Glen Hansard's debut solo album announced DEBUT SOLO ALBUM - RHYTHM AND REPOSE Release date - 15 JUNE 2012 (Plateau) Over 20 years in the making, singer songwriter Glen Hansard will release his first solo album, Rhythm and Repose, on Plateau on June 15 (Anti Records for the rest of the world). Best known for his work with The Frames, The Swell Season and in the feature film Once, for which he won an Academy Award, Rhythm and Repose is Hansard’s first album of new material since his 2009 release Strict Joy with The Swell Season. Rhythm and Repose is a result of Hansard’s last year and a half of living in New York City. The album was recorded by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, Laurie Anderson) and produced by Thomas Bartlett (Doveman, The National, Antony and the Johnsons). The record features the musical talents of Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright) on bass, Ray Rizzo on drums, Nico Muhly and Rob Moose on strings (Bon Iver, Y Music), David Mansfield on slide guitar (Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Tour), Javier Mas (Leonard Cohen touring band) and half of Bruce Springsteen’s current horn section. Assisting on vocals are Cristin Milioti (Once, The Musical), Sam Amidon, Marketa Irglova and Aida Shahghasemi (Marketa Irglova touring band). In recent months Hansard has been seen in the documentary The Swell Season which has toured the film festival circuit this year, contributed two songs to the blockbuster soundtrack, The Hunger Games, and been active in the promotion of Once, The Musical which successfully opened on Broadway on March 18 to rave reviews, including the New York Times who explains, “what was always wonderful about ‘Once,’ its songs and its staging, has been magnified.” Hansard is celebrated as the principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for The Frames. He garnered a reputation as not only an unparalleled front man, but also for his dedicated following and his grounded, real-life songs. Whether he’s busking the streets of Dublin, where he got his start, or at the Hollywood Bowl, Hansard is always earnest and in-the-moment. Hansard is also one half of the acclaimed duo The Swell Season. In 2007, he and Czech songstress Markéta Irglová took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly” off the Once soundtrack. Hansard and Irglová continued the success of Once with the 2009 release Strict Joy under the namesake of The Swell Season. “Glen Hansard is a gifted, emotive frontman who sings as if he must, with a heart on his sleeve that is constantly throbbing.” —The New York Times Tracklist 1. You Will Become 2. Maybe Not Tonight 3. Talking with The Wolves 4. High Hope 5. Bird of Sorrow 6. The Storm, It's Coming 7. Love Don't Leave Me Waiting 8. What Are We Gonna Do 9. Races 10. Philander 11. Song of Good Hope http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007SPN5MA/?tag=imwan-20

Even though I'll always think of him as the guitar player from The Commitments, I got into The Swell Season in a big way a couple of years ago after seeing them on "Live From The Artists Den." Their harmonies are gorgeous, and at times his voice reminds me of Art Garfunkel. Never listened to The Frames, but I will check them out at some point. As for this solo album, I'll definitely buy a copy.

I am sure this will be a good one. The Frames are really one of the most passionate rock bands out there, although I'd expect this to be a much more folkier, laid back album, but it might not be that way. Hansard also has 2 songs on The Hunger Games soundtrack, so he seems to be doing very well right now. What I'd really like (and especially my wife since she is obsessed with him) is a new Frames record.

Pete, is there a particular Frames album that would be a good introduction? Since I got into The Swell Season (especially his vocals), I've been wanting to check out the Frames, but with at least half a dozen albums I don't know where to start.

If you're coming in via The Swell Season, I'd recommend starting with The Cost, since it shares a couple of songs (albeit in full-band versions) with the Once soundtrack. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000M06K98/?tag=imwan-20

Excerpted from a recent Rolling Stone profile... Quote: How did your new solo album come together? I took a year off from touring and moved to New York, and I ended up hanging out with my friend Thomas [Bartlett]. We jammed a couple of things one night at a session he runs called the Burgundy Stain Sessions, down at Le Poisson Rouge on Bleecker Street. I was kind of fooling around, and it sounded really good, so I said, "Why don't we go into the studio and try some things out?" It was very, very mellow. This was the easiest record I've ever made. It was all done in this really leisurely fashion – you know, it wasn't a tortured process. I didn't go off, have a nervous breakdown then write a bunch of songs. That's why I called the album Rhythm and Repose, because I'm beginning to believe that rest is as important as work.
Before you took that break, you'd been touring and recording with the Swell Season for a long time. It was pretty much five years. I mean, we were busy before the Oscars [in February 2008], but after that it got super busy. I don't want to throw names off too much, but I remember sitting next to Bruce Springsteen, and he put things in perspective for me so, so well. He said, "When you have success, you need to mark it, even if it's opening a beer or a bottle of champagne or going to dinner with your family or taking a holiday. If you don't mark your success, then the day your ship comes in might just be another day at the office." And I remember thinking, "Jesus, that's so true!" Because what happened after the Oscars was we just started working harder. I have to admit, it wasn't really until I took that time off that I dealt with the whole thing.
This is technically your first solo album. Was it any different making a record on your own? Yeah. It's a funny thing, you know. Making a record on your own, you wouldn't think it's that different, but Jesus, it's different! It's a big change. It sort of means that you're captaining every decision. Making this record was a real lesson to me. I'm actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
The first time I saw Jake Clemons, who plays some of the horn parts on the new album, was at a Swell Season show a few years ago. Have you seen him play with Bruce since he joined the E Street Band? I'm really happy for him, and I think it's the perfect path. I think that path was open to him all the way, and it was really up to Jake whether he wanted to fill it. He had to really work hard – I mean, not only does he have to be as good as Clarence, he has to be as good as people's memory of Clarence. And he knows that there's no way to do that. But he's just such a beautiful dude that I'm so overjoyed for him. I've seen a couple of Bruce's shows since he joined the band, and Jesus – he's really standing up there and he's really doing it. He's never overstating the mark. He's always humbly nodding to his uncle. I have to say, I think they're doing it really, really well.
Are you excited to be getting back on the road for this album? You know, I made this record all through last year, and it feels like it's been a really, really long run-up to its release. I'm really happy that it's finally coming out and that I get to do some gigs. I'll get to bring in some brass or some backing vocals, and I'm really enjoying sort of playing around with the lineup on this tour. It's exciting for me.

Ordered this for my wife and she got tickets to see him in Philly in September. Hansard is on Leno and Smiley tonight. What I've heard so far is very good, but I much prefer The Frames and wish they'd do a new album. Still, Hansard has more than proven himself with Swell Season and his solo music. An extremely talented guy.

Quote: I think the only way there will ever be Swell Season music is if me and Mar end up hanging out. Right now, this second, we're living very separate lives. You know, who knows? The thing is, we really enjoy playing together, so that gravity still exists. I hope in time we get together and make some music, but for me, I need to go back and concentrate on the Frames for a while. Those guys deserve a fucking medal, man. I've been off doing my thing for so long. The boys are coming on tour with me this time, so I'm really looking forward to being onstage and doing sound checks and just getting to hang out with the lads and make music.

Rich: I'm so sorry-I didn't see this earlier. Yes-I'd highly, highly recommend Fitzcarraldo which is their masterpiece. The Cost and For The Birds are also fantastic and Set List is an amazing live album with the crowd singing every note. I mean, really, the whole catalogue is wonderful. But Fitzcarraldo is the one and the title cut is incredible. The Salvo remasters are the way to go for the arly albums and the others are all recent and sound fine.
