Great news for Asia and Prog fans as the real, original lineup will do another album due around Spring 2010. I liked Phoenix-it was way too mellow, but Wetton and Palmer were coming off of heart procedures, so now they should be ready for a more dynamic album! Again, I did like Phoenix for the most part, but they can do better.
Mike Paxman did a killer job on the new Uriah Heep which had plenty of balls so he is a good producer choice.

From the band's website:

New Asia Studio Album Underway
Monday, 30 November 2009
The band is pleased to announce that they are currently recording their second reunion studio album and the follow-up to 2008's acclaimed "Phoenix" album. The legendary Roger Dean is onboard to design the cover artwork, while the renowned Mike Paxman is in the producer's chair. The album is due for completion in mid-February, so keep an eye on the official Asia website for more details!

Update: What an album cover! Roger Dean has outdone himself yet again! It may not be for everyone, but it's pretty cool to me and quite different from him.

Product Description
2010 album from the Prog Rock supergroup featuring all four original members: John Wetton (King Crimson/UK), Steve Howe (Yes), Carl Palmer (ELP) and Geoffrey Downes (The Buggles). While the band was an enormous success when they debuted in 1982, the original quartet fractured and Howe left in 1984. It wasn't until 2006 that the original foursome reconvened for a tour and then a new studio album in 2008. Two years on from that album, Omega finds all four members at a new creative peak. Features 12 tracks including 'Finger On The Trigger', 'I Believe', 'Holy War' and more. Frontiers.

01 Finger On The Trigger
02 Through My Veins
03 Holy War
04 Ever Yours
05 Listen Children
06 End Of The World
07 Light The Way
08 Emily (*)
09 Still The Same
10 There Was A Time
11 I Believe
12 Don't Wanna Lose You Now

(*) Bonus track first pressing in digipak

I'm surprised that this Asia reunion has had legs. I figured maybe they'd do one tour given how Howe and Wetton got along back in the day. Good to see they've buried the hatchet.

I liked Phoenix. "Alibis" is my favorite song on that album followed by "Parallel Worlds/Vortex/Déyà"

John:
Those songs are fantastic. "Alibis" sounds like vintage Journey and ""Parallel Worlds/Vortex/Déyà" sounds like vintage Yes. "Never Again" was damn good too-reminds me of the first Asia album. Lots of other good songs too-"Orchard Of Mines" being one of them.

For me "Phoenix" was alittle of a let down. I am a big Wetton led Asia fan but maybe what IP said in that they had personal (health) issues that may have played a part. I do need to replay "Phoenix" now that I do not have such high aspirations.

Interesting, just last week I found a used copy of Wetton/Downes "Icon" which I found to be very good, much better than I expected. I see now that Wetton/Downes have released 3 albums so far, Wow didn't realized this partnership was so prolific.

No problem here IP, I LOVE the cover art work! God Bless Roger Dean, he is still creating killer art!

Also like the news of a new producer, that was the issue I had with the last. We do miss Mike Stone though, May he Rest in Peace (or Rock in Heaven!).

From the official website:

Geoffrey Downes, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Wetton, the four original Asia members, reunited in 2006, twenty-three years after all four had last played together. The much publicised reunion resulted in highly successful world tours, a double live LP and DVD (entitled Fantasia: Live In Tokyo) and an acclaimed studio album Phoenix in 2008 which debuted at number 73 in the Billboard charts in the USA and entered the top 100 in several European countries.

Formed at the dawn of the MTV era, Asia’s first release was the best selling album in the world in 1982 and sat at the number 1 spot in the USA for 9 weeks, powered by the classic rock anthem, “Heat Of The Moment,” and four other radio hits. Asia’s 1983 sophomore album, Alpha, also went multi-platinum and enjoyed several hit singles, including the #1 smash, “Don’t Cry”. During the recording of its third disc, the band splintered, and by the 1990s, only Geoff Downes remained from the original line-up.

The reunion came to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band, but morphed itself into an ongoing endeavour. In 2008, they returned with the first new studio album, Phoenix, which had been strongly influenced by the fusion of talents and heritages that the band excited the music world with back in 1982. Omega shows a new renaissance for this amazing group of musicians, which seem to live up to a joie-de-vivre that stands the test of time.

Begun during the summer 2009, the writing and recording sessions of Omega, immediately showed inspiration and good feelings. “We were looking to create something different with Omega,” says keyboardist Geoff Downes. “Of course, the sound of the 4 band members of Asia will always have a certain hallmark when we play together. That's a given. But we approached the song writing with a mind to getting a degree of variety into these compositions. Hence, you will hear areas of textures where arguably we have never gone before.”

Adds lead vocalist/bassist/guitarist John Wetton: “Asia is an English prog-rock band with a pop edge, always has been, and hopefully always will be. Accessible, melodic, anthemic songs with great playing, luxuriating in a bed of lush orchestration, with lyrics that strike a sympathetic chord in even the most cynical heart. There you have it, Omega is a themed album in Asia's fine tradition, without the millstone of a concept.”

Steve Howe adds that “the whole recording process has been inspiring and rewarding, and I’m very excited about the result”. “I would say these are all strong individual songs” says drummer Carl Palmer. “It was a very smooth experience, and arguably one of our best records.”

For the first time since the debut album, ASIA worked with an outside producer, Mike Paxman (Uriah Heep, Status Quo) who managed to create a truly special sounding album with the highs, lows and lots of dynamics. He helped the band to put together a tapestry of sound, which demonstrates the rich strata of Asia's music. Paxman was able to achieve this through the songs which spun real stories of actual events and experiences in locations around the globe. “The songs always have a message, hopefully positive,” says Wetton. “My songs are almost always autobiographical, so there is hope and experience in there, too. The lyric will never leave you on a negative thought."
As with the most popular of ASIA releases, the cover art specifically designed for the project by acclaimed artist Roger Dean. The concept of the title (Omega), and the 'Year of the Tiger' referencing of the cover art underline the fact that this is real Asia. John Wetton explains: “The title 'Omega', as any fan of the band will tell you, is 'very Asia' (as is the album, by the way). It no more means 'final' than 'Alpha' means 'the first' (which it wasn't). It's a great sounding/looking word, and a bookend to 'Alpha'. In many ways, musically and conceptually, the two albums share commonality.”

“We are embarking on our European tour around the middle of April, then straight in to Japan for the middle of May” says Downes. “It's going to be fun working out the new setlist because obviously we have another album under our belt now with Omega.”

After touring Europe and Japan, ASIA will embark on a US tour late in the summer of 2010.

Omega will be released in the first pressing in digipak with one exclusive bonus track:
Finger on the Trigger; Through My Veins; Holy War; Ever Yours: Listen Children; End of the World; Light The Way; Emily (*); Still The Same; There Was a Time; I Believe; Don't Wanna Lose You Now.
(*) Bonus track first pressing in digipak.

P.S.
I listened to the sound clips and they sound very good, especially Wetton's voice. "Finger On The Trigger" rocked, but it had one of those lines where you go, "He didn't really just sing that lyric did he?" that made me wince.
But I look forward to the album and the tour.

NP, Pete, I've replaced it with the "normal" size cover image that's now up at Amazon. All the pre-order details for this album are in your first post now, too. And here's a photo of what Asia look like today:

Although Steve Howe looks like an old horror novelist, I think everyone looks great, especially since John Wetton and Carl Palmer went through heart procedures in 2007.

John Wetton looks a bit like a dockworker on stage these days. After the last show, we joking about him at some bar after the concert: "No, really, darling! I'm a rock star!"

When I saw them play in Milwaukee a couple years ago, I caught a flash of Wetton's navel during the final bows. He looks like he's lost some weight since then though.

Steve Howe could have been in the Lord Of The Rings movies -- without makeup.

Indeed, Hugo Weaving as Elrond looked a whole lot like Steve Howe, ca. mid-70s.

But a bunch of woodlands geeks can't play guitar, mandolin, banjo and just about every string instrument like Mr. Howe.
Maybe the nerds would best him on the zither.

Amazon both in the states and in the UK have the MP3 version listed here.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003B8VF16/?tag=imwan-21

You can listen to samples for all 12 songs. It sounds very promising. If you're into MP3s, you can get the UK version a few weeks earlier. You can also download the first song here:

http://www.aolradioblog.com/2010/03/02/ ... -download/

It's a definite improvement over the iCon version.

Frodo could use the ring to play guitar if he wanted to.

I see him as more of a drummer. Kinda like Animal from the Muppets but not as good or spastic.
