I'm really looking forward to this one. Rather Ripped was my favorite album since Washing Machine. And Sonic Nurse was great too. After a few dodgy years of losing interest, I've been re-inspired by these guys.

If I had a million thumbs I'd twiddle, twiddle. But I just have two.
Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore has revealed that his band are in the process of writing a new studio album set to be released on an indie label.
The grunge band's record deal with Geffen expired after the band released 2006's 'Rather Ripped'. They are set to hit the studio in November and release their next album in Spring 2009.
Moore told Rolling Stone that after feeling "compromised" by being on a major label, his band would release their next effort on an indie, although he did not specify which one.
"There's one label we are certainly going to go with at this point," he said. "But I don't think I’m allowed to disclose that right now. I don’t want to risk having a shit storm.
"I've written a half-dozen song ideas. I try not to complete them so much. Last time we got together, we were creating sort of new band-zone-vibe sort of things."
Speaking about releasing the album on an indie, Moore said: "It feels great. The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation. But that's the way it goes."
Sonic Youth played the final ever show at Brooklyn's outdoor McCarren Pool venue on Saturday (August 30), marking the occasion by unexpectedly opening with two new songs.
Guitarist Thurston Moore explained to the crowd that the band had only just begun writing material for a new album in the past few days and the new songs didn't even have titles or real lyrics yet, but both were still rapturously received.
The first was sung by Moore and featured a Stooges-like riff but still maintained the strongly melodic element heard in the band's last album, 2006's 'Rather Ripped'.
The brooding second new song was more in keeping with the classic, early-'90s incarnation of Sonic Youth. This time, it featured Kim Gordon on vocals and gradually built up to a blistering noise finale that stopped dead at the track's end.
Sonic Youth played:
'Untitled New Song One' 'New Song Two' 'Burning Spear' 'Cross The Breeze' 'Hey Joni' 'Silver Rocket' 'The Wonder' 'Hyperstation' 'Mote' 'Jams Run Free' 'Pink Steam' 'Making The Nature Scene' 'Brother James' 'Expressway To Yr Skull'
Sonic Youth have signed a deal with independent label Matador for the release of their forthcoming album in 2009.
The album, due to be recorded this autumn, will be the band's first on an independent label since 1988's 'Daydream Nation'.
Following the double album's release, the four-piece signed with major label Geffen, remaining with the company through the release of 2006's 'Rather Ripped' and the end of their contract.
Sonic Youth's deal with Geffen paved the way for a number of alternative bands to sign with major labels, including Nirvana, who Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon is rumoured to have recommended to the company.
The band join artists including Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks, Cat Power and Fucked Up on Matador's roster.
Sonic Youth have reached the mixing stage of their forthcoming album, tentatively titled 'The Eternal'.
The band have also revealed the names of songs destined for the album.
The indie veterans are mixing the album with producer John Agnello (Patti Smith, Aerosmith, Dinosaur Jr.), revealing on Twitter.com/thesonicyouth that working titles for songs include 'Calming The Snake', 'Sacred Trickster', 'Massage The History', 'That's What We Know' and "something about a Malibu gas station".
Former Pavement guitarist Mark Ibold plays guitar on 'That's What We Know'.
Sonic Youth plan to release the new album, the follow-up to 2006's 'Rather Ripped', in June.

They're probably a better band now than they ever were. More focused, more experimental, more capable, more refined, more out there. They've had a bunch of great albums in the 1990s and 2000s. Washing Machine, A Thousand Leaves, Murray Street, Sonic Nurse. All well worth listening to.
Plus the side releases like the awesomely experimental SY-R releases are a real treat.
At long last, Sonic Youth have revealed all the pertinent details of the band’s much-anticipated 16th album proper. Titled The Eternal, the Wipers-inspired record of "heavy ass weirdo hooks" and “juicy supersonic songs” has been given the release date of June 9th and will come out courtesy of SY’s new non-major label home, Matador Records.
Recorded last year at the band's Echo Canyon West studio, the record again features Rather Ripped co-producer John Agnello behind the boards, with former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold taking Jim O’Rouke’s spot as Sonic Youth’s latest full-fledged member. And along with The Eternal being the band’s first album on an indie in 18 years, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo have marked another first by sharing lead vocal duties on several tracks.
"We've not had a record in our recent history that's been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation,” Matador’s Gerard Cosloy says of The Eternal in the press release. “Suffice to say we're pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves. Less of a reinvention and perhaps more to do with a particularly awesome dozen songs."
In addition to The Eternal (which features this rather awesome cover art by late guitar legend John Fahey), Sonic Youth also have tons of other stuff going on in their always busy schedules. On April 18, they will release two split seven-inches, one with Beck and another with Jay Reatard, as part of the Record Store Day celebrations. Also in April, the band will debut a stage collaboration with Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and composer Takehisa Kosugi written for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. And next week Kim Gordon is launching her Mirror/Dash clothing line at, um, Urban Outfitters.
For now, the band only have a few live shows lined up, but a full-on summer tour is expected to be announced shortly, as well as Matador’s Buy Early Get Now promotion for The Eternal, which promises “some very interesting bonus material.”
The Eternal:
1. “Sacred Trickster” 2. “Anti-Orgasm” 3. “Leaky Lifeboat (for Gregory Corso)” 4. “Antenna” 5. “What We Know” 6. “Calming the Snake” 7. “Poison Arrow” 8. “Malibu Gas Station” 9. “Thunderclap for Bobby Pyn” 10. “No Way” 11. “Walkin Blue” 12. “Massage the History”
Sonic Youth live dates:
4/22 Krems, Austria - Donau Festival 4/23 Munich, Germany - Hans Der Kunst 4/24 Dusseldorf, Germany - 3001 5/16 Brooklyn, NY - Music Hall of Williamsburg (No Fun Fest)

Visit your locally owned, independent record store for a chance to buy this album early via BuyEarly,GetNow. You pay in advance for the LP or CD and it gives you early access to a live stream of the album (commencing in late April) as well as some downloads and a free live LP on release day along with the new one you already ordered. Pretty pricey if you want the vinyl but an overall good value. Check out buyearlygetnow@matadorrecords.com for details and likely a participating store in your area. If it doesn't show a store in your area, call around as accurate listings of indie stores are hard to come by.

Ok, it is streaming in its entirety. Maybe I had a computer glitch. On first listen, this sounds like a band reborn. Don't know if its because of Mark Ibold or being on Matador, but if the band they are today recorded Daydream Nation (or Dirty) right now, this is how it would sound. Expansive, noisy, dreamy and they rock as if their lives depended on it. Sonic Youth at the top of their game and playing out of their skin 28 years in. Wow. I am floored.

The new Sonic Youth album is excellent, and I think long time fans should enjoy this. I agree with the earlier statement that they are a better band now than they ever were.
I signed up early for the cd, and picked up the live LP from a local record shop. The Sonic Youth concert is from NYC on the 4th of July, 2008. More excellent stuff!
