The Streets reveal all about new album

Jan 22, 2008

Mike 'The Streets' Skinner has revealed all about his forthcoming new album, set to be released in April.

Skinner previously scrapped an entire album's worth of music, which had previously been set to be his fourth studio album, and started from scratch. His new album has dispensed with samples, instead using real musicians for the recording process.

"I just read an interview with Radiohead and they were saying you always forget how hard albums are," he told NME.COM. “I think that’s true. It’s been two years in the making really and keeping up…knowing that the light at the end of the tunnel is really far away, the task is a very hard task, but I think you always forget how hard the albums before were as well.”

Skinner admitted that the problems he encountered trying to complete his album were of his own doing.

He explained: “It was quite well written and the rhyming was really good from a rap point of view but you were just left kind of empty so there wasn’t much to really stimulate people. So I got rid of about 80 percent of the songs on the album and then started again.

“I felt pretty disastrous really,” he continued. “It was a year’s work up till that point, it wasn’t a very happy place."

Skinner describes the new songs as, “Smoother, nicer and more detailed”. Track titles include ‘Everything Is Borrowed’ and ‘The Escapist’.

“I’m finishing off at the moment and our Jedi Council seem to be all in agreement now we’ve got an album!” joked Skinner. “The Jedi have said yes, so hopefully we should be done in January.”

Product Description
The first time people heard The Streets' debut "Original Pirate Material", they couldn't figure out whether the artist was black or white, from London or the Midlands, deadly serious or a total joker. We now know who Mike Skinner is, so for him to have come up with a record that surprises and delights is an even more impressive achievement. "Everything Is Borrowed" finds Mike not only rediscovering his irrepressible buoyancy, but sailing away on that trademark stop-start lyrical flow to waters no one else has visited.

1. Everything Is Borrowed
2. Heaven For The Weather
3. I Love You More (Than You Like Me)
4. The Way Of The Dodo
5. On The Flip Of A Coin
6. On The Edge Of A Cliff
7. Never Give In
8. The Sherry End
9. Alleged Legends
10. The Strongest Person I Know
11. The Escapist

The Streets name new album – but reveal their days are numbered

Jun 2, 2008

Mike Skinner has suggested that The Streets next album will be called 'Everything Is Borrowed' – but revealed the record that will follow it will be The Streets' last release.

Posting on his blog, Skinner said the band's fourth album will be more uplifting then its predecessor, 2006's 'The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living'.

"If you like The Streets you are about to experience the peaceful positive vibes that come after a disturbing work such as the last you heard," Skinner explained, before revealing he is already working on his next album.

"But the final Streets album (the fifth one) will be dark and futuristic. This could not be further from the album you're about to hear, but it's what is on my mind at the moment. I feel inspired by the synthesizer exhibition we just visited in Graz [Austria] after the gig we just did."

The star admitted that he'd perhaps given too much away in his post.

"Of course, I'm not supposed to tell you about this dark vision of the future because I'm about to promote my peaceful coming to terms album," Skinner noted.

"I'm told the peaceful one is quite good, although I've heard it so many times that it's just noise to me now. But the really exciting thing for me is the dark Berlin-influenced electronic album that'll come next."

The Streets complete fourth album

Jul 18, 2008

Mike Skinner has finished recording The Streets' fourth album, 'Everything Is Borrowed'.

Two and half years after the release of his last album, 'The Hardest Way To Make A Living', the Brummie star today announced he had completed his new record on his MySpace blog.

An obviously excited/drunk Skinner wrote: "WWOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. THE 2.5 YEAR MARATHON IS OVER!!! ALBUM 4 BABY! EVERYTHING IS BORROWED. REAL BIG UP IN THIS PIECE. AAAAIIIIII."

He had previously told NME.COM that the album would see him moving away from his standard lyrical subjects of drugs, girls and beer in order to tackle the more weighty issue of the environment and climate change. However, having decided that the new songs were "too preachy", he scrapped most and started again.

One that remains, entitled 'The Way of the Dodo', warns mankind against the dangers of the impending environmental apocalypse, with the lyrics proclaiming: “It’s not the earth that’s in trouble/It’s the people who live on it/It will be here long after we’ve all gone the way of the Dodo.” Other song titles include 'The Sherry End' and 'And On The Flip Of A Coin'.

Skinner also posted photographs of the prototype of a lighter-shaped USB dongle, stamped with The Streets logo, which he says are "packed with harsh me-based lyric dem".

Mike Skinner 'fucking sick' of The Streets

Aug 29, 2008

Mike Skinner has reiterated that the album that follows his next effort, 'Everything Is Borrowed', will be his last as 'The Streets', saying he is "fucking sick" of the name and its implications.

He told The Guardian that he wanted to become a more eclectic artist and leave The Streets as a finite body of work.

"All I've been thinking about for the last two years is water, beaches and trees," he said, referring to the subject matter of 'Everything Is Borrowed', The Streets' fourth album, out on September 15.

He added: "I'm just fucking sick of it, you know?"

He continued: "[I want to be liberated] from that word 'The Streets' and all that I feel that The Streets should be."
