Les Savy Fav aiming to release new album in September
Band recording in New York with producer Chris Zane

Les Savy Fav are aiming to release their next studio album in September.

The band have been working on the follow-up to 2007's 'Let's Stay Friends' at New York's Gigantic Studios with producer Chris Zane, who produced their previous release and has also worked with The Walkmen and Passion Pit.

Bassist Syd Butler told NME that the album would be heavier than 'Let's Stay Friends'.

"We're not buying atmospheric gizmos to fill out space on the songs," he said. "They're all three-and-a-half minutes long, they're more compact and concise. This record feels a lot more '90s – closer to our roots."

Frontman Tim Harrington joked: "Yeah, we're trying to get back to the time when we didn't have any fans!"

Les Savy Fav Return With New Album

Theatrical Brooklyn spazzes Les Savy Fav still bring their brain-melting live shows to stages around the world on the regular, but the band hasn't released a studio album since 2007's Let's Stay Friends. On September 14, the band will release Root for Ruin, their new album, on bassist Syd Butler's Frenchkiss label. (It will be out September 13 in the UK on Wichita.)

When we talked to the band in April, they said they'd been tinkering with the album for a while, recording it in bits in pieces. They also said it'll sound more like "mid-1990s indie bands" than like the disco-informed flail they've perfected over previous records.

In a statement, Butler said, "I think Root for Ruin somehow captures all the best parts of Les Savy Fav. We went into it with no expectations, and super excited with what came out. All the songs are my favorites."

Les Savy Fav: 'Our album leaking was like sex without the foreplay'
Band speak about 'Root For Ruin' being rush-released

Les Savy Fav's Syd Butler has compared the leaking of their album 'Root For Ruin' to sex without foreplay.

Speaking in this week's issue of NME, Butler said that the band were disappointed at the way album came out.

As a result of the leak, the New Yorkers were forced to digitally release 'Root To Ruin' over a month early on August 3.

"It's like foreplay," Butler explained. "You want to have foreplay, or you just want to bang? This is like somebody said, 'Hey, you want to have sex tonight?' And you can't do anything about it."

Frontman Tim Harrington added that the band had shelved a series of audacious plans to promote the album following it being leaked.

"We had a lot of really cool, funny pranks and stunts planned before it came out," he said. "You want to make it teasing and fun."
