wishing On A Star" just a few years ago:

It did so well that it regularly appears in his live setlist.

Beyonce put out a cover of "Wishing on a Star" last year as well.

I stand corrected on the Rose Royce covers (although I've heard neither of these, nor even heard of them until now).

Not done to death, but... Joan Osborne and Hall & Oates covered "I'll Be Around" not so long ago. "Wishing..." has been covered by the aforementioned Paul Weller, along with Randy Crawford and Elaine Paige, as well as several smooth jazz type covers...

My point is that these songs -- and I'm sure David Foster's boring production -- will make this a disappointment for me.

There are tons of other rarer soul songs that Seal could do, and THAT, I would enjoy! How about something from Teena Marie? Some Deniece Williams? Some Luther Vandross? Since I'm listening to several Etta James reissues recently, how about some old Etta soul chestnuts (and NOT "At Last)? Maybe James Brown? How about Marvin Gaye's "To Keep You Satisfied" (from the underrated "Here, My Dear...")? How about some early Smokey Robinson solo material ("Sweet Harmony", "Quiet Storm", or "Just My Soul Responding")? Bill Withers has an amazing catalogue of songs -- and not just the obvious ones. How about Soul II Soul's "Back To Life" -- that's never been remade as far as I know.

Beverley Knight recently released "Soul UK" and that was a terrific release, with lots of surprises!

To me, cover albums are like Hollywood needlessly remaking movies: they're largely unoriginal and boring, but they make money. I'll stick with the originals, thank you. I love Hall & Oates but did not care for their covers album at all. I figured if I was going to like a covers album, that would be the one. I didn't even care much for Bettye Lavette's. Love Joan Osborne and didn't care for hers either, but at least she had an interesting song list. You're not going to get any better than the Spinners version of "I'll Be Around." Did the sudden emergence of cover albums result from American Idol? Now you have Glee doing covers every week. No problem with an artist doing a cover or two on an album, but just covers is lazy and lazy doesn't translate to quality performances.
