From Yahoo.co.uk this morning:

Sir Paul McCartney is following Rod Stewart's example and releasing an album of standards.
The former Beatles star has been secretly recording covers of hits he listened to while growing up with Elvis Costello's singer/songwriter wife Diana Krall.
He tells Rolling Stone, "It’s my dad’s style of music. I’ve wanted to do that kind of thing forever, since the Beatle days. But then Rod went mad on it. I thought, 'I have to wait so it doesn’t look like I’m trying to do a Rod'.
"They’re just songs I admire, I’m trying to steer away from the obvious ones. It’s get-home-from-work music. You put it on and get a glass of wine."

No interest whatsoever! I really hope he's joking. Please tell me that this announcement was made on April 1st.

I am not a fan of Paul (or the Beatles, really), but I read that yesterday on Perez Hilton's website, which went on further to discuss another project for Paul:

Paul also plans on going in the opposite direction and will begin work on another album that will feature "heavier rock." And he hopes to work with Dave Grohl on the new tracks. Paul says:

"It sounds quite wacky, but it keeps it fresh. I love that – you get a crazy idea and go with it. You never know – I may run into a garage to make this other album.

But it won't be in Dave's garage."

Wow, the man is in his late 60s and he still knows how to make great music and stay current. We applaud Paul and can't wait to hear his new albums!

I was hoping he got that shit out of his system a long time ago with Thrillington. This is embarrassing.

Back when he was with the Beatles McCartney wrote a lot of songs in the standards mode, quieter or more nostalgic tunes. Yesterday, Your Mother Would Know, Things We Said Today, And I Love Her, Michelle, etc. He figured he probably wouldn't be accepted as a rocker when he was older, so he went with the only model available for older singers and consciously set up a career as more of a night club-cabaret style singer. That was what Sinatra had done when the screaming girls went away. It was what Elvis what doing, too. To his surprise he found himself accepted as a rocker as he got older. But he still has that whole backlog of standard-style songs in his repertoire. So I don't think this is a surprise at all.

But I'd be more interested in an album of harder rock.

Paul's always was and always will be a romantic; there's just no way around it. He'll always be capable of rockin' when he wants, but I don't know if I wanna hear that style at his age.

Who knows? Working with Diana Krall could yield some interesting results. I hadn't paid attention to Barbra Streisand for years, but I absolutely love Krall's work on "Love Is The Answer." Yeah, I know comparing Streisand to McCartney is a futile exercise, but at least she's sensitive to the artist she's working with.

I think his voice has eroded too much to be successful doing standards, and next to Diana's voice, OUCH. Of course, Rod Stewart's stuff sold and his voice is shot, so who knows?

Well there's nothing that says Diana is going to SING with Paul. She produced Barbra's album, but there were no duets.

Paul wouldn't be the only Beatle to do this. How about Ringo's Sentimental Journey? Say what you want, but I've always liked that one.

I think Paul could do something interesting within this genre, especially if he puts his own creative stamp on it and doesn't just do straight covers of these songs.

Paul's collaborative efforts almost always yield interesting results, from Elvis Costello to Youth to that guy he used to work with in The Beatles. Diana Krall is a respected artist and I think this could be worth a listen.

Quote:
Paul McCartney’s next studio album will be entitled My Valentine and is expected to be released on Feb 6th 2012.

Speaking to French radio station RTL, McCartney described the forthcoming album as ”old-fashioned”. He said: “This will sound like the years between 1920-1940, the time when my father was 20. These are songs I heard. My family, my uncles, everybody sang. And there will be pieces I wrote, but in this style. ”

“I worked with Diana Krall, and great jazz musicians like John Clayton. This is an album very tender, very intimate. This is an album you listen to at home after work, with a glass of wine or a cup of tea”.

So the album – which has been produced by veteran Tommy Lipuma – is a mixture of standards and McCartney penned songs in that style – presumably along the lines of You Gave Me The Answer and Honey Pie. Diana Krall is of course, Mrs Elvis Costello, so her involvement makes sense given the long-standing friendship between the two men.

The timing of the release and the title would indicate that Concord music are looking for a piece of the Valentine’s Day market, and it will be interesting to see if Paul gets the kind of strong commercial cross-over success that Rod Stewart enjoyed with his American Songbook releases.

A SECOND rock/pop album is also rumoured to be in the works for late 2012 with Paul currently working on songs. Assuming that his archive project continues with at least one more release (likely to be RAM) and that Paul carries on with his never ending series of mini-tours, next year looks likely to be as busy as ever for the musician who will be celebrating his 70th birthday in June.

So in other words, Sir Paul is now reduced to copying Rod Stewart. Lovely! :barf:

I usually give Harry Nilsson kudos for doing a "standards" album before it was such a popular idea but you guys are right. Ringo was there even before Harry.

a lot of artists have interest in standards. He has the right to do it and he's pushing 70. He would have a serious interest in doing the songs justice, not just pushing crap like Rod Stewart has been uninspiring for decades and sounds awful now.

Paul McCartney will pay homage to some of the songs that inspired his greatest songwriting achievements on a forthcoming, still-untitled album, due out Feb. 7, 2012 on Hear Music/Concord Records.

The follow-up to 2007's "Memory Almost Full" will feature reinterpretations of songs that shaped McCartney's career with the Beatles and as a solo artist, as well as two new tracks, "My Valentine" and "Only Our Hearts." "Valentine" will feature a guest appearance by Eric Clapton, while "Hearts" finds McCartney re-teaming with "Ebony & Ivory" collaborator Stevie Wonder.

McCartney recorded his take on the classic tracks at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, New York and London throughout this year with producers Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall. "When I kind of got into songwriting, I realized how well structured these songs were and I think I took a lot of my lessons from them," says McCartney in a press release. "I always thought artists like Fred Astaire were very cool. Writers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, all of those guys - I just thought the songs were magical. And then, as I got to be a songwriter I thought it's beautiful, the way they made those songs'."

Although a full track list has yet to be announced, McCartney fans can stream "My Valentine" at the singer's official website for 24 hours beginning on Monday (Dec. 19). Earlier this month, "The Love We Make," a documentary chronicling McCartney's plan to play an NYC benefit concert in the wake of 9/11, was released on DVD and Blu-Ray.
