Neil Diamond and Rick Rubin team up for new album
Pair will collaborate for the third time

Neil Diamond is set to team up with producer Rick Rubin again, as they prepare to work on Diamond's new album.

The pair have reportedly arranged to meet on January 12 to discuss the concept of the album, the follow-up to this year's 'Home After Dark'.

"I told (Rubin) I want to start writing on the 12th," Diamond told Billboard. "He said, 'Why don't you not start writing and let's sit down and talk about what the concept is and what we're gonna do.' I said, 'Good idea,' so we'll meet on the 12th and go from there."

He also revealed that the pair will take a different approach to the album than they had on 'Home Before Dark' and their first collaboration '12 Songs'.

I'm not a fan of Diamond's MOR music from the 80s and 90s but so far I haven't been impressed by these minimalist albums with Rick Rubin either. They seem to have forgotten that one of the things that made Diamond's early hits so great were the arrangements. If they are really going to go in a different direction this time around I hope it is a step back to that classic sound.

Right on, Glenn. The Cash stuff worked because they were a return to what he started out doing before he got TOO orchestrated. The opposite is going on with Diamond, and it doesn't suit him at all, IMO.

Tom Jones' upcoming album with the Amy Winehouse-retro sound is a good example of returning to roots and playing to strengths. I've heard an advance, and it is very good.

That's because Tom Jones just keeps getting cooler and cooler.

Any fans of Neil, pre- or post-Rick Rubin, should definitely check out David Wild's new tome, HE IS, I SAY: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE NEIL DIAMOND. It's a breezy read, often wryly funny but always sincere...I loved it almost as much as I love Neil's work. As I'm among those who think the Rubin albums featured some of Diamond's strongest writing in many decades, I'm hoping their next collaboration proves as successful as the last two!

I really enjoyed the last two CD's. I had stopped buying his albums around 20 years ago, but these two got me interested in him again. I'm looking forward to thier next collaboration...

Count me in a someone who thinks the Rubin albums are very good. I had Neil's music forced upon me as a child by my Dad and many of those songs remain a guilty pleasure, and, hey, they're so well written and sung, so what? My college band even recorded a cover of "I Am, I Said" which came out well, though we did it with lots of guitars and tongue-in cheek.
A lot of Neil's music is drivel "Heartlight"-ewwww!), but these acoustic abums, especially 12 Songs were very good. I feel these songs suited his singing/writing very well, but it is time to try something else and not go the Santana route and keep milking something for years (although I disliked all those collaboration albums Santana did).

Is this with Rick Rubin again? I've really liked the last couple Neil Diamond albums.

Wonder if they'll have that nasty spyware embedded in the first pressings like last time.

I'm looking forward to this, especially if it's the rumored next Rick Rubin project with the same strong, revitalized songwriting from Neil.

But am I the only one who read that title and all of a sudden, could hear Neil covering Gilbert O'Sullivan? :o

Nothing's been confirmed by Columbia yet except for the title and the release date, but I'm assuming this is the next Rick Rubin-produced release that Diamond has been talking about for a couple of years.

I saw this on his Wikipedia entry:

According to posts on Neil's Twitter page, he is currently working on a new album, his third with Rick Rubin. He says he plans to play electric guitar on the album, a first for him. In 2009, Diamond stated that he prefers Gibson and Martin acoustic guitars and confirmed that recently he had been playing Gibson electric guitars.

So perhaps he is indeed covering Dokken as Chris said.

Cool!

(I really enjoyed those last two albums, but I'm glad to hear that Neil & Rick are trying some different things rather than going back to the well.)

Bump: added tracklisting to the first post — it's a covers album. Still no confirmation from Columbia that Rick Rubin is the producer.

Covers? But this is one of the best pop songwriters of the last fifty years! I guess that's what bugs me about the cover albums: the artist is just marking time. Part of the appeal of Neil, Phil Collins, Boz Scaggs, James Taylor, etc. is that they get to unveil their new compositions and let us know what's on their minds.
