My sister-in-law sings this song regularly at karaoke. So much so that I hear her version now instead of Myles's. :)

She had at least one other hit up here but we are desperately trying to forget about her. Someone also did a brutal country cover of Black Velvet IIRC

I think this deserves worldwide distribution. Why should we have to suffer alone?? (I did hear it is a store today)

Careful what you wish for! :) This album is now going to be released domestically, on November 11th. See updated details in the first post.

I'm not sure what is up with all the Alannah Myles hate in here, but her first release was excellent IMO and so is the song Black Velvet. She fell off from there in subsequent releases, but so have tons of other artists after a smash debut. From what little I have heard of her Black Velvet remake on her website, I didn't like it, nor would I buy her new release, but I don't see the need to trash her personally. Is that what we want this site to turn into?--because it easily could.

I like her debut, though it hasn't aged well for me. My post was just that the remake of BV sucks.

Well, she's definitely not the first artist to try to give an old hit a trendy new arrangement. "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86" anyone? Sure, I prefer the original "Black Velvet" too but at least she didn't record one of those note-for-note soundalikes that end up on budget compilations.

Geff, you mentioned liking her debut. My wife has that album but I just realized I've never actually listened to the whole thing. I guess I was afraid it would be one of those "one good track" CDs. I'll have to give it a spin.

I'd give it about a 6 of 10. At the time of release, I thought fairly highly of it.

Glenn, it's a good blues rock cd and has other good tracks besides Black Velvet. It starts strong and it is definitely not Black Velvet and filler. I'd give it a 9 out of 10.

Which makes the sonic choices of the "Black Velvet" remake all the more jarring...

cali, Alannah has gone through a long fight with her old record label. She's probably been through a long personal struggle, which I am sure affects her music. As for Black Velvet, she probably shouldn't have redone it. Maybe she did so to reconnect with her long-lost audience, but the version she chose to do it with probably won't succeed in doing that.
