Influential alternative rock icons Primus are back with their first album of brand new music since 1999's Antipap. The new album is entitled Green Naugahyde. Primus will be hitting the road in support of the new album - headlining their own shows, festivals (Hangout, Bonnaroo, All Good Festival) and playing legendary venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre on August 3rd with old friends The Flaming Lips.

Primus formed in the late '80s in Northern California, releasing their first album, Suck On This, in 1989. They signed to Caroline Records and released the now-classic Frizzle Fry in 1990. As part of the alternative rock explosion of the '90s, the band signed to Interscope and gave the world some of the biggest records of the decade, including Sailing The Seas Of Cheese, Pork Soda, Tales From The Punchbowl and The Brown Album, had several Billboard top 10 debuts, garnered a Grammy nomination and wrote the internationally loved and enduring theme song for 'South Park'.

As previously reported, Primus have been hard at work on their first studio album in more than a decade. In a post on the band’s website, Les Claypool and pals has said the record is nearly complete.

“For those of you that enjoyed the new song, ‘Last Salmon Man,’ that we played New Year’s, you’ll love the record because every song basically sounds exactly the same as that one,” Claypool joked in the post. “In fact, we just kept recording the same song over and over and I would just change a few of the lyrics around.”

Other than that clue, not much information about the sound of the new album could be gathered from Claypool’s post… unless you take him at his word about his devotion to Blue Oyster Cult.

“Every song is pretty much a variation of ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper,’” he wrote. “Everyone should buy two copies.”

Primus’ last studio album, Antipop, was released in 1999. Although the band haven’t recorded an album since, they’ve toured plenty – including 2010 dates with Wolfmother and Gogol Bordello.

Primus have set a September 13, 2011 release date for Green Naugahyde, their first studio album in 11 years.

The record was produced and engineered by Les Claypool in his personal studio, Rancho Relaxo, in Northern California, and features Claypool, long-time guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Jay Lane. Lane was in an early lineup of the band, and was also in Sausage, a 1994 reunion of the 1988 Primus lineup. Green Naugahyde expands on Primus' incomparable sound and also sees them bringing it into the next millennium. It is a cerebral and complex album that, like all of the band's output, is teeming with the band's signature blend of whimsy and underlying darkness.

Says Claypool, "If I were to look at all of our records, it seems like this is reminiscent of the early stuff. Obviously, with Jay there's a newness to it, but because he left the band right before we recorded our first record, his approach has an eerie harkening to the old Frizzle Fry days."

Like Primus' early output before they were international superstars, there was no earth-shattering catalyst behind Green Naugahyde other than the fact that all three of these musicians-and life-long collaborators who have worked together in various contexts-were getting the itch to experiment again. "There wasn't a lot of pre-thought to this as much as, 'Oh here we are, we should make a record,'" explains Claypool. "I've been playing with Jay quite a lot over the past 10 years and we have an intuitive bond, so for me he was a natural choice to be back in the mix," Claypool continues when asked how Lane came about rejoining the band after nearly two decades apart.

Claypool and LaLonde concur that Lane injected the band with a new energy that's evident in every note of Green Naugahyde. "We recorded this album in the same way we always do but having Jay there made this a whole different experience," explains LaLonde. "It definitely made it more collaborative and it made us excited about the album as we went along because we had so much fun in the process."

For the past 27 years, Primus have followed in the footsteps of boundary-pushing artists like Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd to create some of the most original and inventive music in existence. Green Naugahyde is a Primus record with all of the magic and mystery that phrase entails-and while no one can say for sure what the future will hold in store for the band, the most important thing is that the album exists and will inevitably hold its own in the band's impressive cannon of music.

"Even back in the old days people would always ask me, 'How long is Primus going to go on' and I would always say 'It's going to go until it's not fun anymore' and at the end of the day it just wasn't fun anymore so we stopped," Claypool explains. "I think giving it this much time to sit and ferment or whatever the hell you want to call it has made it fun again," he summarizes with a laugh.

After dates at Bonnaroo and Red Rocks with the Flaming Lips, Primus will hit the road in September with a major fall tour in support of Green Naugahyde.

Awesome-thanks man!
We were always told how ridiculous our lyrics in our band were and that we had to have liked Primus which was true (although we formed before they did). Now I see they have a song called "Eyes Of The Squirrel" and we have one on our upcoming CD called "Mr. Squirrel". Unbelievable! (To say the least, they have just a bit more talent than us by the way).
I love Primus-fond memories of college and I saw them live 7 times. Les-you rule, man.

Primus mainman Les Claypool has a lot to be happy about after reactiving his band with long-time “missing” drummer Jay Lane and coming to terms with the “funk” label sometimes attached to his band.

But he’s also experiencing difficult times in his personal life, and he’s poured them into new track Tragedy’s A-Comin’ – even though he’s done so with his trademark twisted approach.

Claypool tells MusicRadar: “Just that line says it all.

“There’s a lot of crazy shit in my life right now. My mom is fading away from us; she’s not going to be around much longer. My little nephew was diagnosed with leukaemia at only two months old. I have friends battling cancer.

“When I wrote that song I was just like, ‘Holy fucking hell.’ Whatever metaphor you want to use, into everyone’s life a little rain must fall. Well, there you go: ‘Tragedy’s A-Comin’.”

Claypool is pleased with the contrast in the track: “The funny thing is, the music to that song is very uplifting. There’s a lot of tragic figures in my music and Primus’ music. It’s just the way I exercise my demons.”

Drummer Lane left the band just a month before they recorded their first album. Previously he’d been a founding force behind their music and many fans have hoped he’d appear on a studio album. Finally he’s laid tracks for next week’s release, Green Naugahyde – and his return is one of the reasons Primus have also returned.

Claypool, who’s planning to auction a series of limited-edition basses to raise funds for his sick nephew, says: “I finished up the cycled for my last solo record and my manager and I were talking about what I should do next.

“He brought up the ‘P’ word, and I was like, ‘I don’t know.’ It just seemed like nostalgia. My manager kept pushing me, though, and gradually I came round.”

He calls Lane the “missing link” and explains: “Primus has always been the boat that he missed, and I think he’s always regretted it. It’s the fish that got away. When it came around again he was very excited and very prepared.”

The frontman reveals he’s now at peace with the word “funk” too.

“I was embarrassed for many years when people would call Primus a funk band,” he says. “I was very embarrassed to have that word applied to Primus because of all the people I respected.

“Bootsy, George Clinton, Larry Graham – I’d hate for them to buy one of our records, like, ‘Hey, I heard about this Primus band, they’re supposed to be funky.’ And then they’d listen to it and go, ‘What the fuck is this?’

“We were never funky. We’re funky now. With Jaysky in the band I feel that we’re way funkier than we ever were.”

Big Hassle sent over this good news for fans of Primus and South Park: Primus is pleased to announce that Green Naugahyde, its first studio album in 11 years, is now streaming exclusively on South Park's Facebook page, a week before release on September 13 on ATO Records/Prawn Songs.
Primus has a longstanding history with South Park, having written and recorded the Comedy Central show's theme song over 10 years ago. The album stream, which will be available for two weeks, is part of South Park's "Year of the Fan" promotion. You can listen to the album here

On August 30, 750 copies of Green Naugahyde were released in a batch of limited edition vinyl, available in independent record stores. The rubber-stamped and hand-numbered double LPs were pressed on green vinyl and featured a white sleeve.

Primus will also be heading out on a fall tour later this month. An Evening with Primus, featuring two full sets, begins on September 23rd in Boston, makes its way west, and ends on October 29th as part of the Oddity Faire at the Greek Theatre in Berkley, CA. Tickets are currently on sale.
