[title]Stuart Davis Something Simple[/title]

Stuart Davis is doing it again. Doing all of it again. Music, books, painting. The Colorado resident has given his music career remarkable vitality by pursuing surprising twists. 2008 marks the release of Stuart's album Something Simple (distributed nationally by Ryko-WEA), and its songs have found myriad spotlights.

The first single from Davis' album “Already Free” is featured prominently in Paramount Picture's film Drill Bit Taylor, starring Owen Wilson. Stuart wrote the song especially for director Steve Brill, who used it to wrap up the movie. In yet another medium, Stuart's new book Sex, God, and Rock 'n Roll comes out in 2008 on Shambhala (distributed by Random House). The book is a memoir of Davis' odyssey through spirituality and music, and includes a CD of songs from Something Simple in the jacket of the book.

Stuart will be performing extensively in 2008, in support of Something Simple. A 30 city tour begins this spring.

[title]Stuart Davis signs with Majeski Media![/title]
May 11, 2007

Hi friends, Stuart here with a double-dose of big news.

First, I'm thrilled to announce I have signed a record deal with Majeski Media out of Chicago, IL. Majeski Media is a new label -one of many amazing ventures created by Eric Majeski, an agent in the Mystery who's bringing his midas touch to the music world. I am the first (and so far only) artist on Majeski Media's roster. It would be hard for me to overstate just how lit up I am with this new home in the music biz! It is a dream come true, plain and simple. Following the momentum, we are moving fast. I'm headed into the studio right away to complete a new studio album by the end of July with producer Alex Gibson. The new album will be released this fall.

Second, that forthcoming album on my new label is already in a major motion picture! I'm double-dizzy with glee to say my new song Already Free (produced by Alex Gibson) is featured in the film Drill Bit Taylor, directed by Steven Brill, starring Owen Wilson. Already Free gets the last five minutes of the film, an incredible placement that has us doing somersaults. Release of the movie looks like sometime late winter or early spring.

I have moved my entire tour schedule in order to finish this new album by summer. I will be doing a CD release tour beginning in late August that will take me all over the U.S. and Europe. I will announce those dates as they come in.

I want to offer a deep thank-you to Majeski Media and Steven Brill for this pairing of incredible news! It promises to be quite a year.

On a personal note, I want to add that I am thrilled to see Stuart finally getting major distribution. His last three albums (Stuart Davis, Bell, and ?What featuring an appearance by Saul Williams) are always in my mix.

Amazon doesn't have the samples up yet on the CD side, but Amazon's mp3 side has some:

Oh I should add that the promo copy of Something Simple has a second CD of excerpts from Stuart's audio book, which is really fascinating. I do not know if this will be included in the retail release but it looks as if it might.

Update: Not sure if this link will last more than a day, but here's the single in low quality mp3:

Review from, um, Duluth Budgeteer. Granted not exactly Paste, but, its a nice one: http://tinyurl.com/ythcb9

“Languages Invented: One” isn’t your typical résumé line entry, but when you find out the résumé you’re reading is that of Stuart Davis, avant-garde pop mastermind, that statistic doesn’t seem too out of the ordinary.

In addition to his own language (“IS,” in case you catch the Google bug later on), Davis subscribes to Ken Wilber’s Integral philosophy, has an affinity for posing nude and, on the much less off-putting side of things, is also an actor, author and avid calligrapher.

No matter what your feelings about Davis’ “extra curricular activities” are, his music, when taken at face value, is pretty amazing.

Like the 10 albums that preceded it, “Something Simple” makes you stop and wonder why there is such an alarming lack of statues baring his likeness: To many, Davis is a golden god, deserving of all the praise in the world — an honor that has, in large part, passed him by.

That said, “Something Simple” only serves to add to the number of Davis converts.

While this latest collection of songs is solid from top to bottom, its immediate standout is the synth-heavy “Deity Freak,” which, like Davis’ 2001 hit “Rock Stars and Models,” is indeed Top 40 material.

The high times continue with “Wand,” worthy of any roadtrip mix tape, which features superb guitar work from Dave Levita. If it sounds like this track is stuck in some sort of mid-’90s timewarp (and I mean this with no ill intent whatsoever), it all starts to make sense when you realize that Levita has done extensive work on Alanis Morissette’s albums.

Another highlight is the smarmy, über-catchy “Sugar Bullets” (“All I ever wanted was just Jesus Christ without the Christians / And all I ever wanted was the peace and love without the pot smoke / And all I ever wanted was the porno flicks without the plot”), a song so smart, like-minded singer/songwriter Mason Jennings is probably kicking himself for not thinking of it first.

As good as these songs are, though, it’s “Already Free” that most folks will hear first. It will soon be making the rounds in more than 3,000 movie theaters nationwide as the closing track to the Owen Wilson vehicle “Drillbit Taylor.”

It’s an odd pairing, but, then again, anything that gets the people listening to Davis’ awe-inspiring tracks is probably a good thing.

Verified with Stu: the first 10,000 copies have the audio book sampler, then it drops down to 1 cd only. If you have any interest at all, get it now, because the audio book sampler is really funny.
