Swans Confirm Details for My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky

Fans of gothic post-punk got an unexpected treat this year when Swans songwriter Michael Gira announced that he would be reforming the band for a new album. The group haven't issued any new material since 1996's Soundtracks for the Blind, but that's all going to change on September 21, when Swans release My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky.

The eight-song effort features a guest spot from eclectic folkster Devendra Banhart, who sang on the track "You Fucking People Make Me Sick," along with Gira's three-year-old daughter, Saoirse (who is clearly not a sheltered child).

The album will be released via Gira's Young God Records. As previously reported, this incarnation of Swans features Gira alongside co-founder Norman Westberg, previous members Christoph Hahn and Phil Puleo, as well as newcomers Chris Pravdica and Thor Harris.

According to a press release, "There’s a deliberate shift towards sonic intensity, relentless, maniacal rhythms and alternately abrasive and soaring waves of electric guitar." The album also features guest spots from ex-Swans drummer Bill Rieflin and Mercury Rev's Grasshopper, who plays a "swarm of mandolins."
