Bizarre and horrible. :( But hopefully Mick will recover ...

Supergrass star seriously injured in bizarre accident

Aug 31, 2007

Supergrass have cancelled their 'homecoming' gig at Oxford's Carling Academy due to an injury.

Bassist Mick Quinn suffered an accident which left him with a broken back, forcing the cancellation of the gig on September 23.

Quinn sleepwalked out of a first floor window of the villa he was staying at in the South of France.

He was rushed to a specialist spinal unit in Toulouse where surgeons operated to repair two broken vertebrae, and are also treating a smashed heel.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

Frontman Gaz Coombes said: "We hope the crazy fool gets back on his feet as soon as possible. I'm sure he'll make a full recovery; he's a tough cookie."

The Oxford show will be rescheduled, although there is no date set. Ticket holders can apply to the vendor for a refund and will be given first refusal on tickets for the rescheduled show.

Supergrass side-project to gig in London

Image

Nov 1, 2007

Supergrass' Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey are set to play a number of shows as their new duo The Diamond Hoo-Ha Men.

The duo, who have had to delay the release of the new Supergrass album since bassist Mick Quinn broke his back, have decided to gig while Quinn recuperates.

Speaking to NME.COM, drummer Danny Goffey said: "We're just trying to put some energy into something else, but not as Supergrass as a band, we're doing it as a guitar and drums fiasco.

"But it sounds brilliant, man, we've got loads of weird songs we've written for the duo and new songs we're playing. We might do a few old ones too that we've reworked."

While dates are yet to be confirmed, The Diamond Hoo-Ha Men will be playing London clubs around the end of November.

Goffey also explained that Supergrass are to perform without Quinn for a one-off gig, at an XFM fundraising concert.

"We've got Gaz's younger brother, Charly Coombes, playing stand-up keyboard bass with us, which is quite mental."

The drummer claims the duo have some special performance ideas up their sleeves, claiming: "We've got a car called The Diamond Hoo-Ha Van! We've got some mad ideas, but I don't want to tell you 'cause people'll nick them!"

Supergrass' forthcoming completed album, the band's sixth, is set to be released in the spring after Quinn recovers, with Goffey claiming: "It's sounding really good. It's sounding quite raw and rocky, quite upbeat."

Supergrass announce tour under alias

05.Dec.07 3:13pm

Supergrass, under the alias Diamond Hoo Ha Men, have announced details of tour.

They will kick off the tour on Monday (December 10) at an unnamed location in Brighton.

According to http://www.myspace.com/diamondhoohamen they are "Duke Diamond and drummer Randy Hoo Ha" - namely singer Gaz Coombes and drummer Danny Goffey.

The pair are playing as a duo while bassist Mickey Quinn recovers from breaking his back.

Introducing the new band, a statement explained: "(They) started out playing Rammstein covers as part of a local residency. During this time they discovered they had an almost Jagger/Richards-esque knack for songwriting. They soon left Berlin for the bright lights of London where they now live...together.

"Duke & Randy are infamously inseparable and although not officially partners, they share the same bed (Duke always on the right, Randy on the left), eat, drink and bath together. It's true they have a volatile relationship, but there's no doubting this 'Odd Couple' make very special music."

Venues are expected to be announced on Monday (December 10).

They will play in the following cities:

Brighton (December 10)
Leeds (12)
Nottingham (13)
Manchester (14)
London EC2 (15)
London WC2 (late show) (15)
London W1 (17)

Very 70s sounding, which is not a bad thing! :ohyes:

Does "bite me" have a different connotation in the UK than it does in the US?

Sounds more like Gaz is screaming "baby!" in this live version:

You're right though, it sounds like "bite me" or "bait me" on the studio version.

Supergrass DON'T play intimate London show

Dec 18, 2007

The Diamond Hoo Ha Men - quite possibly Supergrass' Danny Goffey and Gaz Coombes in white jumpsuits - played a rare intimate show at Madame Jojo's in central London last night (December 17).

With bassist Mickey Quinn currently recovering from a broken back, Supergrass are currently taking time out from live duties.

However Randy Hoo Ha and Duke Diamond - who bear an uncanny likeness to the Oxford band's drummer and singer - have taken it upon themselves to showcase the band's new tracks from forthcoming album and classics with a series of two-man acoustic shows.

Emerging onstage with an immediate observation of "tough London crowd", the pair opened with a cover of Michael Jackson's 'Beat It', inspiring a loud singalong in the basement club.

"We're going to be playing a selection of new songs and cheeky cover versions," announced Diamond, adding that "we'll get to those later" as the duo introduced '3,4,5' - a track to be given away as a free download on NME.COM later this week.

"We're going to play a few Supergrass covers for you now," announced Diamond, before launching into 'Never Done Nothing Like That Before' and 'Lenny'.

The pair then left the stage, declaring: "We've got no more songs." However, they quickly returned for an encore explaining they "hadn't been going too long" and were "a recent project" hence more Supergrass covers, namely a storming version of 'Caught By The Fuzz', which had the crowd in good voice.

The Diamond Hoo Ha Men, or perhaps members of Supergrass, played:

'Beat It'
'Bad Blood'
'3,4,5'
'Outside'
'Rough Knuckles'
'Never Done Nothing Like That Before'
'Lenny'
'Diamond Hoo Ha Men'
'Caught By The Fuzz'

Supergrass bassist speaks after breaking back

Jan 11, 2008

Supergrass’ Mick Quinn is on the mend after breaking his back last year.

The bassist was injured on a family holiday last August when he walked out of a first floor window where he was staying.

The injury meant Supergrass had to abandon several shows, leading bandmates Gaz Coombes and and Danny Goffey to gig as the duo The Diamond Hoo Haa Men in the interim.

However, speaking to Teletext Quinn explained he is now on the mend, despite the band fearing his accident could have forced them to split.

"I'm going to be back doing shows at the end of February,” he explained. “I'm fine, I just might not be able to jump up and down quite so much in future.

“Danny and Gaz were in total shock (when they heard about the accident). They didn't think I'd be able to walk again."

Quinn explained that he had not been sleepwalking as first thought, but the injuries were the result of a ill-fated, night time toilet dash.

"I needed a pee and, stupidly, I didn't turn any lights on," he explained. "I forgot we were on the first floor, mistook a window for a glass door in the dark and stepped through it!”

Despite being stuck in a French hospital for two weeks and his slow convalescence, the bassist explained there had been some benefits, namely he has given up smoking.

"I was offered nicotine patches, but I was on morphine so I didn't need any," he explained. "I lost weight too. I could write a health guide, but the method is pretty severe.”

He added he was impressed with his bandmates efforts as a duo, but he has been taking notes for the group's return with their new album next month.

"The weirdest thing in all of this has been watching Supergrass shows," Quinn said. "I've been taking notes on what we need to do better - we don't talk to the crowd enough. They could use a bassist, too. But, you know what, we're a good band. I'd pay to go and see our concerts."

This album was listed as one of the "10 Bands That Rock in 08" at allmusic -
http://blog.allmusic.com/2008/1/30/we-s ... ock-in-08/

(in case the link gets messed up that is:
blog.allmusic.com/2008/1/30/we-salute-you-10-bands-that-rock-in-08/
)

Supergrass is the only band on the list that I know - I'm not much into Heavy other than the usual suspects (frankly some of the others 'scare me')... but I thought it was an interesting inclusion (either a radical change of form, or the rest of the list is not as *scary* as I thought).

I was listening to "Supergrass is 10" yesterday at the gym. What an awesome comp! Two things:
1. I realized this comp is quite possibly in my top 5 favorite comps of all time (without a doubt top 7)
2. Due to their pumping encouragement, I was able to do 11.27 miles on the elliptical machine in 35 minutes - including cooldown (Take that Comcast!)

Where'd I slip my tongue..?

And the band have posted a message at their MySpace page about the forthcoming CD single:

Supergrass need only to sell 422 million copies of the single for the royalties from their use of Beat It to cover Michael's bill and save Neverland! Not to mention, it will make Bad Blood the biggest selling single of all time! So do your bit and pre order the single today! You really should hurry because the single is out March 17 and Neverland goes under the auctioneer's hammer on March 19.

The US release is due out June 10, but I scored a promo today at 'Rama. No bonus DVD. In fact, the link above says the special edition is "currently unavailable." Was there indeed an import with a bonus DVD?
