Product Description
U.S. pressing includes bonus material. 2009 album from the British quartet. In This Light & On This Evening represents a significant step forward for the band following the huge successes of debut album The Back Room and the #1 follow up An End Has A Start. There have been many changes to life in Editors since An End Has A Start broke the band worldwide and established the Birmingham based four piece as one of the UK's most prominent bands of recent times. Bassist Russell Leech and guitarist Chris Urbanowicz are now resident in New York whilst singer Tom Smith has become a father. These changes added to the sense that In This Light And On This Evening was the start of a new chapter for Editors and the band came together in London for the recording sessions with producer Flood at the start of 2009 with a determination to push their sound into wholly new territory. Whilst all four members were keen to make a far more electronic record, they were determined to 'give the machines a human feel' in the words of lead singer Tom Smith.

3. Papillon

Editors to explore new 'ferocious' direction
Tom Smith says third record will be more powerful

March 11, 2008

Editors' frontman Tom Smith has revealed that the band will explore a new direction on the follow up to 2007's 'An End Has A Start'.

The Birmingham band have toured extensively since releasing their second album last June.

Speaking to BBC 6Music, Smith explained that the band will pursue a new, rawer sound.

He said: "I know there's an element to our band, a kind of power and ferociousness that we have when we play live that we haven't quite captured yet on record. Maybe things have been a little bit too smooth."

Despite that, Smith, who is going to be father for the first time later this year, admitted that new material won't be surfacing anytime soon.

He stated: "We haven't really started writing in any great depth for the record yet. The songs start with me, and I need time on my own really to sort that, and I haven't had that yet."

Editors reveal new literary inspiration at Oxegen
Band reveal source of new song as they play festival

July 11, 2008

Editors gave the Oxegen Festival an insight into their literature-inspired new song on the main stage this evening (July 11).

As with Editors performance at the recent Glastonbury festival, the band's set included new song 'No Sound But The Wind'.

However, speaking to NME.COM, frontman Tom Smith revealed that the track had been inspired by him imagining he was inside Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel 'The Road'.

The singer added that the version they played was probably not how the song will be recorded, but the band were keen to road-test some new material.

"It's good for our sanity and it's good for the audience's sanity to play something new as we've been on the road for a while," he explained. "It will probably have changed by the time we record it, but it gives people an idea of where it's going."

Playing in front of a big, passionate crowd, the set included the likes of 'All Sparks', 'You Are Fading' and closer 'Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors'.

Smith joked that Editors had been surprised how busy they were this summer, saying: "We were going to take it a bit calmer this summer, but it's ended up being a pretty hectic one with festivals."

"We just keep getting asked to play more festivals," dead-panned bassist Russell Leech. "So far we've just been doing weekends, which was actually quite gentle, but it's picking up now."

Editors played:

'Bones'
'The Racing Rats'
'An End Has A Start'
'Escape The Nest'
'All Sparks'
'No Sound But The Wind'
'Bullets'
'Blood'
'You Are Fading'
'Munich'
'The Weight Of The World'
'Fingers In The Factories'
'Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors'

I think their debut The Back Room is a little stronger, if you really get into them, they have TONS of b-sides, TONS.

Editors to record 'Terminator' influenced album in October
Band reveal next album plans in video interview

Editors have revealed that they are set to hit the studio with producer Jacknife Lee in October to begin recording the follow-up to their 2007 album, 'An End Has A Start'.

The band revealed the plan in an exclusive video interview with NME.COM, which you can watch by clicking below. They said that the album would be influenced by the Arnold Schwarzenegger film 'Terminator'.

"We've started writing differently and taking a new approach," said guitarist Christopher Urbanowicz. "I've started writing a lot of riffs on synthesisers and there's a lot more electronics, samples and drum loops on it. I keep referencing the 'Terminator' theme."

Editors reveal new album release date
Third effort set for September release

June 23, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/editors/45529

Editors have revealed that their forthcoming third album, 'In This Light And On This Evening', will be released on September 21 in the UK.

The album will be the follow-up to the Birmingham-band's 2007 Number One album 'The End Has A Start'.

In a statement frontman Tom Smith outlined that the album was heavily influenced by the city of London.

"I actually think it’s in every song," he said. "In the right time and place, in the right light and on the right evening, something you have seen 1,000 times before can still take your breath away."

Editors reveal sci-fi 'Blade Runner' influence for new album
Tom Smith speaks about 'In This Light And On This Evening'

July 10, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/editors/45951

Editors' Tom Smith has revealed that the band's forthcoming third album 'In This Light And On This Evening' is influenced by science fiction films such as 'Blade Runner'.

The synth-heavy album, out on September 21 in the UK, is set to include songs such as 'Papillon', 'Bricks And Mortar', 'Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool' and 'Like Treasure', with Smith explaining that he saw the record firmly rooted in the future.

"There's a sheen to the whole album," he claimed. "Some kind of backdrop to a scientific future - I don't want to say sci-fi because I think it gives the wrong impression – but you know how 'Blade Runner' looks beautiful, that civilisation on the brink of the edge? It feels the album could soundtrack that kind of thing."

The frontman also elaborated on a 'Terminator' film influence the band had previously hinted at.

"The 'Terminator' theme was the one that Chris [Urbanowicz, guitar] got really excited about," he said. "But it still feels human."

Editors: 'We're bored of people asking why we're dark'
But Tom Smith admits that new album is a rather noir affair

July 23, 2009
http://www.nme.com/news/editors/46285

Editors frontman Tom Smith has said that he is "bored" of people asking why the band make what he called "dark" music – although he has confirmed that forthcoming new album 'In This Light And On This Evening' is still a rather noir affair.

Writing on the band's official forum at Editorsofficial.com, the frontman said he wouldn't be trying to explain the band's outlook, perceived by some to be a bit bleak, any time soon.

"I am so fucking bored of people asking us why we're so 'dark'," he riled, "or worse questioning our integrity for being this way. This is how we do it, it excites us to express ourselves like this, to be honest we don't even understand what the alternative is and the alternatives we can imagine are too boring for us to even consider."

Writing about the album, which will be the band's third, he explained: "But this is still a dark record, a record that sings of no God, a record of broken love songs, a record where the filthy city [London] is so close you can smell it, taste it, a record of drunken violence, a record which has lost all trust in those in charge of our world.

"We must be four miserable people to make a record like this though right? I must be troubled to write words like these?

"No, absolutely not, dark is interesting, dark is exciting, dark can be funny, there’s real life in the dark, real life IS dark, when an album feels like this the fragments of hope and love that do occasionally shine through shine through ten times brighter than they would normally do so."

The album sees the band adopting heavy use of synthesisers, with Smith previously describing it as "some kind of backdrop to a scientific future".

The album, the follow-up to 2007's 'An End Has A Start', is out on September 21 in the UK.

Just picked this up. I liked their first album and I like this one, too. Imagine if Joy Division had survived and progressed into the naughties and you have some idea of what they sound like.
