Tokyo Police Club preview new material in LA

Mar 27, 2008

Tokyo Police Club previewed new material from their forthcoming album at the first of two sold-out shows at the Troubadour in Los Angeles last night (March 26).

The Canadian quartet played a rousing set for a packed house, running through tracks from their 2006 EP 'A Lesson In Crime' as well as last year's 'Smith' and the forthcoming full-length 'Elephant Shell', which is due out next month.

"When we found out we were gonna play two nights in LA we were so excited because it meant that we'd spend not one, but two nights on our friend Paul's air mattress," singer/bassist Dave Monks told the crowd.

The audience responded well to the new material, but it was the older favourites including 'Citizens Of Tomorrow' and 'Be Good' that got the crowd clapping and singing along.

"This is a song that was half-baked the last time we were in LA and now it's come to fruition," Monks said before launching into the strong new track 'The Baskervilles'.

The foursome concluded the night with a short encore of the crowd-pleaser 'Cheer It On'.

"I think it went well--some people were dancing to the new songs," drummer Greg Aslop told NME.COM after their set. "We're glad that we're ready to have people hear our new songs."

Tokyo Police Club played:

'La Ferrassie'
'In A Cave'
'Box'
'Sixties Remake'
'If It Works'
'Graves'
'Juno'
'Your English Is Good'
'Cut Cut Paste'
'Nursery, Academy'
'Citizens Of Tomorrow'
'Tessellate'
'Shoulders & Arms'
'The Baskervilles'
'Nature Of The Experiment'
'Famous'
'Be Good'
'Cheer It On'

The band are set to play their second sold-out show at The Troubadour in Los Angeles tonight (March 27).

Their 2006 EP, "A Lesson In Crime", elicited raves from Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Interview, Blender, and Nylon, among others. Since then, TPC have been touring virtually nonstop, pausing only to release last year's "Smith" EP and the digital-only single, "Your English Is Good." Now Ontario's favorite sons offer their first full-length.

It's nigh on impossible to review a young, indie rock band anymore without referencing their predecessors, their colleagues who have created the anxiety of influence. Here, David Monks' voice, combined with Joshua Hook's compressed-spray on guitar, certainly conjure early Strokes, but then comparisons just fall short. Tokyo Police Club's command of multiple tempos and rhythmic palettes sets up spacey atmospheres to tumble through, with a hefty blast at their beck and call. There's a languid undertow here, Monks pulling you in with a slow, warm-water voice only to let his pals bludgeon you with just-so rhythms that, even in flight, last a sharp, fast two minutes on average.

3. Citizens Of Tomorrow 2:44
4. Shoulders & Arms 2:38
