Review
Paste, February 2010
"The Desert of Shallow Effects is Kurosky's first solo effort since dissolving Beulah five years ago, and, happily, his singular gift for melody-rich pop hasn't deserted him."

All Music Guide, February 16, 2010
Kurosky has avoided the overt Brian Wilson-isms that might subsume a project like this in the hands of someone with a less singular vision. For, however much of an influence the classic `60s L.A. pop sound may be on Kurosky, The Desert of Shallow Effects never sounds anything less than completely contemporary.

Product Description
Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter and former Beulah frontman Miles Kurosky's debut solo album, The Desert of Shallow Effects, has been widely anticipated by fans since he quietly put the song "An Apple for an Apple" on his MySpace page in 2008, eliciting praise from Pitchfork and other influential blogs. Mostly recorded in San Francisco, with nearly 30 guest musicians, including many former bandmates, the new album continues the trajectory of greatness charted by Beulah's final albums, The Coast Is Never Clear and Yoko, while also blasting off for parts unknown. The result is what's sure to be one of the most talked-about indie-rock records of 2010. Beulah was formed in 1996 by Miles Kurosky and Bill Swan in San Francisco. They released four influential albums and were dubbed "the best band you've never heard." They made Magnet magazine's list of Lost Classics and The Onion A.V. Club's Hall of Fame, and their album When Your Heartstrings Break recently came in at #37 on Amazon's 100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums of All Time.

I loved Beulah. They were also a great live band. Looking forward to this.

Beulah were excellent; I really miss them. Very glad to see Miles doing some solo work. He's too interesting a songwriter to just drop out of the scene altogether.

GodsComic, if you haven't see the documentary "A Good Band Is Easy To Kill," check it out. It's a tour doc that chronicles their last days. Here's a review. Some excellent live recordings here. I agree, the were a great live band. Saw them open for Gomez at the 9:30 Club in D.C. and they really ripped the roof off the place.
