A new soul album by the First Lady of Immediate, P.P. Arnold, and a certain Dr. Robert, is out now on the Curb label: "Five in the Afternoon". P.P. Arnold was the UK sixties indie label Immediates most popular female vocalist, scoring a hit with a great cover of Cat Stevens' "The First Cut is the Deepest".

Dr Robert is Robert Howard, who was the leader of '80s band The Blow Monkeys. (I added that to your subject line, Goog, so people will know who he is.) He's put out several obscure solo albums since the group split in 1990, with a sound somewhere inbetween Paul Weller and Nick Drake. They're all quite good and well worth checking out if you're into that type of music. It's "English Folk Soul", for lack of a better way of describing it.

Howard has also guested on a few Weller albums, and Weller's returned the favour on more than one Dr Robert album.

This new disc with P.P. Arnold is another winner, I've had it for a week and love it. :ohyes:

I thought Dr. Robert was some kind of Beatles name-checking DJ or producer. I'm going to get this album in due course. I also recommend P.P. Arnold's CD single of the old Mike Nesmith chestnut, "Different Drum" - and of course her recordings for Immediate.

Hi everybody,

I think I will be getting the new P.P. Arnold album on our helpful librarian's suggestion--and because the cover looks cool.

Also I have just purchased the deluxe edition of 22 dreams and it's absolutely brilliant. It might be his best solo album, or at least (for me) it's up there with Wild Wood and his other best work. The thing I love about this one is the variety of styles--it covers just about everything he does well, soul, funk, psychedelic, rock, folk...really fantastic album.

His last album "As Is Now" was a pretty good return to form after a couple of less interesting projects (the covers record for instance), but "22 Dreams" is many notches above "As Is Now".

The bonus disc on the deluxe edition contains 7 or so demos and unreleased tracks and the packaging is very nice, so fans of his work might want to spring for that over the 1 cd version (which still contains 21 songs).

Witchgirl!
