2007 debut album from the UK songstress Kate Nash. Pop music with indie sensibilities and an experimental edge permeate much of this album, and it is topped off with Nash's distinctive estuary vocal stylings. Since the album's release, Nash has been the talk of the town in the UK, where she regularly appears in most of the music magazines from NME to Q. She has quickly risen the ranks from 'darling of the critics' to commercially-successful artist, and deservedly so. Features 12 tracks including the single 'Foundations'. Universal.

1. Play
2. Foundations
3. Mouthwash
4. Dickhead
5. Birds
6. We Get On
7. Mariella
8. Shit Song (Interlude) / Shit Song (Full Of It)
9. Pumpkin Soup
10. Skeleton Song
11. Nicest Thing
12. Merry Happy

"Estuary vocal stylings?" Where do reviewers come up with this stuff?

I do like the song title "Shit Song (Interlude)."

I just played the Foundations video on youtube yesterday. My initial impressions were that she was a little too much like Lily Allen, and a little Lily Allen goes a long way...

Kate Nash planning to release book

Dec 12, 2007

Kate Nash has revealed that she is currently writing a series of short stories, and plans to release a book in the future.

Speaking to NME.COM, Nash explained that she is working on a story for children based around a seven-foot transvestite named Roy, and that author Roald Dahl is an influence on her work.

“I’d like to release a collection of short stories,” she explained. “I’m writing one a bout a 12 year-old boy called George, who meets a seven-foot cross-dresser called Roy. It’s a concept about imagination and being whatever your dream is.

“There’s a lot of things I want to achieve creatively,” Nash went on to say. “I just like chucking things out and thinking, ‘Whatever’. I’m not scared of falling flat on my face.”

Not Too Famous to Mind Her Mum

Kate Nash, who went from unknown two years ago to the top of the British charts. Her first album is being released in the United States this week.

By JON PARELES
Published: January 6, 2008

UNION CHAPEL, in the Islington neighborhood of North London, is a congregational church that doubles as a concert hall. Candles flickered in the balconies, and a round stained-glass window was illuminated over the stage when Kate Nash headlined a benefit concert there on Nov. 26. Seated at a keyboard in a brightly patterned vintage dress, with a drape hiding her legs, Ms. Nash looked over pews full of fans. With a nervous giggle she introduced one of the songs from “Made of Bricks,” a platinum album in Britain that is due for American release this week. “This song is weird for a church, but I’ve been told it’s fine,” she said, adding that her “mum” had also said it was O.K.

Then she proceeded to sing a plaintive, pointed ballad describing someone with a slang term for part of the male anatomy. That mixture of sweetness and blunt candor is the core of Ms. Nash’s charm. “I never do anything just to be crude or in your face,” she said in an interview. “It was just a phrase that I felt was really normal, teenage. But I wasn’t trying to be shocking.”

Ms. Nash, 20, is a nice girl who lives with her parents (in the outer London borough of Harrow) and listens to her mum. “My mum’s got morals and principles, and I’ve been brought up with those ideas and beliefs,” she said. Her mum, she added, “doesn’t like me to swear in the house.”

With 21st-century pop finesse, Ms. Nash managed to start a career by recording songs into her home computer and making some fortunate MySpace links. Less than two years after she quit a job as a fast-food waitress, she was atop the British pop charts. Her New York City show on Wednesday night at the Bowery Ballroom is sold out.

Ms. Nash is part of a steady stream of young English female songwriters who have lately become MySpace and YouTube darlings. Before Ms. Nash were Lily Allen (who endorsed her early) and Amy Winehouse; in her wake is the folky teenage songwriter Adele. All of them attended the BRIT School, the free performing arts school in London supported by the British Record Industry Trust.

Ms. Nash chatted in the warren of dressing rooms backstage at the venerable Royal Albert Hall on a September evening when she was appearing at another benefit concert. The girls of a high-school choir, also on the bill, gawked when they caught sight of her and tittered excitedly after she passed. A few years earlier she might have been one of them herself. “I still feel a bit childish to be here,” she said in her middle-class, Cockney-tinged accent. “Like, my songs are a bit stupid for the Royal Albert Hall.”

Ms. Nash wrote the songs on “Made of Bricks” as a teenager, and in them she captures adolescent ups and downs — peer pressure, awkward courting, lust, body-image qualms, lovers’ quarrels — from the inside. Yet she already has enough adult perspective to see both sides of a spat. Her biggest hit and best song so far, “Foundations,” details the escalation of a couple’s bickering on a bad night out. First the boyfriend humiliates her in public; then the girlfriend sings, “I’ll use that voice that you find annoying” and starts insulting him. As the music swells optimistically, with a string section swirling behind Ms. Nash’s keyboards, the couple get drunker and angrier. “I was a bit scared, but it gives me thrills to wind you up,” she sings. And in the chorus she realizes, “I know that I should let go, but I can’t.” The song is bright, peppy and mercilessly perceptive.

Ms. Nash acknowledged some experience behind her songs. “I’ve had a few, like, rubbish guys,” she said. “For a while they’re fine. And they amuse, and they kind of satisfy. Which is really funny. Like I was kind of up for being treated not that well and being not called and not knowing what’s going on, and is this something or is it not, and being with somebody who isn’t that great anyway. And then it came to the end, and I was like: ‘Wow, I’m done now. I’m done with this.’ ”

While that sounds like what countless young women go through, few have transformed it so neatly into pop.

Kate Nash makes LA debut

Image

Jan 15, 2008

Kate Nash delivered her very first Los Angeles performance last night (January 14) for a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour.

The London songstress was met with thunderous applause when she took the stage to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' which segued into 'Play' from her debut album 'Made Of Bricks'.

Nash kicked off her hour-long set with 'Mariella', and the entire front row mouthed the words to the song despite the fact it was her first show in the city.

"This is my first time in LA and it's pretty good," she told the crowd, who cheered back in response.

"Congratulations on your BRIT Award nomination!" shouted an audience member, referring to the three nods the singer received earlier in the day.

Nash switched between her keyboards and an acoustic guitar throughout the night, and was backed by a three-piece band. Unfortunately incredibly loud drums drowned out the singer's vocals throughout most of the set, which included all of the songs off of 'Made Of Bricks' as well as 'Little Red' during the encore.

Nash concluded the night with an extended version 'Pumpkin Soup', which ended with her pounding the keys of her piano.

Nash played:

'Intro'/'Play'
'Mariella'
'Shit Song'
'Stitching Leggings'
'Skeleton Song'
'Birds'
'Nicest Thing'
'Dickhead'
'We Get On'
'Mouthwash'
'Foundations'
'Merry Happy'
'Little Red'
'Pumpkin Soup'

Kate Nash joined by Billy Bragg onstage

Jan 23, 2008

Billy Bragg joined Kate Nash onstage at her gig in Australia today (January 23).

The singer was playing the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney, and spoke to NME.COM straight after she got offstage.

"Billy Bragg came on stage and we all played 'A New England'," she announced. "We were like hanging out and he was like 'Do you want to get together and do something at the Big Day Out?' and I was like 'Yeah!' - it was amazing."

Nash and Bragg have performed together once before at the Union Chapel in north London.

The singer also hinted that further collaborations could be on the cards, saying: "It would be a privilege to do something on record. It would be amazing. I would be absolutely up for it."

Kate Nash to play secret gig with The Pogues

Feb 13, 2008

Kate Nash is set to play a secret gig in New York with The Pogues sometime in March.

The Daily Mirror reports that the Harrow singer told friends about the gig during a magazine party in London.

Nash is quoted as saying she is “over the moon” about being invited to perform with The Pogues.

Kate Nash played a gig at London's Boogaloo Bar last August, where The Pogues' frontman Shane MacGowan is a regular.

Kate Nash and Billy Bragg collaboration to be released

Mar 28, 2008

Kate Nash has revealed that she plans to record a cover version of The Shangri-Las' 'Give Him A Great Big Kiss' with Billy Bragg.

The London artist explained that the duo plan to head to a studio soon to record the song, then organise a low-key release for the resulting single.

"We'll record the cover in a small studio," Nash told the Daily Star's Playlist. "Just record it quite casually so people can have it. Not a big release or anything - just release it on a white label.

"I don't really want to make a big deal out of it," she continued. "I think that makes it kind of cheesy. At the end of the day it is just two people working together and it would be nice to do something low-key".

The two have been regularly collaborating onstage, most prominently at the Shockwaves NME Awards last month (February 28).
