[bigred]Standard Edition (CD Only)[/bigred] Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic–born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Now that's the kind of magic you want from musicals.1. Falling Slowly 2. If You Want Me 3. Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy 4. When Your Minds Made Up 5. Lies 6. Gold 7. The Hill 8. Rented the movie on DVD a week and a half ago. Loved it. It's a good, simple, sweet story, well told. The music is pretty terrific. I got the collector's edition the other day (bought the DVD of the movie, too), and it's great. Also bought the CD that the two principals, Glen Hanspard and Marketa Irglova, released a while back. It's very good, too, although it does contain some of the same songs. They're both very talented. Hanspard is the leader of the Irish band the Frames. Very impressive songwriter. She's very young, but obviously talented.
I think the collector's edition is worth it for the two extra tracks and the extras, but see the movie first. (The collector's edition does NOT contain the entire movie on DVD, in case you're wondering.)
I'm not foolish enough to think that everybody will like this movie, but I would say that anybody who likes singer/songwriter/folk/rock and good independent films should see this.
Oh, and I LOVE the guitar.

Would this appeal to someone who liked The Committments?

Linda, in a word-yes. Once is a very nice movie and the music is quite good. My wife adores this film and she has since become a Frames fanatic. Very good, passionate Irish rock. Not as good asmy beloved Thin Lizzy, but it's really good stuff. Are there any Frames fans out there? My wife has almost everything but is still looking for one or two things. Glen Hasnard is a real talent and his stuff on this soundtrack and with The Frames is quite impressive. My wife would tell you to enjoy it Linda, so go for it!

I'm going to disagree with Invisible somewhat. I don't see a lot of similarities between this and The Commitments. The latter was about soul band; this mostly is thoughtful acoustic rock. The films are quite different in style, too. Anybody could like both, but I wouldn't recommend this because somebody liked The Commitments.

I agree-this doesn't remind me at all of The Commitments which I didn't really like. I was only recommending this because it's so good. I may not have been clear about that-I was just saying how good Once and The Frames are-I also agree because you liked The Commitments wouldn't mean you'd also like Once. I think when I said "Linda, in a word, yes" you thought I meant, yes, someone would enjoy both, when I actually meant yes-Once is great! So, we're defintely on the same page.
