Oasis to begin recording new album

Oct 30, 2007

Oasis will enter London's Abbey Road studios on November 5 to record their seventh album. They have already completed work on two songs set for the album, and have demoed the rest.

Speaking to BBC 6Music, Noel Gallagher revealed that the band already began initial recording at the studio six weeks ago, and plan to mix the album after a Christmas break.

"We start in Abbey Road a week on Monday [November 5]," he said. "Then we'll probably work through a couple of months there, have Christmas off, then go and mix it and see where we're at.

"We all write separately, but for some reason all the songs sound like they've got a common thread. We've been focusing round the grooves more this time."

He added: "The last album ['Don't Believe The Truth'] was quite 'songy', if that makes any sense - it was quite a British, retro, '60s sounding album. This [new album] is focusing round the grooves more."

Gallagher went on to explain that he'd been having difficulty coming up with lyrical inspiration.

"I've literally got nothing left to write about," he said. "I've written about being a youth, and I've written about being a rock star, and I've written about living life in the big city."

Hey, apparently this is the only way to get the new Oasis single "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" on CD. It is available all over as a download. This collection also has an exclusive Keane track and a bunch of other (previously available) good stuff!

Oasis mixing new album this week

Jan 9, 2008

Oasis are reportedly mixing their latest album in Los Angeles this week, it has been reported today (January 9).

According to a report on US radio station G Rock, the band’s seventh studio record is being mixed after Oasis finished recording sessions at London’s Abbey Road Studios late last year.

The band also recorded and mixed part of their last album, 2005's 'Don't Believe The Truth', in the city with producer Dave Sardy, who is based there.

At the time Noel Gallagher told NME.COM he had been initially reluctant to work in Los Angeles, but eventually enjoyed the experience.

“I’ve got to say I was bit nervous going to America because it’s a bit like being in a little spaceship going into the Death Star in ’Star Wars’ when you go over to that country, especially Los Angeles,” he declared. “I was like ‘Fucking hell, there’s loads of idiots with long hair. I don’t want to meet any rappers or anyone in a rock band’ but once we got over the initial hurdle it was great. We were in our own little bubble.”

The album is expected to be released in the spring. However, the band have yet to confirm any details.

So if mixed in January and promotion has started, release can't be too far off. Yay! Despite the naysayers, I think Oasis remains a fab little rock and roll band. Good tunes, great hooks. As much as people knocked the last few records, I enjoyed them.

New Oasis songs leak online

May 6, 2008

Three songs reportedly for Oasis' next album have leaked online.

Links to downloads of the tracks, ' I Wanna Live A Dream (In My Record Machine)', 'Nothin' On Me' and 'Stop the Clocks' started appearing on messageboards and fansites throughout the day (May 6).

Since then some fans have copied the clips and made them available via sites like Youtube. It appears steps are being taken to remove the demos with several previously working links now dead.

Of the leaked tracks, NME.COM has had a listen to the three songs and here is our initial impression.

'Nothin' On Me'
A relentless crunchy riff from Noel Gallagher and a sneery nasal vocal from Liam characterise this rollocking new Oasis song. It's a meaty return for the band, more Led Zeppelin-inspired than their more subtle recent work, such as 'The Importance Of Being Idle'. "They got nothing on me," Liam repeats, "I don't care what they say – all I want is the truth". A forceful return from the Gallaghers, although lacking the smash'n'grab choruses of some of their other anthems.

'I Wanna Live A Dream (In My Record Machine)'
Opening with a soft tambourine shake cut through by Noel Gallagher's sombre acoustic guitar, Noel sings John Lennon-style vocals on this quieter number. Tambourine and bells rattling in the background throughout give a Doors-esque edge to the affair, with drummer Zak Starkey's glammy stomp pumping in a minute in to add weight to the song. "Take Me, back to the darkness where they sent me," Noel Gallagher sings on this subtle yet uplifting and punchy number. "I want to live the dream" he sings on an uprising chorus, "I want a piece of the world", before weighty piano stabs add to the build. Towards the death a classically understated Noel Gallagher riff brings the song home. Understated yet upliftingly epic, it's a song of fine balance and poise.

'Stop The Clocks'
Noel Gallagher is a huge fan of this song, naming their 2006 'Best Of' album after it. Noel sings lead vocals over urgent acoustic strums, while a psychedelic guitar sound effect again adds a Doors-esque element to the intro. Noel cuts in over his own more conventional vocals with an echo-effect voice sample before his bandmates add to the build by adding layered backing vocals. It's a lighters-in-the-air moment for sure, although without the immediacy of a 'Wonderwall' or 'Don't Look Back In Anger'. "Stop the clocks and turn the world around," he sings. "Let your love lay me down…". "When the night is over there'll be no sound", he continues in a Lee Mavers-esque repetitive croon, before a drumbeat pounds and clatters towards a riffy crescendo, with a sudden twang to finish.

The leaked tracks are unfinished recordings, missing some instrumentation and backing vocals. The two Noel-sung tracks are classic Oasis, the Liam track sounds more like B-side fodder to me, but judge for yourselves:

I'm really liking Noel's vocals much more than Liam's these days.

OASIS SAY LEAKED TRACKS ARE OLD DEMOS, NOT NEW MATERIAL

What were thought of as three brand new Oasis songs which leaked online earlier this week (May 6) are apparently not tracks from the band's forthcoming studio album, the band have stated.

Fans had found links and posted them across fansites and messageboards fuelling rumour that these must be new material from the band who have been recording their eighth studio album, due for release this September.

In a statement on Oasis' official website Oasisinet.com, the following statement has been posted: "A number of old Oasis songs have appeared on the internet amidst claims that the band's new album has leaked.

The songs are actually all old demos from previous sessions and well informed fans will have known that these tracks have been in circulation for some time. In fact, most are versions of songs that have already been released.

None of the songs are from sessions for the band's new studio album."

The three songs were entitled "I Wanna Live A Dream (In My Record Machine)", "Nothin' On Me" and "Stop The Clocks".

The tracks are still available to hear on this MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/newoasissongs.

The new album, the follow-up to 2005's Don't Believe The Truth, has been produced by Dave Sardy, whose previous credits include the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and Primal Scream.

They are most definitely demos, unfinished recordings. But none of the three tracks have been previously released, and the "official statement" above sounds just like the tech-unsavvy response Oasis' management gave for the early leaks of their last two albums. I'm glad these songs have made it out in some form, anyway ...

Oasis member quits

May 12, 2008

Oasis drummer Zak Starkey is unlikely to perform with the band again after falling out with singer/guitarist Noel Gallagher.

According to The Sun today (May 12), Starkey is highly unlikely to play with the band on any forthcoming live dates, and his involvement in their forthcoming new album, recently completed, will be his last with Oasis.

The newspaper quotes a source close to the band as saying: "There have been arguments with Noel Gallagher and general disagreements."

No official announcement about a possible departure or replacement have been made by the band.

The band are due to embark on a US tour in August, and are rumoured to be announcing further live plans soon.

Noel Gallagher steals Robbie Williams' drummer

May 15, 2008

Oasis's Noel Gallagher has reignited his feud with Robbie Williams by stealing his drummer.

Following the departure of Zak Starkey, Gallagher has recruited Chris Sharrock, who used to drum for Williams.

Gallagher famously called Williams a "fat dancer".

A source told The Daily Mirror: "Oasis and Robbie have an ongoing feud. This move is sure to infuriate Robbie.

"Everyone thinks Chris has had enough of sitting on the picket line and not playing music (Williams is currently in dispute with label EMI).

"Oasis aren't striking against anyone so at least he'll be getting a bit of action now."

I prefer to think of Chris Sharrock as World Party's drummer, not Robbie Williams's. Same goes for the song "She's The One."

Oasis gear up for release with new record deal

Jun 19, 2008

Oasis appear to have started moving towards a new record release by signing a three-album deal in partnership with Sony BMG today (June 19).

The group's own Big Brother Recordings will release the band's new albums in a profit share arrangement with the major label. Thanks to a brand new music business structure Oasis' Big Brother label will also look after the distribution and marketing of the band's back catalogue in all major markets worldwide.

The group's first album in partnership with Sony BMG is due out later this year.

Oasis have released all of their albums on their own label since the dissolution of Creation Records in the late 1990s, including 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants', 'Heathen Chemistry' and 'Don't Believe The Truth'.

One of Oasis' management team, Alec McKinlay, celebrated the deal, saying: "This is an imaginative and exciting arrangement which will allow Big Brother to team up with the creme of both the independent and major sectors worldwide to build on Oasis' already considerable international success.

"This allows the band to take advantage of all the opportunities presented by the new business models available today as well as remaining totally in control of their own destiny. We are really pleased that Sony BMG have demonstrated the foresight and courage to engage with the band in this way."

Ged Doherty, Chairman and CEO of Sony BMG Music Entertainment UK added: "Oasis are in complete control of their destiny and could have chosen to sign with anyone - or even go it alone - so I am delighted that they have chosen to continue to work with us. In addition this new arrangement will empower Big Brother to market and release not only the new albums but also the historic catalogue in many countries of the world so that they can replicate the unparalleled sales and marketing record they have in the UK."

Oasis exclusive: new album and single details announced

Jun 24, 2008

Oasis will release their next studio album, 'Dig Out Your Soul', on October 6 on their Big Brother label.

The album will be preceded by a single, 'The Shock Of The Lightning', on September 29.

The LP, which will be the band's seventh studio effort, was produced by Dave Sardy, who also worked on Oasis' last album, 2005's 'Don't Believe The Truth'. It was recorded in London's Abbey Road and mixed in Los Angeles.

Comeback single 'The Shock Of The Lightning' was written by Noel Gallagher and features his brother, Liam Gallagher, on lead vocals.

Speaking about the album Noel Gallagher said: "I wanted to write music that had a groove; not songs that followed that traditional pattern of verse, chorus and middle eight.

"I wanted a sound that was more hypnotic; more driving. Songs that would draw you in, in a different way. Songs that you would maybe have to connect to – to feel."

Of 'The Shock Of The Lightning', Gallagher added: "If 'The Shock Of The Lightning' sounds instant and compelling to you, it's because it was written dead fast. And recorded dead fast.

"'The Shock of The Lightning' basically is the demo. And it has retained its energy. And there’s a lot to be said for that, I think. The first time you record something is always the best."

BTW, for those who didn't know, the bass player's name is not pronounced like "Jem" but like "gum" except with an E in the middle.

Oasis: 'Nearly named album after Geri Halliwell song'

Jul 4, 2008

Noel Gallagher has admitted he nearly named his album after a Geri Halliwell song – until his girlfriend pointed it out.

'Dig Out Your Soul', out on October 6, was nearly called 'Bag It Up', the star explained.

"The missus goes 'Bag It Up'? isn't that a song by Geri Halliwell. I was like: 'You've ruined my entire fucking year!'," he told Mojo.

The song in question was a UK Number One single in March 2000.
