From antimusic.com:

John Hiatt will release his new album Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns, on August 2nd via New West Records.

As an added bonus, a deluxe version of the album will be made available, which will include a special behind-the-scenes DVD, The Making of Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns and 24/96 High Resolution audio mix of the entire album. As a preview to fans, the album's opening track and first single, "Damn This Town," is currently available to stream on Hiatt's Facebook page here.

Additionally, Hiatt will tour continuously in support of the record, including co-headling tours with Lyle Lovett and Big Head Todd and the Monsters.

Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns was recorded at Ben's Studio in Nashville and was produced by Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, The Black Crowes). In addition to Hiatt, the album features Kenneth Blevins on drums and percussion, Doug Lancio on electric guitars, mandolin and Hammertone and Patrick O'Hearn on bass guitar.

John Hiatt's career as a performer and songwriter has spanned more than 30 years and his work has been covered by everyone from Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, BB King, and Bonnie Raitt to Iggy Pop, Three Dog Night and The Neville Brothers. Hiatt began his solo career with the 1974 album Hangin' Around the Observatory. His landmark 1987 release Bring The Family received critical praise and was his first album to chart in the U.S. In 1993, Rhino Records released Love Gets Strange: The Songs of John Hiatt, which collected many of the cover versions of his songs that were recorded during the 80s and 90s. 2000's Crossing Muddy Waters was released to critical acclaim and was called "The most natural and relaxed John Hiatt album in years…" by All Music Guide. In 2008, Hiatt was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and was honored by the Americana Music Association with their prestigious "Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting Award."

The most recent Hiatt album I own is "Beneath This Gruff Exterior," but the last one I remember REALLY liking was "Little Head" and it's been years since I checked it out. I may need to revisit his catalog again soon. Are any of his post "...Gruff Exterior" albums worth seeking out?

Since the A&M days, I've gotten everything he's done but nothing has blown me away besides Tiki Bar and Crossing Muddy Waters, which I thought were as good as anything he's done. His work for Capitol left me cold though.

It's bizarre, to me, how he doesn't have a good album here and there, he has strings of good stuff that seems to go along with the label he's on. He was best on A&M and Vanguard, good on Geffen, and meh on everything else IMO.

The last one was okay, but it was the first time his voice got to me. It was like nails on a chalkboard and I found it unlistenable unfortunately. I need to give it another shot.

He's one of my favs, so I'm looking forward to the new one.

to quote neil young, "its all the same song".

all of his material pretty much has sounded the same lately, seriously you can't tell one album form the next.

"bring the family" set the bar so damn high, i guess i just expect more.

I just noticed that one of the song titles is "Train To Birmingham", which I assume is the legendary Hiatt tune written many years ago but never released on one of his studio albums. Kevin Welch does a phenomenal cover of the song, but it will be good to finally hear it sung by Hiatt himself

I share your opinion about Train To Birmingham. Strange that Hiatt waited around 20 years to record it and release it.....

Earl, I did some digging and found out why John finally recorded this song (and, turns out that it's somewhat more than 20 years old ...)

from an interview on Americansongwriter.com :

“Train To Birmingham” off Dirty Jeans is a great song. What can you tell us about that one?

I’ll tell you what, that’s the oldest song on the record. I wrote it when I was about 19. I’d been in Nashville a year — I came to Nashville when I was about 18, and I was writing for Tree Publishing Company, and I wasn’t a country songwriter by any stretch, but I was surrounded by those guys. Like Bobby Braddock, who wrote a lot of George Jones and Tammy Wynette hits. And Curly Putnam, who wrote “Green, Green Grass of Home,” and Red Lane, all these hit country songwriters of the day. I was writing my little folk songs, or whatever they hell they were, and I was trying to pick up the craft, at any rate, and I said, “Well how do you write a country song?” and one of them said one day, “Well, you gotta have a train song.” And I though well shit, I think I can write a song about a train.

And back in those days on Music Row, all the publishing companies were just in little houses, and the songwriters lived right next door. I lived in a little house with four or five other writers, and none of us were really country writers. One guy was from upstate New York trying to get some rock and roll thing going. Those were some real interesting times in Nashville, as it always is. But this one guy was from Birmingham and he kept going home every damn weekend like he couldn’t stand to be away. And I just though well shit, there’s my “Train To Birmingham.”

What made you decide to put “Train To Birmingham” on this record instead of one of your past records?

You know what, my wife really loves the song. And she’s been asking me to record it for years, and it kind of seemed right on this record. We were doing all of these songs about cities and different locations and going from the city and the country and back and forth. It’s our 25th wedding anniversary this year back in June, so I just thought I’d record this song for her.

In the rest of the interview, Hiatt professes a love for Procol Harum, and the poetry of Patti Smith, among other things. Here's the link:

Kevin Shirley? Ugh. Well at least it's not T-Bone Burnett, I guess.

My enthusiasm for this record just went down a few notches.

Listening now and, so far, it's very nice. In my opinion, recent records have suffered most from JH's trying to sing out of his range. I haven't understood why he would do it, and it has been frustrating. So far, it hasn't been an issue on this one.

And there are even strings on one of the songs. Who would have thunk it?

After one listen, I would say that this is his strongest record since Little Head. It's nice to hear NY Had Her Heart Broke on a record after hearing it for nearly ten years on boots. It's beautifully recorded.

Just listened to song samples. WOW! Sounds like classic Hiatt - like back to the MCA days. Really looking forward to picking this up. Wonder what the chances are of Best Buy or Wal-Mart even carrying it.

That's blasphemy Smiff! Little Head blew. ;D

Hush now son. :)

Little head was a good record. Not great, but good. In my opinion Walk On was his last great album. From 1987 through '95, he was at the top of his game. This album is pretty damn good though.

It's interesting you would say that. Little Head is generally considered his weakest effort in the last 20+ years and I don't even think it's in print anymore.

I think that his 2 earlier 90s albums, especially Walk On were good (actually Walk On was my favorite post Memphis album up to that point).

Muddy Waters and Tiki Bar were both pretty damn good and Gruff was decent. The few after that were so so to me.

Of course it's all a matter of personal preference, but I thought Little Head was much better than Tiki Bar. Gruff was good, but it came out the same day my son was born with serious medical issues, and I've never been able to separate the two. Of the post Memphis albums, these are my favorites in order of preference:
*Slow Turning
*Bring The Family
*Walk On
*Stolen Moments
*Little Head
*Master of Disaster
*Beneath This Gruff Exterior
*Crossing Muddy Waters

*Any good quality boot from the 80's or 90's (I have 25 or 30)

Smiff :Heck, as long as you like Hiatt, it's all good! :D On a serious note, really, really sorry to hear that about your son. We had some big scares the day my son was born and I constantly imagine an alternate universe where we weren't as lucky. My heart really goes out to you.

Joe, I'm in complete agreement with you. For me, he was darned near perfect through Pefectly Good Guitar and then IMO he got completely lost on the two Capitol records. For me, he returned to form with Tiki Bar and Crossing Muddy Waters and then fell apart again. Those two albums are two of my favorites.

You gotta hand it to the guy, he's got an amazing number of truly great albums. I don't know of too many other artists that you could say the same thing about.

- Slow Turning
- Bring The Family
- Stolen Moments
- Perfectly Good Guitar
- The Tiki Bar Is Open
- Crossing Muddy Waters

It's nice to know other people would add even more of his albums to this list as well.

From the little bit I've heard, the new one may go on this list too!

I appreciate the thoughts on my son. He'll have challenges for the rest of his life, but he's doing really well.

For people who aren't familiar with Hiatt's early records, I'd recommend them too. He wrote a lot of terrific songs when he was younger. If you can find Y'all Caught? I highly recommend picking it up. Plus, don't forget Little Village. His songs on there are terrific, particularly Don't Think About Her When You're Trying To Drive.

Geffen and MCA stuff yes, Columbia stuff is pretty meh. Thanks for reminding me about Little Village! What a great record. It's really a shame it didn't have legs.

So glad to hear your son is doing well!
