Description
Nine Lives expands upon all of the many phases and turns of Steve Windwood's lustrous career. The new songs range from the inspiring "Fly," to the burning "Dirty City" (featuring a guest appearance by long-time friend Eric Clapton, hot on the heels of their acclaimed Madison Square Garden concerts together), to the shimmering "Hungry Man." The album really brings the many facets of Winwood's musical vision together as never before. His pioneering explorations of rock, R&B, African, Latin and jazz styles blend into unique concoctions with the musician's great gifts on guitar, keyboard, the Hammond B3 organ (on which he provides all of the album's bass parts) and a voice instantly recognizable for its power and emotion. Created through a vital new writing partnership with lyricist Peter Godwin, appearances by guitarist Jose Neto, and the great playing of his road-tested band, the album builds on some of the greatest music of his impressive past.

more news on the upcoming album:

Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton are featured in the cover story of 20th Century Guitar's February 2008 issue.

The article consists of 2 separate interviews. One of the things Steve Winwood talks about is his new album "NIne Lives". Eric Clapton is playing guitar on one track of the album, on a song called "Dirty City". About working together with Eric after the MSG shows he says: "I'm certainly open to doing anything else after that".

The new Winwood has been pushed back again until Apr. 29. From Billboard.com:

With his highly anticipated gigs with ex-bandmate Eric Clapton looming this week in New York, Steve Winwood has signed a new deal with Columbia Records. His label debut, "Nine Lives," will arrive April 29.

Clapton, who played briefly with Winwood in Blind Faith in the late 1960s, contributes guitar on first single "Dirty City," which hits U.S. radio outlets today (Feb. 25). Fans can stream the track from Winwood's Web site or buy it from iTunes.

The nine-track set is Winwood's first studio album since 2003's "About Time," which he release on his own Wincraft label.

Winwood and Clapton reunited last July at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago, leading to the three-show Garden run tonight, tomorrow and Thursday. The duo will be backed by bassist Willie Weeks, drummer Ian Thomas and keyboardist Chris Stainton.

This summer, Winwood will be back on the road in the U.S. as the support act for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Here is the track list for "Nine Lives":

"I'm Not Drowning"
"Fly"
"Raging Sea"
"Dirty City"
"We're All Looking"
"Hungry Man"
"Secrets"
"At Times We Do Forget"
"Other Shore"

Aerosmith and REO Speedwagon have already used this album title. Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things, but I thought it should be noted.

Anyone else think he sounds EXACTLY like Clapton on "At Times We Do Forget?" It's eerie to me how much the song (especially the chorus) and his voice sound like August era Clapton. If it came out that Clapton actually ghost wrote this song I would not be surprised at all...

I wasn't sure how interested I was in Nine Lives, but a friend loaned it to me, and I was surprised how good it was. I'll be picking this up.
