As is typical of releases of this type, amazon.co.uk (at 9 pounds) is the way to go with this one initially (compared with $32 at the U.S. site).

Does anyone have any comments on the song selection/sound quality of the two sets below? I need a good Stylistics comp and read good things about both:

Both discs are fine, and to these ears at least, comparable in sound quality. (Neither stunned me, but both are acceptable.) The American edition on Amherst is a pretty solid Stylistics compilation with good track-by-track liner notes courtesy of Russell Thompkins, Jr., but be aware that Thompkins' recent solo tracks round out the second CD. For a 2-disc "all Stylistics, all the time" compilation, the British ULTIMATE COLLECTION is a better choice.
That said, most of the tracks are duplicated on both collections, and the liner notes aren't as copious on the British set. I bought both packages, but one will certainly do -- the track overlap is quite significant.

How much of the second disc of the American version is new? ...cause that might be the deciding factor for me, unless the liners are so revelatory.

Beware of re-recordings.

As far as I'm aware, the first disc of this new set contains the original recordings. The 2-disc set is on Universal, who controls the Thom Bell/Hugo & Luigi/Amherst recordings in the UK. (The only cheapie Stylistics disc I know of is a "Live In Concert" with a late touring lineup.) As for the second disc, does anybody know what lineup of the Stylistics features on this new album? Or, more likely, Russell Thompkins Jr. and his sidemen? Should I take the plunge & buy it, I'll report back.
