Hip-O, huh? Guess Capitol is backtracking on the idea of having as many of the Beatles as possible on the label (since they lost Macca, anyway).

I've heard that Paul plays bass on at least one track, and the album features some members of the last All-Starr Band (Gary Wright, Colin Hay, maybe Billy Squier). Gary Wright mentions these tidbits in the new issue of Beatlefan.
Ringo Starr grabbed a little help from his friends for his new album Y Not, due January 12th, 2010. The Beatles drummer will be joined by his Fab Four bandmate Paul McCartney on a couple of tracks, including first single “Walk With You,” which finds Macca and Starr sharing vocals. Other guests and songwriters on Y Not, Ringo’s first album since 2008’s Liverpool 8, include Joe Walsh, Joss Stone, Van Dyke Parks, Ben Harper and Richard Marx.
Talking about working with his old Beatles mate, Starr said in a press release, “Paul was doing the Grammys, so he came over to the house and was playing bass on ‘Peace Dream.’ So I played him this other track and Paul said, ‘Give me the headphones. Give me a pair of cans.’ And he went to the mike and he just invented that part where he follows on my vocal. That was all Paul McCartney, and there could be nothing better.”
“He makes it bigger and he makes it fuller,” Starr said of McCartney’s work on “Walk With You,” which was co-written by Starr and Parks. “It makes the song like a conversation between us, and that was Paul’s idea to do his part one beat behind me. That’s why he’s a gen-i-us and an incredible bass player.” Macca last appeared on a Starr album over a decade ago, on 1998’s Vertical Man. The pair also reunited earlier this year at a benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall.
Y Not also marks Starr’s first major foray into producing. “I was the least involved in the production of the Beatle records. And then with my solo records, ” Starr said. “Then suddenly, it’s another point in your life, and you say, ‘I’m going do this now.’ So I’ll be producing anything I make from now on. That’s the good news. It’s a confidence thing, I suppose. And Y Not is really another way of me saying, ‘Yes, I can.’” Y Not also includes the autobiographical “The Other Side of Liverpool” and opening track “Fill in the Blanks,” which features Starr’s brother-in-law, guitarist Joe Walsh.
The Beatles drummer will be joined by his Fab Four bandmate Paul McCartney on a couple of tracks, including first single “Walk With Me,” which finds Macca and Starr sharing vocals.
It's a Beatles reunion!!!!!

Just picked this up today from my local independent record shop. But before I break the seal, are there any special editions I should know about? Any Best Buy exclusives? Collaborations with John or George? Anything?!

I picked this up Saturday at my local indy record store. It is a nice little album. A little on the short side but one of Ringo's best efforts to date. To me it seems that he is putting out much better studio material than his former bandmate. Paul on the other hand blows him away with the live concert material - of course he has a bigger catalog to draw from.
At the end of the cd I was left wishing there were more tunes.

Picked this up yesterday ($9.99 at Newbury Comics), but likely won't get to hear it until this weekend. But i'm loving the comments here so far; looks like, once again, i won't be disappointed. Brought to mind a post i made after "Liverpool 8" came out:
I had to follow up on my contention that by virtue of his last 6 or so cds, Ringo was well on his way to eclipsing any of the other Beatles' solo catalogs for sheer volume of high-quality rock/pop songs. This is not even taking into account any great songs or lps released prior to 1998 (and i think his first three solo lps, "Sentimental Journey" - way ahead of it's time in concept, eh? preceded "A Little Touch Of Schmilsson in the Night" by a few years, not to mention the current trend of aging rock singers releasing albums of classic standards covers, and it's one of those LPs i still enjoy every bit as much as the first time i heard it, makes ya smile; "Beaucoups Of Blues" - with the stellar cast of Nashville sudio heavies, how could it NOT be a good album?; "Ringo", certainly had a nice group of timeless/classic pop tunes....)
Well, i finally had the time to go through and compile a personal "best of" for Ringo's releases from 1998-2008, originally thinking i could do it with a single disc - no way! It took two full cds, with little room to spare. It's called "Gold Starr (Head Of the Class): the best of Ringo and the Roundheads 1998-2008", and here's my case for Ringo being the one who has best carried forward the Beatles' legacy of great pop songs into the 21st century, as well as my case (along with his complete solo catalog) for being nominated to the (worthless as it may be) Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame:
disc one
1) One 2) What In the World 3) King Of Broken Hearts 4) Vertical Man 5) I Was Walkin' 6) La De Da 7) Without Understanding (from "Vertical Man" 1998) 8) Come On Christmas, Christmas Come On 9) I Wanna Be Santa Claus 10) The Christmas Dance 11) Dear Santa 12) Pax Um Biscum (Peace Be With You) (from " I Wanna Be Santa Claus" 1999) 13) Eye To Eye 14) Missouri Loves Company 15) Instant Amnesia 16) Never Without You 17) Imagine Me There 18) Write One For Me (from "Ringo Rama" 2003)
disc two
1) Love First, Ask Questions Later 2) What Love Wants To Be 3) Elizabeth Reigns 4) English Garden 5) I Really Love Her (from "Ringo Rama" 2003) 6) Fading In Fading Out 7) Give Me Back the Beat 8) Oh My Lord 9) Hard To Be True 10) Some People 11) Don't Hang Up 12) Choose Love 13) Me and You 14) Satisfied (from "Choose Love" 2005) 15) Liverpool 8 16) For Love 17) Gone Are the Days 18) Give It A Try 19) Tuff Love 20) Harry's Song 21) Love Is 22) R U Ready (from "Liverpool 8" 2008)
Any pop lovers, if you assemble these tracks as above, it really makes for quite a compelling listen. And perhaps a case that "in the end" Ringo really did turn out to be "the greatest". (and i realize all of the songs are co-writes, notwithstanding, Ringo is the impetus of any of this music being written and recorded, regardless of his specific contribution to any given song)

Saw Ringo on Fallon last night-the whole hour was dedicated to Ringo. He played 4 songs w/ Ben Harper and the Restless 7 as his backing band (I'm not much of a fan), but for the most part it was good. He played: I Wanna Be Your Man Walk With You The Other Side Of Liverpool With A Little Help My Friends
Ringo played drums on I Wanna Be Your Man and hearing that with two drummers was pretty cool. Ringo didn't even play that bad, although it was hard to truly make out what he was doing. Walk With You is a very nice song-great melodies and Harper added some very good vocals as well. The Other Side Of Liverpool was really bad though-cheesy lyrics, lame attempts at a funky sound and awful backing vocals by the female violin player (I have no idea if there are violin parts or female vox on the studio version). I thought the song was awful. And, With A Little Help My Friends sounded great with a nice guitar solo. Ringo talked about a variety of subjects-unfortuantely Jimmy's questions were cliched and awful and Ringo looked quite bored. Although I'm not a real Beatles fan, I like all 4 solo careers to some degree (George's being the best to me), but I've never understood how people laugh off Ringo's catalogue. His last few albums have been pretty good and get little attention and are never on major labels. Such a shame. Plus, the man has had a load of hits! Anyway, last night was pretty cool-I believe it will be repeated next Tuesday at 3am or so.
