Jack White forms yet another new band, new CD
Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Nashville, Tenn. (AP) -- No one can accuse Jack White of being lazy.

The rocker is already a member of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, and now White says he's formed a third band, The Dead Weather.

White announced the project Wednesday in Nashville and hosted a private party to hear the new CD and see a performance by the group. He says The Dead Weather's debut album, Horehound, will be released in June on his Third Man record label.

Besides White, the new group includes Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age and Jack Lawrence of The Greenhornes.

Both Fertita and Lawrence perform with White in The Raconteurs.

Sheryl Crow, Martina McBride and White's partner in the White Stripes, Meg White, were among more than 150 guests at the party.

Afterward, White said the group began as friends getting together to make music.

"The idea was to do a 7-inch single and be done with it, but we started writing songs and something happened," he said.

White says the band plans to tour this year.

Jack White Gets Dark and Dangerous With The Dead Weather

Posted Mar 20, 2009 11:15 AM

"I produced the record from the drummer's seat, which is a new angle for me," Jack White boasts.

Actually, the White Stripes and Raconteurs singer-guitarist is back to his first instrument — he started out as a drummer — in his latest band, the Dead Weather, which includes singer Alison Mosshart of the electro-blues duo the Kills, Raconteurs bassist Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita.

The Dead Weather began as a lark, after the Kills opened some Raconteurs shows in the U.S. last summer. White, Mosshart and Lawrence recorded a cover of Gary Numan's "Are 'Friends' Electric?" then quickly started writing originals and cutting a whole album at White's new Third Man studio-label complex in Nashville, which includes a vinyl-record store, a photography studio and a stage for live performances.

White, who also sings on the record, describes Dead Weather songs such as "Treat Me Like Your Mother" and "Hang You From the Heavens" as "very dark, very dangerous. There are synthesizers and acoustic instruments treated so they don't sound like themselves anymore."

The band recently unveiled its bluesy mix at a show for 150 friends — including Raconteurs Brendan Benson and Patrick Keeler and the White Stripes' Meg White — in Nashville, an event that also marked the opening of White's new Third Man offices.

Mosshart is a bit dizzy from the speed with which the Dead Weather made their debut — it came together in just three weeks. (They will also tour after the album's release in June.) "In the Kills, it takes a long time to finish anything," Mosshart says. "This band is fun because Jack works so fast. There is never a dull moment — ever."

Jack White's Dead Weather to tour this summer

Apr 17, 2009

Jack White's newly-formed band The Dead Weather are set to tour this summer and release new material towards the end of the year, guitarist Dean Fertita has revealed.

The band – which also features The Kills' Alison Mosshart and ' Jack Lawrence – are set to release their debut album, 'Horehound', in June.

Fertita told Billboard that the band had recorded material beyond that that would be released on 'Horehound', plus covers of Them's 'You Just Can't Win' and Downliner Set's 'Outside'.

"We still feel very much in the creative mode," he said. "We don't feel like we're ready to stop. I think we're going to try to maybe get a jump on. I don't know if it'll be a second record or singles to release throughout the year. There are a few things floating around, and there will be more soon, too."

He added that the band would hit the live circuit in the summer. "We know June through August we'll be doing a lot," he confirmed. "We plan to keep going through the fall and possibly beyond."
