From Billboard.com: An April concert by Heart featuring a complete performance of its debut album, "Dreamboat Annie," is headed to CD and DVD Oct. 23, 2007 via Shout! Factory. The aptly named "Dreamboat Annie Live" is the first in a new series, "Legendary Albums Live," featuring complete album performances. The show was originally broadcast on DIRECTV on Mother's Day and will be re-aired in October. As previously reported, Heart principal Ann Wilson's solo debut, "Hope and Glory," will arrive Sept. 11 via Zoe/Rounder. Sounds OK I guess-I wish these bands did this in their prime with the classic lineups and not now! Linda, I know covers albums are YACA-what can we call these tours and albums where artists are performing albums in their entirety? It's getting quite lame by now, and Sonic Youth, Iggy & The Stooges and Queensryche to name a just a few keep it going!
[bigred]CD[/bigred] Led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart broke down barriers and redefined what it meant to be a rock star. Now, on the first release in the new Legendary Albums Live series, they revisit their very first triumph, live on stage, in front of an ecstatic audience. Thrill as they play their legendary debut album Dreamboat Annie live for the first time ever. The band tears into their hits "Crazy On You" and "Magic Man" and covers classics by Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd, all of which inspired them as they were writing and recording Dreamboat Annie. 1. [bigred]DVD/Blu-ray[/bigred] Amazon.com Thirty-one years after Heart released its breakthrough album Dreamboat Annie, the Seattle-based band has made a DVD companion to that record. The concert performance for Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live was recorded in April 2007 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. The rest of the DVD includes documentaries on the band, along with interviews with Ann and Nancy Wilson--the sisters who are Heart. When Heart exploded onto the rock music scene in the 1970's, they were an anomaly: Women were either in girl groups or played secondary roles in bands. Not the Wilsons. With raven-haired Ann singing with a powerful voice that's equal parts Janis Joplin and Robert Plant, and blonde Nancy playing the guitar the way only men are supposed to, they took center stage, literally and figuratively. Their bandmates came and went, but Heart was all about the working and familial relationship between the sisters. Seasoned performers, Ann and Nancy shine in the concert footage.! Age has barely tempered Ann's vocals, which are strong and fierce throughout, particularly singing "Crazy on You" and "Black Dog" (a favorite Led Zeppelin song of theirs). Heart purists will scoff that original guitarist Roger Fisher and drummer Michael Derosier are absent from the DVD, but Craig Bartock and Ben Smith do a formidable job as their respective replacements. Heart has always been best heard live. Yes, their songs sound crisper and clearer on CDs, but it's their live performances where their passion and energy truly shine through. Dreamboat Annie Live doesn't replace a concert experience, but it's a worthwhile simulation. Product Description Led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart broke down barriers and redefined what it meant to be a rock star. It's getting quite lame by now, and Sonic Youth, Iggy & The Stooges and Queensryche to name a just a few keep it going! I agree. When I first heard that Ann Wilson was coming out with her first solo album, I thought it was intriguing. Then, I saw that it was a covers album and I just shrugged. Disappointing for someone of her voice and stature. I thought Heart's last album was a step in the right direction, back to their roots and yet had a bit of a modern edge to it. Looks like it'll be a few more years before we see another new studio album from Heart.

Brian Wilson started this trend with full album concerts back in 2002.

We should think up acronyms for all these things. Maybe just call them all CD-As ("Clive Davis Approach"). The worst example for me so far is Cheap Trick (and I'm saying this as a big Cheap Trick fan) doing a concert where they're going to perform Sgt Pepper in its entirety, an album they originally had nothing to do with, and surely parlay that show into a CD and DVD. These gimmicks are sort of sad and smell of commercial desperation, although on a purely musical level they're often enjoyable. You know that Cheap Trick will do a great job and it'll be fun to hear, but why are they doing it at all? I just don't like the mindset behind this kind of stuff. First it was the flood of all-covers albums, then the "remixed and reimagined" collections where they turn Elvis into the King Of Disco and Dylan's going to be a techno-god, then the "necro-duets" (as one of our members called it) where dead artists are paired with current chart stars, and now we have to see every band perform full albums in concert 30 or even 40 years after the fact. Ann Wilson is a goddess as far as I'm concerned, but come on, she's so talented, do something NEW. (End of rant, sorry. )

Well I am glad somebody (Cheap Trick) is doing something about the anniversary of "Sgt. Pepper's" since EMI/Capitol seems to have fallen asleep at the switch.
And if anybody can pull this off it would be "Cheap Trick". Personally I hope they film this for release. Their live "Silver" DVD was excellent especially with the guests, hopefully we will have the same with surprises at the Hollywood Bowl concert.
I agree with your remark about Ann Wilson, incredible talent but the covers discs are in vogue now aswell as it increases the chance of an label putting it out in the first place.
Music is in a sorry place right now. :{

I wouldn't sell Ann Wilson's CD short just yet. I heard clips of "Immigrant Song", and her duet with Elton on "Where to now, St Peter". They're not the original arrangements, they sound fresh, and at least she's taking them in a different direction. Not like Rod did with his, just note for note recreations.
As far as classic albums being redone. I don't see the point either, unless the songs are rearranged. Mick Jones of Foreigner has said he has plans to record a live version of the band's "4" album with the current lineup. So it looks like this is the new trend...

Jeff I wasn't even crazy about the "semi-unplugged" re-recordings that Mick and Lou Gramm did that were included as bonus tracks on Rhino's 4 remaster. The prospect of this Foreigner tribute band re-re-recording them is even less enticing.

I'd also like to echo that Heart's last studio album "Jupiter's Darling" from 2004 was damn good and I still listen to it. It was dry and hard rocking with a nice mix of acoustic tunes and no crap. Why do this? Well, it's easy, attracts some attention and makes people think they're seeing something special. I hadn't heard about the Cheap Trick thing, but it's kinda cool and kinda lame at the same time. Some bands have done entire album covers recently, the most ghastly being Six Feet Under's demolition of AC/DC's "Back In Black"! The Walkmen did the Nilsson album "Pussy Cats" and I like The Walkmen, but didn't bother. If Foreigner re-do "4" it's beyond a joke, but don't be surprised. I'm just glad we have intelligent, real knowledgable music fans here (and perhaps obsessive too!) who can see through this crap a mile away!!!

In the past couple of years, I've seen Deep Purple do Machine Head, Jethro Tull do Aqualung, Elton John do Capt. Fantastic, and Roger Waters do Dark Side of the Moon. I'm a sucker for these performances.

I think if you are a fan, a full album concert will be something special. I've seen Arthur Lee and Love twice, but would have liked to have seen the "Forever Changes" concert with a full orchestra.

Instead of this new release why hasn't Dreamboat Annie been remastered and reissued in it's original form? I happen to have the mini-LP that Capital released many years ago but the version that's still available is terrible sound and graphics wise. Also, the "reissues" that were done a few years ago of their first three Sony albums were, in my opinion, very sloppily done. This band needs a definitive box set and a better overhauling of their catalog!

Man, you ain't kidding! There was supposedly a box set planned a few years ago, and it got scrapped. They really need one, I was making a Heart comp and had a copule of B-sides to put on it. Then I decided to investigate if I was missing anything, I had no idea the stuff that was out there, and is now hard to get.

Uh-Oh! LOL! If the plans hold true, then you guys are also going to have to be prepared for the supposed DVD/CD release of Cowboy Junkies-Trinity Session II for later this year as well.

I also forgot to mention these: Last year Dream Theater covered "Dark Side Of The Moon" and released a DVD of that. Cool, that it wasn't one of their albums, but Dark Side? Why? DT have recently played their debut album in its entirety so they're guilty of doing it with their own music and someone else's! Also, last year, Metallica played "Master Of Puppets" all the way through on a European tour. I got a DVD of a pro-shot show from Germany and it was good, so they got me on that one, but the bootleg was cheap! And, last year I saw Iron Maiden play their whole NEW album "A Matter Of Life And Death". A great album, but I did not need to hear the whole, 70 minute thing live. That was too much. I believe when they were still called The Doors, they played "L.A. Woman" the whole way through and did a DVD a few years back. Also, the Human League are playing all of "Dare" on a tour this year. When will it stop???

The thing i find a bit weird is that when Dreamboat Annie was released, Heart was a band. Now it's Ann, Nancy & their friend Sue Ennis with whatever studio musicians they've hired that week. Before drugs got the best of him, Roger Fisher was a smoking guitar player. I can't remember any of the band names, but Fisher had a couple of absolutely killer bar bands in the Seattle area after Ann & Nancy fired him. If I remember right, he was doing 80's glam/hard rock. He co-fronted one of the bands with a female singer, & I THINK one also had Scott Randall of Randall-Rossberg. He also was in Alias with 2 of the other guys from Heart, Mike Derosier & Steve Fossen. To the guys in the original band, I think the moral of the story is don't date the female band leaders & then break up! Just found his website while writing this post, http://www.rogerfisher.comhe's changed a bit.......

Just joined Roger's E-Mail list(the link is on the main page), will have to check out his site later when I have more time.
Will be interesting to see how Ann's new solo CD does, and whether or not Heart's back catalog gets redone.
Thanks, Bill

DanO, make sure you watch the DVD. I enjoyed that quite alot, just wish it were longer. They do a great blues shuffle version of "Ridin' storm Out". Funny thing about it though, Neal Doughty is absent from it.

Re: Heart
I saw Paul Rodgers at the Itasca Fourth Of July Celebration in 2006 - Howard Leese was in the band that day.
