Hiatt, a master lyricist and satirical storyteller, weaves hidden plot twists into fictional tales ranging in topics including redemption, relationships, growing older and surrendering, on his terms. The new record is musically rooted in acoustic blues, accentuated by Hiatt's soulful, gritty voice, which mirrors the gravity of his reflective lyrics.

For Terms Of My Surrender, Hiatt turned to his longtime guitarist Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin, Jack Ingram) to produce. Though Hiatt initially picked up an electric guitar on day one of recording, Lancio challenged him to play acoustic instead, which set the tone and mood for the whole process. Hiatt even plays harmonica on the album, which he hasn't done in several years. They recorded most of the album off the floor as if in a live setting, which was fitting since the band in the studio was Hiatt's exceptional touring band.

I saw him play a couple of these tunes in January. I can't wait for this one.

I got an early release of this at his show last night. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet but the couple of songs he played from it weren't bad.

Damn you Ron! I want mine now!

I've given this one listen, and my initial impression is that this is outstanding. He has accepted that his voice is growing deeper as he ages and writing and playing accordingly. On some of the songs he almost sounds like Tom Waits, without the affect. I'm sure this will be in heavy rotation this summer, along with the CSNY and upcoming Allman set.

Excellent album & his songwriting is as good as ever. His vocals fits the material to a T. Here's hoping he keeps his winning album streak going for a long time to come.
